In freshman year we had to read this book for an assignment. I have dealt with sexual violence. I could not finish this book because it gave me flashbacks and nightmares. My mom had to read it for me and give me the summary. Eventually I read it myself. I cried so much. I loved the book; it absolutely haunts me, but I love the book.

That one Awkward NOODLE I’m reading this in freshman year too i’m so sorry for what you’ve been thru 😟

I'm so sorry you had to go through that. I'm an English teacher and I feel if your teacher just had a general understanding that the book made you have very negative feeling and experiences (without giving details), I would hope your teacher could have given you another book to complete the assignment. I know I would have. Be happy every day!

Larry Canupp I didn't tell her until afterwards, I don't know why I waited. But I did go back and read the book, and I'm actually happy I did. It helped me find peace. Thank for the well wishes. My teacher did apologise, and I'm sure if I did tell her sooner she would have given an alternate assignment.

nobodyaskedtf it's ok, I'm actually happy that I went back to read it. It helped me a lot. Thank you for the support. The book is written well and I hope you like it.

I am in the exact same situation right now. I have an essay due in a few hours on it and I am sitting crying because it's so similar to my own experience that I can't help but have flashbacks

I watched the movie years ago as a child, after experiencing something similar last year I am returning to read the book. I’m very scared to read it, and it might make things worse at first, but I think it might help to listen to someone else who also understands.. wish me luck!

I love this book to death, we started it about 2 weeks ago in class. I finished the whole book in one sitting and begged my teacher to give me something else to do with it because although I may not have been raped I still see myself in Melinda. I loved the book so much and it really did make me emotional all throughout, which is something no book has ever done before.

Thank you, I wonder if you are a ♏️ , I have similar ways of thinking, creative with art, and overall personality is very alike. Thank you so much for taking the time to make such a nice creative video and showing us your emotional side as far as how you were drawn to the YA novel. I agree, listening 👂 on audio book really helps set tone. I like your thoughts on thematically alluding to moments of art throughout the book like 💎 , going to finish in ‘Speak’ now have to for class (sigh..!) I hate being forced to read but after you said this I will give it a try -______- ;(

I picked this up just randomly and wanted to read a good nice girly book between the epic fantasies and postmodern crap. Didn't know anything about it, what happened in the book, complete blind read but, due to most of the women I've been with having suffered a similar fate as Melinda did, fifty pages in I figured what happened at the party and just went 'oh... Oh no." Good read though. Will recommend.

I read this book in my freshman year of school. What made me upset was how light the people were taking the trauma of Melinda being raped. It made me upset

So I know I'm late here, but I'm really intrigued by the design of the books behind you. Can you, or someone in the comments, tell me what the books are that are behind you to the left of your head in the video at eye level? They are blue with what looks like a castle or something with a sunset on the spine of the books.

i dont like this book. i feel it depicts rape victims as weak and as if they can recover from it by just talking about it. i had to read it for my english class and i think it could be triggering for victims.
@WildeMermaid4 жыл бұрын
It doesn't depict Rape victims as weak. Melinda is struggling with what seems to me as PTSD. Telling at the end didn't heal her and make her better, but she wasn't in it alone anymore. For some of us speaking about it can help in some way. Yes it is definitely triggering but it's a pretty good portrayal in all honesty. Speaking up about it takes courage and strength. All Survivors are strong whether they speak up or not. Melinda's character is strong as well and inspiring. As a Survivor with PTSD myself I love Speak, it helped me when I needed it. Plus maybe it'll get other teens to be more understanding.
