It's a shame to ruin a good book like that, so it's tempting to use a bad book, but I also don't want people to see Dan Brown on my bookshelves.

I'm getting on a bit now, and Im starting to think about what happens after I'm gone. I think I'll make one of these, and hide something in there for my sons to find. Money or a safety deposit box key or something. They'll only find it when they go through the house cleaning out all my things after my funeral. Morbid I know but it's a way for me to have a little chuckle at the thought of my funeral whenever it might be.

Not a good idea to hide from relative or heirs, because I know when a house is cleaned out things get tossed without a moments thought. Better to leave a message for heir in your will, and just use this edge safe box for when you are out of the house on errands.

Holy moly, did you modgepodge every single page!? How long did that take? P.S. I love LastPass, I've been using it since 2010. Great to see them sponsoring maker content! 🤓👍

I modpodged the first 100 pages or so where the magnet gets glued in, However, after completing that I realized I could have just as well modpodged the outside of those pages, like I did on the rest of the book. It gives a better result, and the pages don't get all wavy.

Using an electric fret saw to cut out the pages would be quicker after you drill the pilot holes, especially if you plan to make a few. As far as I can see you only needed the magnets because of the spring. A contact switch would be easier and quicker. Also its not too much of a leap to fix two or more books of different sizes and thicknesses together side by side creating a long cavity inside to store larger objects. Heck the whole line of books on the shelve could be one long safe. I made one a few years ago just make sure that none of the books are of any interest to anyone or the gig is up :)

I have made a few of them as gifts. I like the magnet idea! I sandwiched the pages (without the covers) between 2 pieces of 1/4" ply and used my scroll saw to cut out the middle.

Darbin Orvar also the thrift stores have some "pretty" old books, it's either recycle are landfill eventually. I love my books too but I wouldn't cart books I don't like around in my life so I'm not about to say "why would you ruin a perfectly "looking" (notice I didn't say good lol)book?" Instead I say "what a great idea to do on a book nobody wants!" Have a blessed day and you look great, good thing winters coming, pregnant in the summer can be trying :)

About 18.000 views on the first day...well, I think, _this_ book isn't a good hiding spot anymore...:)...! But very well done and a good result. Although I would have picked something like Stephen King or so. Nevertheless thanks for the vid and maybe try to create some more secret places in furniture? I like this stuff! But I think, especially your next months and years will have a different main focus than creating stuff. So I'm already keeping my fingers crossed that the delivery will be as comfortable as possible and the first months won't stress you out too much.

Beautifully done, but professional burglars would sweep out the entire contents of a bookshelf, and look at the results on the floor - so I trust your magnets are strong enough to keep the book closed when it hits the ground. If not . . . . . . . BTW - at 77 my memory is fading fast, so I have been a LastPass user for some years now.

I made a book safe, to hollow out the middle I used a knife like you did and then tried a dremel cut off wheel. The dremel didn't work well, the cutoff wheel was too small, and I broke several of them. I wonder of an oscillating tool would work better, especially using a piece of wood to clamp down the pages like you did when drilling the corner holes.

I like the idea of taking a book and doing something else with it. I have several books that I probably won't read anymore and I've always wanted to use the pages to cover things, kind of like wallpaper. This way, I can take the center of the page out, still get that effect, but still use the book for a decoration with a secret compartment. I like the inspiration.

I wonder if the switch for the light could have been routed thru the magnets in a pre-Modge Podge step? Then you could've skipped the spring altogether? But I certainly don't know enough about electronics to know if that was even doable.

Nicely done-- I suspect most burglars wouldn't be interested in too many of the books on your bookshelf. You have a very interesting library, eclectic and material well worth reading. Something of little interest to burglars and wood be thieves.
