Book hunting for First Edition Hardbacks! Pet Sematary First Edition and how to recognize one!

Today I did something a little different. We went book hunting! I primarily look for Stephen King, Clive Barker, Brandon Sanderson books in this video! We also go into great detail on how to recognize a Pet Sematary first edition book. With the movie coming out this weekend and the demand for the book hitting record levels, I thought it would be nice to go into some finer details!

I just found a mint condition first edition/first pressing of Pet Sematary that looks like it was made yesterday. It cost me $120 but it was a good investment as its my favorite story of all time and this thing is in perfect shape.

I'm fine with bookclub editions or later printings so long as they are the regular size. What's annoying about King's books prior to the mid 80s or so is that it's difficult to tell if you're buying the full size hardback or the smaller one if you're buying them online. I could be wrong about this, but I think his books from the 70s were the smaller size in the first editions. I read somewhere that the absurdly expensive first edition The Shining is actually 8.5 inches in height rather than the normal 9.6, or whatever it is. There's a 8.5 inch version which has the wraparound graphics on the cover, and a 9.6 inch one that has a blank spine, I think, so in that case, if you care about the size, you actually want one of the later printings or versions, but it's difficult to tell which one. I just want them all the same size so they look cool on a shelf lol. You wouldn't think this would be as difficult as it is.

Hey man :) I've just found this video of yours and subbed. Very interesting. The reason I'm here is today I popped into a charity shop here in Scarborough, England, as I usually do looking for books. I'm looking to complete my King collection ( love Barker too, I've grown up with them both me being 45 ) and I ask an assistant there if they had any King books not yet put out for sale. He said he was sure they did, but they were hardback and people only tended to buy PB. I said please let me see them. :) He pops back down the stairs with three King books all in very good condition. Dreamcatcher, wizard and glass and Wolves of Calla. I didn't have these at home so I bought them instantly for £1.99 each!!! Crazy low price I gave them a few quid more as I felt bad. Anyway...lol...I get home and look at them only to find the wolves of calla one initially sold for £25!! On the next page in pencil was written £10 first edition!!???!!!? I've never found a first edition before and having looked online they're going for between £25 to £80 pity it isn't signed!!! But that's greedy! Cheers mate I'm made up :)

I just want to read/have his complete collection of books but now I may start looking for first editions. Can't be cheap though!!! I'll bet they go for a hell of allot of money. Peace :)

I got so excited just coz I found a US first edition of rose madder in a used bookshop the other day because they are harder to come by in Australia. I can’t believe how good this used bookstores are where you live, I would buy everything on the shelves 😂

They tend to have a lot of the newer books, but they do start charging more money for the rare ones… particularly Half Priced Books..

I have quite a few Stephen King books, but I really want to get US first editions and it is SO much harder and a lot of money to ship to Australia. Obviously, US first editions are more popular in the US... but I never actually realised how big some of the selections can be in second hand stores over there. I am dyingggggg!

So there’s a difference in first edition and first printing? There can be second printings that are first editions?

Yes. THere can be multiple printing sessions in a first edition run, those printing sessions are pre determined and usually denoted in the beginning of the book. After those predetermined runs are completely, you move into second, third, 4th, etc editions of a book. The publisher will also usually change the cover art with editions.

Hi, my copy of Pet Sematary has the $15.95 price and the 1982 Caretakers on the dust jacket, but the code on the last page starts with Y4. I can't see the rest of it but I guess it's Y40 something. Does that mean it's a first edition but later printing? Thanks!

Hello! Thank you for watching! I apologize for such a late response, you most likely have already found your answer by now. You can find out tons on the printing information of your Stephen King books on "stephenkingcollector.com". Generally speaking though, yes if the code does not match the First Printing code, it is a later printing, I don't know the specifics on the code meanings, I do know the letter is the year or month, and the numbers typically denote the week of printing in that year. I am sure there is a better break down out there, I do apologize!
