i loved this book sm, it automatically became one of my faves 🥺 one of my favorite aspects of it were the emails (aka love letters). i’m such a softie that i literally started tearing up while reading the emails they sent to each other. historical queer figures?? YES. and i agree with you when saying that this book is GENUINELY funny, this is one of few books that have actually managed to make me laugh out loud.

Just finished it. It reminds me so much of Carry on but somehow it still is it’s completely own book. Rainbow Rowell and Carry on are my favorite author and favorite book but I think this might now be up there as my second favorite. Or even an equal to Carry on. I’m so sad I can’t read it again for the first time.

SAME. I mean, talking bout RWRB. I just finished the book and I'm feeling so sad, like I will read it 100x and still I would not feel the same amazing feelings than the first time. I'll be damned but I miss it.

I think the author got the idea from bbc merlin - Blond welsh arrogant prince with a badass sister ✅ - dark haired really fucking funny guy✅ - both incredibly hilarious and VERY MUCH unaware of their feelings towards each other ✅. - both helplessly and incredibly and impossibly in love with each other ✅✅✅✅✅✅✅✅✅✅✅.

Actually, she was inspired by an aspiring author online. The two main characters have the same names as her main characters, who were also together, and their backstory was quite similar, too. Also, Henry struck me as very serious and awkward, not funny.

I started reading this after seeing it being compared to Young Royals (which, if you haven’t seen and you like RWRB, you NEED to watch!) and I was in a slump after rewatching YR over and over. I think this is a much funnier and optimistic and less dramatic/sad version of Young Royals, but it also surprised me by being such a well-written and interesting story of its own merit. I read it furiously over a few days and immediately after I was finished, went back and started rereading it again, which I NEVER do. I can’t believe it’s a debut novel. As of me typing this, the movie has wrapped filming and I’m very impatiently awaiting its release!

I’m glad I’m not the only one that felt major similarities to Young Royals when I read RWRB! But like you said, they are different and have their own merit. I’ve fallen in love with both, both are amazing imho.
@monicastamant
@monicastamant Жыл бұрын
@@Angelareadsalot Yeah for sure! They are similar enough that if you like one, you’ll probably like the other, but different enough to be super interesting. It was cool that in RWRB both of them are in positions of fame/power while Simon in YR is a “commoner”.
@Angelareadsalot
@Angelareadsalot Жыл бұрын
True! And also, it was interesting to see the perspective of a 23-yr-old vs 16-yr-old prince. SPOILERS I do love that Alex and Simon are both super sassy and honest, and neither one could care less that they are dating a prince, haha. And that’s a big reason why their prince is in love with them :)

Here's my synopsis: A political movement is stirring in UK that seeks to oust the royal family for good. Either they see having a gay prince as disgraceful on international stage (if they are ultra conservative) or they see royalties as symbol of old traditions and are outdated for the modern world (if they are ultra liberal). Alex, asked his mom to help the royal family for his boyfriend Henry. His mom helped in secret but it was discovered and exposed by the largest international media conglomerade. The media scandal was seen in both countries as foreign intervention and a political crisis, hence people started to hate them. Now Henry and Alex not only need to prove to each other that they can stay strong together through all these trials, but they also needs to prove to the world that royals can preserve certain important traditions while being progressive at the same time. To add a more personal conflict; Andrew (my original character) a son of the president-CEO of the said media giant, will try to break them up and steal either Henry or Alex.

I really disliked how it was from Alex’s perspective but also in 3rd person for some reason. It just seems to overlap weirdly, and pulled me out of it as some points. The narrator seems to be omniscient but also can’t see other perspectives, until I started thinking of it as Alex narrating his own life through a biographical lense because of his self-centred nature. I don’t have a favourite line but one of my favourite parts of the book is the turkey scene lmao

I’m only 6 hrs into the audio book and yeah... I’m not impressed. As gay minority I can tell you first hand that this is not how the gay scene works, especially for men of color. It’s grim all around; politically and romantically. For me personally this novel reads like some wish fulfillment fan fiction. Which is fine, except that the synopsis makes you think you’ll be getting some Megan Markel and Prince Henry type drama along with their love-hate relationship. Like you have a biracial, bisexual First Son hooking up with a very traditional Prince of England... that’s a recipe for a good drama, not a whimsical rom-com. Thus far this novel definitely could have went another round of editing and a more clear direction. Like the idea of the story is good however for me personally I think I would like the story better if there was more realism and drama and some serious consequences involved. But Idk maybe the last 6hrs will change my mind.

I couldn’t get int Red white/blue at all. The characters didn’t talk like human beings, they spoke like a teen girls construct of what they think teen gay boys should talk like. The characters are young men yet they talk and act as if they’re bitchy sarcastic high school queens. It was so off putting for me personally.
