This book is listed on multiple banned for schools lists. What educational value may be derived here? At what point does this impinge on parental roles? Not all parents are willing for a book described as softcore porn to be taught in school.

Hi, high school freshman who read this book last semester as part of a curriculum here. Describing Speak as "softcore porn" is highly HIGHLY misleading. It's a story of a girl's journey through her first year of high school while healing from the trauma she got from being raped at age thirteen. Many teenagers have been through similar situations. This is a story of gaining the courage to speak up about sexual violence. Melinda's character perfectly represents what trauma looks and feels like. This book made me and many others feel seen and heard. Also, banned books in schools aren't always banned for good or even valid reasons. Speak involves underage drinking, which is not glorified or encouraged. It involves rape and underage sex, also not glorified or encouraged. I will say that teachers should give a warning for a certain chapter in which the sexual assault is described, but other than that I believe it is appropriate for high school.

@@sawyerpaddock8626 yet she fails to speak, the protagonist is not arrested, accused, and carries on to repeat offend. This book is written to the literary level of a fifth grader or less, again where is the literary value? I'll await your response, please be compelling, I'm open minded and able to adjust my opinion. But, " we are the hornets, the horny horny hornet has no place in my child education. From a parental viewpoint this is rubbish.
