I haven't read it yet, but I get the feeling SK has put his name to this to catapult his son's career as an author, and not had that much input into the novel himself.

Hi E I've just finished reading Sleeping beauties. And I have to admit that I really enjoyed it. It's certainly not up to the high standards of his recent works like Revival and The outsider ( both of which I think are up there with his best ) but it was good. I agree with you about it having the same feel as Under the dome. I would have liked to have heard more about "our place", but hey, that's the way it goes. I was interested to read in the Author's note that it was originally meant to be a much larger book. I personally feel it could have been a better, tighter book if a hundred pages had been clipped. Keep up the good work E Regards from across the pond.

It was also originally slated to be a television show, so I imagine it would've been even longer than the longer version. Glad you liked it. 🙂

I bought that book like a year and half ago, just read it this past January. I thought I was the only person who didn’t like it. It starts okay, and I believe it had a lot more potential, but the ending is super flat. I mean, none of the main characters have a happy ending, which is okay, I’m not saying they should have, but a happy ending would make it feel like all the fight was worth something, because honestly it feels they are fighting out of and for nothing all the time. And from my perspective, it doesn’t answer any of the implicit questions like why or what. The Outsider is a way, way better book.

I just finished this novel this morning. I gave it a two star rating and that was being generous. Certain parts seems disconnected towards the end. The story was dragging on forever in the second part. The ending was lackluster. I’m glad I got the library version instead of buying the hard copy.

I skipped this one when it came out based on a lot of negative reviews and the high price tag.. I gave it another shot when I found it used for about 5 dollars. I actually love it haha, I have yet to read the last 100 pages but still. Maybe it's because i went in with reaaaally low expectations, and hey 5$ is an okay price for a hardcover.

I'm reading it currently, 1/4 way through. For me it's just OK. I'd heard it was more "literary" than other SK novels but am not finding that at all. The mammoth cast is confusing me a tad, I keep on getting confused for some bizarre reason between Clint and Garth and have to use the list of characters at the front. A shorter cast surely would have enabled better character development, that's what I think I'm missing as I'm reading.....

+Amanda nicholls did you read UNDER THE DOME? That had some of the same problems. Too many characters without their own voices. I think the only ones that stood out for me were Frank and Evie and only Evie because she reminded me so much of another of King's villains.

Edward Lorn yes, I'm not as die hard fan as you but pretty close! I'm re reading them all now, started with Carrie back in 1984 and bought all as were released from then with a huge gap in the 90s in his not so great phase. Then started again when under the dome was released. Look forward to your chronological review, are you reading them all again?

Loved your review. I gave it 1 star. Too long, too many characters. Started off with a bang , then falls flat. I agree, it's a book about choice. The women had the choice to live the way they wanted or return to what they knew and the men had the choice to not act in accordance of negative stigma. Neither world would have longevity.

Hey Trash. Had to back track to this video as I was sure you weren’t fussed on Sleeping Beauties but I’ve just finished it and was surprised how much I enjoyed it. It had some feeling of The Stand (minimal as that was) and I’d agree it’s a little too long but I did like it, especially the characters Clint and Lila Norcross. Oh, by the way, I also enjoyed Joe Hill’s The Fireman. IMO it’s his second best book behind NOS4R2 😷😎👍🏻

The main problem I had was I don't know who was good and who was bad in a lot of cases. Even some of the so called good guys were not likable. As a matter of fact nobody was really likable in the book. It was like It without Pennywise. Could have been chopped in half and made better, too many pages.

Haven't read it yet, but I have not heard one positive review yet on KZbin. Most dont care for the political stance or messages King apparantly tries to send and it's too wordy like you mentioned and too many characters.

It's just overall a badly told story. People get stuck on the politics but while polarizing they're far from the only reason it's bad.

@@EdwardLorn When you look at that cover, the artwork, you dont think politics. King brings a whole new meaning to "dont judge a book by its cover" the cover art puts me in mind of Dream Catchers in a way.

Nope. Did NOT like it. I struggled with the huge cast of forgettable characters, the length was ridiculous, and the end just sucked imho. Really?! 600+ pages to get to that?! Super disappointed. I also felt it was kinda preachy with some political and feminist undertones I didn't really appreciate, but maybe that's not the intent and was just my perception. Did you catch any of that?
@EdwardLorn
@EdwardLorn 6 жыл бұрын
+nicole cory the book was definitely preachy, but I'm used to that with King. He's always written about the politics and issues of our time. Owen even more so. I mean, looking back, that's all books like THE DEAD ZONE we're about was politics. In UNDER THE DOME the main villain was a poor man's Dick Cheney. The politics didn't bother anywhere near as much as the boredom and massive cast, whom I cared nothing about.

sorry to obsess about this, but what I found especially egregious was in the end....the woman adopts a baby with no choice given to her husband...you know why ? because he puts in a swimming pool without telling her....like a freaking swimming pool....not that she has a pool phobia or something...how is that equivalent to raising a baby...the responsibility of nurturing another human being...unless you can hire a pool boy to take care of it or something ? asinine.

