red white and royal blue has a lot of easter eggs and to me is a lot deeper than expected (maybe because i've read the book about 983394 times and watch the movie the same amount of times) so here's a tiny compilation of some important - to me personally - things i noticed during my many watches.

When the king summons them both, Henry tries fidgeting with his ring again only to find it's not there, but on Alex's finger. In the end credit clips, they both sit on the couch and Alex lets Henry play with the ring he now wears.

Just a UK addition to detail: wearing a signet ring on the little finger (never called a pinky in the UK, please!) in this way is an aristocratic family tradition, the ring usually bearing a family insignia or the individual's initials. Can often be passed down through generations. The ring also gives an acceptable formal physical stance as well as a 'worry bead.' (Watch Charles do this as a very strong real life physical tell.) When Henry gives Alex his ting on the runway, it is not only a sign of love and loyalty and commitment , it is also an indication that he loosening the hold of the family and it's position and formality within his psyche. I also think the fact Alex wears the ring on his own hand is much better than hiding it away on a chain around his neck as in the book.

You also see it a little bit in the movie proper when the King's servant comes into tell him about the crowd outside. It's much briefer than during the credit sequence so I guess they edited the first part of it and reinserted it into the credits.

The key is also that one thing that dangles from Alex's chest pointing towards Henry during their intimacy scene in Paris, referring to Alex's line of a rope attached to his chest always pulling him towards Henry. Henry becomes the home that Alex needs to return to, and Alex becomes the key that Henry finally owns.

Another hidden thread in this complex story comes to the surface briefly in the Paris café, when Henry thinks Alex might want to know "how many other famous boys have I shagged?". The question is never answered, but Macquiston tells us that Henry was educated at Eton. At that school, there will have been plenty of "famous boys" to choose from. Much later in the film, Henry tells his sister: "I ended things with Alex." Bea: "Oh, Hen. I'm so sorry. Did grandpa find out?" Henry: "Not this time." In other words, the King knows all about the "very bad things" that happened at Eton, which explains the pep talk he gives Henry on his 18th birthday.

I thought the same thing, it was evident that the king had already known what was happening at Eton and would have acted to keep them away from Henry. As Henry realized how much Alex loved him, he chose to walk away and break his own heart rather than Alex's. This is what he answers to B when she asks him if he loves Alex and he answers "What difference does it make if I did?" What he never imagined was that Alex was going to go to London to fight for his love

Henry's hand-on-heart is also a reference both to his affectionate title "Prince of England's Heart" and to Henry's own writing in an email to Alex (from the novel), where he allegorizes a prince born with a heart outside of his body.

Another reference to the "heart" theme: The movie, as well as the book, ends with Alex and Henry coming back to Alex's childhood home, in Austin... "Deep in the heart of Texas" (you'd be singing in your head if you're from there or have lived there for a while)

After they hid in the janitor's closet, another video joked about "Henry remembering that Alex is American." But when you think about it, there may be some truth to that. Alex is young enough to constantly have shooter drills in school. He's from a state that is known to praise gun ownership. He may have been what two or three (if he was even born yet) when Columbine happened, he certainly is old enough to remember Sandy Hook and while this is set two years before Uvalde would have taken place in his home state of Texas, who knows what mass shootings may have occurred in their universe. Plus, the awareness of the First Family's lives constantly being in jeopardy as public figures is always there. Plus, if it's anything like in reality I'm sure the First Female President with a Latino husband and biracial son have probably received numerous death threats from alt-right hate groups (not to mention that those threats may increase now that the First Son and Prince of England have come out).

The ring does not represent duty to Henry. It belonged to his late father, who was the one grounding the family. Henry was devastated when his father died. Touchinig the ring gives him the feeling of security that he lost after his father's death. Giving the ring to Alex means that he is the one grounding Henry now, his comfort zone, his safe place. Alex reciprocates by giving Henry the key to his home, which basically means the same to him.

