It’s definitely a “are you here for the politics or the romance?” situation. I started reading the series because it involved a well-done enemies to lovers story, of which I haven’t read a good one in a while. However, I do also love the chaos of navigating the political environment of Faerie.

I 100% agree the first half of the book wasn’t really that interesting in my opinion. It was really slow paste and nothing really interesting was happening. But the second half of the book was actually interesting and I was actually hooked. Comparing this book to the red queen. I felt like the red queen was way more interesting and intense.

Well i hated the ending, and the epilogue couldn't even fix it. Not all surprises are good. This is nothing but a cautionary tale of how people can make you into a monster from which you can never return to yourself, but it should have at least shown how she overcame losing Locke and Cardan by finding a more noble, fulfilling purpose than merely wielding power over a throne her better self never wanted. She still didn't even belong to either world in the end, and she had nothing more fitting to show for it than hated, lonely, power over fairyland (through Cardan)? I know she thought she was making fairyland better, but yeah, what happens after a year? I thought this was "enemy-to-friend," but it was merely enemy-to-worse-enemy. How stupid and disappointing (even though, again, congrats for surprising me lol)! How is this supposed to be constructive (despite the dark beauty of its description of how it feels to be an innocent outcast from every land and unable to find yourself again after suffering excruciating loss at the hands of the humans and their dumb pride)?

On the plus side, maybe the second book is what I kept waiting to happen? But now, Cardan would have to be a fairy on steroids to ever even trust Jude again. She's ruined what was trying to (patiently) happen for me. I loved the way her courage and intelligence grew, but the ending pushed me over the edge, taking the exciting transformation into someone not to be messed with waaay too far. They had all trusted each other and agreed! And her final plan was not that much better, just a temporary bandage to what they had already figured out they shoud do. Ugh. Beautiful writing, though. Made fairies actually somewhat relatable as far as not being comfortable with lying (couldn't even), and being playful and intelligent, not particularly fertile as bunnies, being more long-term, etc. The world was fantastic, truly, and much of it aligned with commonly reported folklore, such as the dancing, etc. And there was no fluff.

@@brandic89their relationship is one of those complicated ones. It develops more over the next two books as the characters start sorting out their feelings a lot more. I would say just try reading the 2nd book. Also since it’s from Jude’s perspective how she sees Cardan is different how cardan actually feels.