I didn't really like any of the characters in this novel. Clint was all right, I guess. I found his wife overly bitchy throughout most of the book. She always expected the worse! But what bothered me the most is that it was a novel King has written before and with much better results. It was UNDER THE DOME without the dome. It was THE GREEN MILE without John Coffey. It was THE STAND without Mother Abigail. It was STORM OF THE CENTURY with a female Andre Linoge. It was a blatant rehash of other good King books that ultimately failed. I agree with your comparisons to THE FIREMAN...but I sort of liked THE FIREMAN a little bit better. I have THE FIREMAN a 2.5 of 5 compared to SLEEPING BEAUTIES a 2/5. I also loved DOUBLE FEATURE! It is, in my opinion, a great American novel.

I sorta liked this book except for the unnecessary political potshots , idc if it has political themes or imagery but he just outright insults a political figure 3x and it ruined that parts . overall it was more fantasy , I like fantasy but I think I have it 3.5 maybe 4 I forget but once I got into it past 200 pages it was an amazing ride
@MewCat100
@MewCat100 6 жыл бұрын
Isn't that always the case though? When authors, celebrities, etc. start spouting off their political views and getting personal on that front, it ruins the fantasy that they built their careers on. Stephen King writes great books (he writes crap sometimes too), but I can guarantee that he and I wouldn't see eye to eye on most political topics. That said, he and I could probably have great conversations about other things. In short, all celebrities, regardless of their genre, need to keep their egos in check and their political opinions to themselves.

And finally, this isn't the first time he's been political. Almost all of his work has a political aspect, but people are triggered right now because of the political climate. Everyone seems to forget about 11/22/63, and THE DEAD ZONE and elements of FIRESTARTER, and the list goes on. Name a book of his and I'll tell you where the politics are. My channel is for people to share opinions about and debate books. I'd appreciate it if you'd stay in your lane and not talk about politics. Oh, wait...😉
@TechNinja08
@TechNinja08 6 жыл бұрын
ok, Duma Key, The Cell, Dark tower series, It, The Shining , Doctor sleep, where is the politics in those? Named those because those (least for me) are the noteworthy and better books(though all his books r good in some way) Though I mostly don't care if it has political themes for sake of plot or character but when you're outright breaking the 4th wall potshotting politician and leaders regardless of viewpoints, it just takes away from the book. Like ok? u break off for that whats the point?, thats what needs to stop, not the generalistic political themes if plot deems it necessary

two stars is what I gave the book on amazon. I did not understand everything you said but I don't hear the english language to often. I was nearly insulted by the man-hating sounds of that book. It was hard to believe that King (or two Kings) really wrode that stuff. You said that you recognize Owen King - I've never read a book by this dude and I must say that I won't if he always writes that way. For my opinion the book was in deed boring, not very scary not much tension. And to many involved characters. But once again: I way really enoyed by the way men are descibed and I don't think that this is something that came by translation. The last

I have not read SK in decades, this did not leave me overall with the feeling I had after reading the likes of The Running Man, Misery, etc. It had its up, but had equal measures of down! It was also too long and had too many characters that I had to keep checking the front for who they were. Also, wait for the paperback, this book is too big a cumbersome to read!

This book sucked! I am so disappointed in the lack of King's talent. Here's why! 1) The entire novel could not go 3 pages without declaring how shitty men are and how all women are perfect goddesses 2) Our Place has no problems like in "man's world" Gee, does anyone know two women who fought or hated each other? 3) Ok, we get that Van is an arm wrestling champion. Do we have to have it beat into us? 4) Wtf was the deal with calling Drew T. Barry by his whole name constantly? Wouldn't Drew or Mr. Barry have been sufficient ?

I loved it I found it an easy flowing read . How strong the woman were who tried their best to stay awake How quickly men turned to violence and the ugly things they did to the women sleeping .How a husbands saw it as an opportunity to get rid of their wives. In the mend world it fell apart . Meantime the woman in the future worked together to get power ,food ,water growing food .Everyone wold sit down and talk about the problems in the subjects that needed solving. Also loved Eve and the animals who listen and watch and talk each other. Just imagine if that happened in real life . I know for a fact some women would have choose to stay . It was a good book a lot of men didn't like mmmmmmm ?!!!!!!!🤔

I liked the book a lot! I found it more balanced than just "men bad" "women good" scenario, but also that women are capable of great evil and men capable of great good (which is true) and vice versa. Plus, there was a great line of how a female character found women continuously talking of their emotions and feelings to be quite boring after a while. So to me it was both tragic and comic at times and a good read overall.