Another three things to add to your list of Easter eggs and observations: 1. And relative to your windows and silence comment: when Alex is drinking alone at the start of the film, as a wallflower with a whisky at the wedding reception, we see Henry reflected in the mirror behind Alex, so we know exactly who and what he is looking at, even then. Henry behind glass as that first motif. 2. In the book, Henry judges his stress levels by the number of Jaffa cakes he eats. After turkeygate, when the boys are together on Alex's bed, but in reality texting, you see Henry with a packet of jaffa cakes by his left hip, which he then quietly moves onto the nightstand as he and Alex talk. He does not need his comfort food any longer, because he is talking to Alex instead. 3. In the lavender garden after Henry runs away from Texas, Bea and Henry are discussing Henry breaking up with Alex. She makes a quip to cheer him about Philip and standing at the top of the stairs. This is in reference to the mystery that still exists, 500 years on, about the death of Amy Robsart. Amy was the wife of Robert Dudley, Earl of Leicester, who was the favourite of Queen Elizabeth1. It was rumoured Elizabeth and Robert were lovers, but all that stood in their way to marriage was Robert's wife, Amy. Amy died, aged only 28, by falling down a flight of stairs at her home, in 1560. Did she fall - or was she pushed? No-one saw the fall. She died of a broken neck and two head wounds. An inquest declared her death to be 'misfortune' - i.e. accidental death. But was it? Robert was certain Elizabeth would marry him afterwards ....but she didn't; the Virgin Queen did not marry anyone. Questions about Amy's death have raged ever since. (And as an interesting sideswipe and serendipity, Nicholas Galitzine will portray George Villiers, Duke of Buckingham, in the forthcoming period TV drama series Mary and George, with Julianne Moore as his mother, Mary. George came to power and influence by becoming the lover of King James V1 (of Scotland) and 1 (of England). James, the son of Mary Queen of Scots (her cousin, who Elizabeth finally had beheaded at Fotherinhay,) succeeded Elizabeth as the new King: she had nominated him herself over other claimants. It was rumoured George eventually poisoned James, and then became the lover of his son, Charles 1. George was stabbed to death, in public, at the age of 35 after bringing his family from poverty to become the most influential in the country. This relationship is actually cited in Red White And Royal Blue, in conversation between the boys in the museum (PP288/9 in my p/b copy) Can't wait to see it! For all is true. (Strongly cast - the actor playing James played Van Gogh in a standout episode of Dr Who in the Matt Smith era - sumptuously filmed, and based on a much lauded biography, The King's Assassin,) And will prove what an actor of exceptional range Nicholas Galitzine is

The director, Matthew Lopez, described the book as a Trojan Horse in an interview because (paraphrasing) you think it's just going to be a fun, silly enemies-to-lovers story but then part way through it becomes something much deeper. The same definitely applies to the movie. If you haven't read the book first (like I hadn't), you go in expecting it to be a light, goofy romcom but then suddenly it turns around and hits you right in The Feels and completely blows you away with its depth.

I really appreciated your analysis. I have seen the movie several times, but had not picked up on some of the “Easter eggs”, a term I was unfamiliar with prior to this movie. Another YT commented something about a Taylor Swift dress in the ballroom scene and also that the author was in the movie as well. I tried googling the term, but nothing came up. I think that the “making love” scene is just that, such tenderness and warmth between the two characters and yes they could have had Lana del Rey in the background.

Something else I noticed. Throughout the movie, Alex is always teasing Henry about his refinement and his and the British eloquent way of speaking ("Oh we don't want to screw up the Shed-juel") But when they reunite in Kensington after Alex is about to tell Henry that he loves him, Alex says "Then I will walk out that door and trouble you no longer" which sounds more like something Henry would say. Alex being American would more than likely normally say something informal like "I will walk out that door and never come back" or "I will walk out that door and you'll be rid of me forever." It shows a subtle hint that Alex inadvertently adopted some of Henry's speech patterns. As Henry is learning from Alex to loosen up and express himself, Alex is learning from Henry to be more restrained, eloquent, and refined. (Which helps come into play for him when he gives his speech like a consummate orator and politician.) Remember one of Alex's biggest anxieties and insecurities is his constant need to prove himself that he belongs in places where the wealthy are and is afraid of being looked down upon. This change of speech shows that he has learned to adjust and can elevate himself to the level of those that he thought would dislike him and still retain his easy going, rough around the edges, sarcastic self.

