That first book you reviewed showed a pretty tree with reverse applique. Two pieces of fabric with cutting the design from the top fabric to showcase the bottom fabric color. I've seen some beautiful pieces that were done with needle turn applique This is also nice if using wool (at least on the top) because as you know felted wool pieces do not unravel when cut. Both types would be beautiful with stitched embellishments. I think that "tree" that you marked in the book is going to be beautiful as reverse applique if you decide to do that.
