I got to see it on broadway and then when it toured Australia I obviously watched it again. Still a great watch! There’s actually a filmed version of the original broadway cast that was one of their dress rehearsals that I’ve seen floating around KZbin if you want to try and track it down

I caught this show in a relatively conservative area, and while the first couple songs are fairly tame, man, you know EXACTLY when a whole bunch of people started shifting in their seats and some got up to go. The rest of us had a ball.

Matt and Trey wrote this with Bobby Lopez, who went on to write all the songs from Disney’s Frozen. In “I Believe”, all the funny stuff he says (God changed his mind about black people, Jesus having his own planet) are actually in The Book of Mormon

Most of the weirdo stuff is in their other scripture not the Book of Mormon. Their D&C is wild.

This won’t show up on any official performance or the official album, but in the play, after the song “I Believe” where Elder Price tries to convert the warlord, the warlord shoves the Book of Mormon somewhere Elder Price didn’t want it shoved.

In terms of the beginning production, Book of Mormon won Best Musical for 2011 so they invited those in what was the currently running version of the show to do the opening of the 2012 with their opening number as well as to introduce NPH AKA the host of the 2012 Tonys. Speaking of which, if you haven't already, Neil Patrick Harris did his own original Tony Openers for 2011 ("It's Not Just For Gays Anymore"), 2012 ("What if Life Were More Like Theater?"), and 2013 ("Bigger") which are all worth reacting to.

I grew up Mormon I’m ex Mormon and only the male missionaries are called elders. They have sister missionaries who are called sisters. In the Mormon church in church buildings where they hold Sunday service you are referred to as brother if you’re a male and sister if you’re a woman, so I was always called sister [insert last name]

H'okay, basic TBOM info dump time! This musical opened on Broadway (in New York) in 2011 and won 9 Tonys (Broadway's Oscars) that year. In 2013, it opened in London's West End (England) and won 4 Olivier Awards (West End's Tonys). Both productions are still running now, in 2024. There's been several US and international tours, plus a few productions (staying in one theatre for months or years, not moving around) around the world. If you can make it to a theatre to watch it, PLEASE DO! These songs will make way more sense in context and then you'll know the story too, plus the rest of the songs. 'I Believe' was performed at the 2011 Tonys because they were nominated for 'Best Musical' which they won. The first song, 'Hello' was from the 2012 Tonys because traditionally the previous year's winner performs again the next year. That's why those are the only two filmed songs and they actually look professionally filmed. There's a real taboo around filming people onstage, just like filming in a movie theatre so technically there's full TBOM bootlegs on KZbin (filmed from the audience) if you know where to look, sshhhhhh. I'm not going to get into the weirdness of the Mormon religion and their beliefs (basically all of 'I Believe' and much more) for many reasons, it's NOT my place and neither is KZbin comments. There's a lot to unpack and examine there.

I finally saw Book of Mormon when it came on tour, and OMG. It was f**king hilarious! Of course, it being written by the guys from South Park, it's full of OMFG moments, some of which you just have to see to believe. It pokes fun at some of the basic tenants of the Mormon religion, which I'm sure has been featured on South Park itself once or twice, but man.... I could hardly believe some of the things that they did on that stage. And the best part was... the Mormon Church, of course, despises this show to an extreme. But when it came here on tour, the Mormon Church themselves were outside the theatre trying to talk to people and share the actual Book of Mormon with people. I almost grabbed a copy myself! Hahaha! So, in a way, really, although the show bashes the Mormon Church left and right, it allows the Mormon Church to plead its case outside to the people. You should DEFINITELY go to New York and see it the next time you're there! You won't regret it.