"Trouble you no longer" is a very interesting choice of words. To make the line more American, like 'walk out and never come back,' is far too emphatic, too final. That slams the door on Henry finding his courage and resolve and reaching back to reconnect. Which is what Alex would want. Not to categorically slam the door in both their faces. Henry would, and does, appreciate the nicety of Alex's choice of words, and how these throw the ball back into Henry's court. Words of reason ad love, not anger and hurt. Delicious stuff.

So many of the media critics who have been sniffy, criticised and patronised the film and book in their reviews, have failed to get what this book to film is actually about and what it really is; not an airy ordinary little rom-com with the hook of socially prominent sexy young males as protagonists, but a beacon of hope for now and the future, a fairy tale cum morality tale of love and goodness conquering all and being supported, always or finally, to show that whatever a person's roots and upbringing, love and understanding and empathy can conquer all to make great strides of advancement in the world. of love and individuality, kindness and tolerance, acceptance and possibility of change. This film, because of being so lovingly and carefully created and crafted from it's source material, both of which speak for a whole world and it's zeitgeist, goes deeper and further in reaction from audiences than I think could ever have been expected. Such outpourings of love and understanding, such wide connection around the world, is surely unparalleled. Because when you see other worldwide media phenomenon, like Star Wars or Game of Thrones of video games moving to money making franchises, only this film is the one not grounded in violence or control or supremacy and conflict as the only solutions. That is what is extraordinary about Red White And Royal Blue. It is a gentle hand of heart within a velvet glove, and it reveals just how much love and hope are wanted in this current nasty old world. And what a gentler and more understanding approach can do. Neither book nor film are without flaws; that's called real life. But the job they are doing is extraordinary. So heartfelt thanks to Casey, Matthew, Nicholas, Taylor and all who contributed to this shaft of sunlight in the darkness. And to you, Kanej Breakdown, for crafting such a deep and thoughtful analysis, and proving this film is far more, created with more depth, than the rom-com fluff is could be dismissed as by those people who do not think before they judge. didn’t think i’d be crying over a comment today but here we are. this was unbelievably thoughtful. to me the book went deeper than a light romcom of two people falling in love bc i related to alex’s anxiety and struggle in figuring his orientation out + henry’s need to stay closeted etc. and his anxiety too. by extension i loved the movie for the same reason (even though it didn’t have as much time to cover the above-mentioned things). it was a really, genuinely heartwarming movie when i feel like we don’t get that many good ones anymore but it wasn’t without substance and depth. people, critics especially, tend to dismiss romcoms in general and don’t even bother looking deeper which is a shame because i could write an entire dissertation on the part of them being outed alone.

It is wonderful and very thoughtful. The only inaccuracy is Alex's family and friends were in Austin TX waiting for the election results, not in the White House. After the win was announced, Alex and Henry biked to Alex's house where he grew up.

in the Italian version it is specified that Alex and Henry arrive at 2.38 AM in Austin....if they then return to the White House it is not clear why Henry asks him: "and now?" in a half hug and Alex asks him: 'Do you still have the key??' smiling and then we see them in their bibs laughing (Henry has the ring and Alex removes the chain with the key from his neck and opens the door letting Henry in after both saying victory

They are. The President and their family vote in their home state because they are still considered residents of that state. In fact, there has yet to be one who is an actual citizen from the District of Columbia. Strangely enough, Nora is with them which implies both Ellen and the VP are from Austin which usually the President and Vice President are supposed to be from different states. I guess they wanted to put Nora in that scene. There apparently is no requirement that the running mates have to be from different states. The closest one is that the 12th Amendment only says that Electors from the Electoral College have to be from different states. Usually, the Presidential candidate selects a running mate from another state so they can get a fresh perspective and look like they support the whole country rather than one specific area of it.

Have to add the point that Nicholas Galitzine is indeed playing the piano himself. In some of his music videos he is also playing the piano instead of his trusty guitar. Audiences so often either take it for granted that actors can play musical instruments, as if by magic or assume it is miming to dubbed in music. A friend of mine once played Mozart in Amadeus. He is a gifted pianist, but audiences thought he was miming....so the scenes had to be reblocked to turn the piano and show clearly that he was indeed playing Mozart's music himself.

It is very rare that an actor is actually playing the piano or organ. Nick does so to perfection. Interestingly, Alan Alda was seen playing the piano in "Same Time Next Year". I'm unaware of Phyllis Diller playing the piano in any of her routines, but she did play with a number of Philharmonic Orchestra.

When Alex explains about the key around his neck, Henry recoils a little and becomes deep in thought. He understands what the key means to Alex, about home and love and permanence. Which prompts him to say he has never had a key of his own, that he has never had that support and stability and warmth. Code that Alex will finally understand about the difficulties and cloistered coldness of Henry's position.

Reg. your second point: I think the the stepping out on the palace balcony is connected to this imagery. Henry goes through the glass doors = he leaves the glass cage that kept him from the real world. First we see his reflection, then he takes agency over his actions which has been denied to him beforehand.

Something to point out is that in the scene when Alex and Henry are summoned by the king there's a breif momeny when the camera is turned on them that you can see Henry playing with Alex's fingers, or vice versa. This reminds me of how he went to fidget with his ring before the meeting only to notice it was on Alex's finger. I think that Alex noticed Henry was getting anxious and gave him something to distract him.

Males do not go to finishing schools, if finishing schools even exist any longer. They were for girls. Henry went to public school (which are private boarding schools, usually single sex.) He tells Alex in the Paris scene that he went to an English public school, which is a line that most foreign audiences would not understand, the implication being that he will have had same sex experiences at school, as the only outlet for sexual awakening within and beyond puberty as the boys live. sleep and are taught on the same premises; this situation and expectancy is still considered very much a given for boys at boarding school. Private boarding schools (ie, paid for, and often also only allowed entry by examination) are called public schools because when they were established, and some as long as a thousand years ago, entry was available to all children, ie the public, rather than just the children of priests and the aristocracy, as most schools until that time were run by churches, cathedrals and other religious establishments iwth the aim of furthering the faith and teaching/creating more priests. I also love the little scenes of Henry and Alex's father together. They seem to have bonded instantly and with humour; so perhaps Henry has found himself a substitute father as well as the love of his life. How timely, how appropriate.@@julieporter7805

I adore this film, but you have put your finger on its greatest logical flaw. Why is the King absent from the wedding ceremony, why does he not appear with the newly-weds and other family mambers on the balcony at Buckimgham Palace? Where, for that matter, is Henry's mother? Their absence is inexplicable and, by royal standards, unpardonable. One could argue that the King is seriously ill, indeed Henry's instinctive reaction when Bea comes to tell him about the e-mail hack ("What's going on? Is it Grandpa?") seems to support the idea. But when the King finally appears, he lights a cigarette and pours himself a glass of whisky. Scarcely the behaviour of a man under doctors' orders. Maybe they should have put him in a wheelchair. As it stands, this is a major gaffe on the part of the script writers.

Without being an apologist for director and co screenwriter Matthew Lopez - a lauded and much admired creative who does not need it - but offering an objective professional eye, I will try and answer this matter of royal absences and protocol: The first thing to remember is that this film is a summer rom-com, not War and Peace. As with any book to film, plot and content had to be seriously filleted to concentrate on the main story, that of Henry and Alex. (Think how hard pruned LA Confidential was, as a random example) The royal wedding is merely a plot device to get the boys together and create the major cakegate incident to kickstart the love story. So we only see what would be described in the press as 'edited highlights.' Just because you do not see the King and the Duchess does not mean they were not in attendance - just not shown. Watch any Royal Wedding coverage, and the bride and groom are always given their star moment alone on the balcony with the family appearing alongside, gradually joining them, so we only see Philip and Martha, joined first by Philip's siblings Henry and Bea. The Duchess was a grief ridden recluse for much of the book, and in the film her absence when the Waterloo Letters are exposed is explained by her being in Botswana saving elephants; this is 13 months after the royal wedding after all, and the expose happened overnight, so her absence is covered by that. Characters from the book needed to be cut, not just for concision but dramatic effect and simplicity. Henry's mother would be seen as if in direct competition with Madame President as Top Mum, Jane a divisive confusion played against Nora. Miquel instead of da Luna to remove the admittedly boring political context for something more human, sexual jealousy seeking professional clout by the exposure. To me the scene that really does not work is the one with the King. Stephen Fry - the UK's most famous gay man, playing a homophobic monarch, does not wash, especially as his single scene has the wrong tone and style, and lacks correct etiquette (which, if shown, would explain Henry's fears and repressions better than any words). To change the monarch from Queen to King makes sense, rather than be seen as a criticism of a lady not alive to defend herself (actions she would never condone anyway) I also wish the book had been Britpicked by the original editors, especially the choice of names and titles; for many of the errors are howlers only excused by the drive of the narrative. @@kk2002sf

A minor correction: the scene on election night is not at the White House, but in a hotel suite in Austin, Texas. This would not only be traditional (the candidates often "retreat" to their home states for election day and night, and for the acceptance (or concession) speech), but it is the only way Henry and Alex could have bicycled to Alex's boyhood home (which was in Austin). Very good commentary, though, on a movie I still find quite captivating and was a fairly good rendition of the book. (In some ways it made more sense than the book, especially in not including the confusing and improbable back-and-forth allegiances of the Latinx Senator.)

Remember how he teases Alex earlier on for posing with his hand in his pocket: "Are you having a wank?"

It’s essentially the first time he’s being intimate with Alex and is willingly doing this with a person of his choosing for love (not being coerced per say). And then in Texas it’s like he’s really contemplating which way he wants to go - with his love (to the left) or his duty (to the right). And then initially it is all protocol for Henry to be to the on the right until after the Museum scene - where it’s the first time he’s smiling about being able to have both love and protection from Alex whilst also being a Prince - because Alex is covering the small of his back and has his arms protecting Henry! In the scene that Zahra catches them - they’re still sleeping separately as opposed to in KP where they look like they are completely intertwined!

Nice few observations... just a word about the Bond references; the film "Thunderbolt" was actually "Thunderball" but I guess autocorrect put that in... easily forgiven! and the first "Casino Royale" was a spoof (crap actually, the cars were the stars lol! ) But for speculation sake; I could imagine Henry's dad leaving an E-Type to him, classic and beautiful British car! Wish they'd mentioned Henry missing his dad to support him when the emails were leaked... got to admit too; got some mixed feelings about the movie in a couple of parts, but it has some gems in it and when Nick and Taylor are allowed to shine their scenes are pure gold!!!

I’m really happy you highlighted Alex’s anxiety! As much as I loved the movie, I felt it was something really central to Alex in the book and while the movie did its best to showcase that I still wish for more. Especially how they cut his parents divorce and this particular moment when the leaks came out and Alex felt heartbroken over how he and Henry didn’t have the chance to come out their own way.

First of all: WOW, that's extraordinary, so good and perfect, thank you! I like very much the way who've analysed all these things and I think everything is definitely on point... I love how you've marked Alex's issues with anxiety and insecurity, because he seems like a really confident man all the time, but he clearly shows his true colours with the people he trusts and loves (his parents, Nora, Zahra, obviously Henry...) - and I also love the fact that in those moments you can see how Henry, who's been seen generally less "confindent" in most scenes, can actually help him to feel better... The 12th fact on your list is probably my favourite... I immediately noticed that the first time I saw and since then I've not been able to wrap my head about it... They've definitely won... ❤🤍💙

It's true, both have to deal with different aspects, Alex with his political ambition and his insecurities that make him afraid of disappointing others despite his extroverted and sometimes chaotic personality. Henry has always been inside his armor that protects him and at the same time isolates him, giving a cold and distant personality, who Alex in the hospital saw for the first time was not so like that and who later discovers the sweetest person on earth. It is incredible the way Nicholas brings us a Henry where in every gesture, look, and breath we can realize what is happening inside him without having to say a word. They both complement each other, Alex helps Henry to encourage himself to come out of that armor despite his fears and Henry constantly supports Alex by helping him focus and give himself the courage that he has "you are not an impostor" They both have a great future in the industry, I hope we can continue enjoying their jobs, and if it is together much better

Interesting that you mentioned that. I too noticed so many parallels with the real life events. Henry was able to choose the life he really wanted thanks to his mother who finally put her grief of loosing her husband aside and threatened to unseat her mother the queen if she tried to make Henry feel "what she made herself feel"(according to the book). Harry was entirely on his own, his mother long gone and the rest of his family betrayed him. It is gratifying to see him living his life to the full and being happy. BTW, according to Casey McQuiston, one of Harry's names is Henry. It is crazy how many similarities are there between Henry's and Harry's situation even though it was not intentional as the book was released in 2019 before the real life events took place.

I think the movies choice was a good one though. In removing characters not part of the main relationship, it pulled the focus in one the dynamics of the two of them. I see the books author worked on the movie and was happy with the outcome ( more than many of her readers it seems) it would have been a four hour movie with a lot of US politics that I would have found a distraction I think

Well said, you! The sexuality of the actors is totally immaterial, and to restrict actors to roles is manipulative and prejudiced and not what either acting or true sexual representation are about. What it is about is picking the best actors for the roles. At first sight, TZP's role as Alex is easier, the extrovert, the guy on the front foot. But TZP is clearly having to crank up his own personality to be as 'big' as Alex and as open, as well as having to do the hard thing of losing years - not too many, but enough, which is hard - to become more naive, more candid. The commitment he puts into this should not be underrated, nor the subtlety of what he is doing within that character arc of travel. Playing against and up to an actor with the dimension of Nicholas Galitzine is not easy, but TZP does it, and well. There are some good young actors of NG's generation, but I see none other that have his range and depth of feeling and interpretation. He is the rarity of a deeply instinctive actor, whose first professional role was as the star of the film, carrying not only acting but singing and playing guitar, at a time, he has himself admitted, when he di not even know what marks and sight line were (The Beat Beneath My Feet) and he has learnt his trade alone, on the job and in full view, and with what might be considered the handicap of wanting to become and be considered a serious and proper actor/performer, by being so physically beautiful. His interpretation of Henry goes above and beyond a 'rom-com' performance and shows both a deep understanding of his character but also reveals and carries much of himself too, his own education and upbringing brought to bear in ways that cannot be taught (as is Benedict Cumberbatch's) To me, a retired theatre critic and drama judge, one of the hardest things he does in this film seems very simple; his departure from Alex's room after their first encounter; shrugging back into his armour and public character, his back to the camera, raking his hand through his hair, so many tiny physical detail tells, even the way he opens and closes the door. Subtle, sweet, hyper telling. The subtlety of his work in this film has me crossing fingers and toes with glee. This is an actor still developing into a force to be reckoned with. I watch his career with interest, and have done since that first film.

And at the risk of being boring, or borderline obsessive.....another three things: 1. The waiter who takes the cakegate photos surreptitiously with his phone is also the waiter who was trying to give a glass of whisky to another guest but had it stolen by Alex earlier; a little revenge, perhaps? 2. Henry has a little passionate rant about Byron. Byron was a famous English poet, and a lord, with a very racey history. But he was not only considered 'mad, bad and dangerous to know' but was also tall, dark and handsome with dark curly hair. So did Byron, from his youth, provide Henry with his ideal man, both physically and emotionally? And was that why he was predisposed to fall in love with Alex at first sight? 3. Henry;s distinctive suit is hanging in the closet next to him when they are outed by Zahra. And a bonus 4,. More whimsically, in the Paris bedroom scene there is a winged cupid statuette on the mantelpiece. Cupids are the mischevious little gods of love.

Another one figured out. So on and so on. The more I watched I have never seen a movie of this nature so well done and the caricatures so into one another like they really were.
