Nonsense the power that the church had by the fake donation of constantine. Only. After a 1000 yrs of acheiving its ultimate purpose of power!!!! It admitted finally in 1885 that the donation of constantine was a fake. So in conclusion what pope's announce in public is not same privately .. politicians as in pope's same tactics.

Just started reading his book Pope and Mussolini. Intriguing and fascinating so far. The book says that in the early days fascists utterly rejected Catholic influence in politics. Mussolini despised the Church. Later, he decided he had to appropriate the Church in order to ally with the authoritarian model of the Church and better control the population. This is also a product of Royalty imo which was the entire authoritarian, European paradigm of governance until Communism and Socialism cracked that egg. (Did he really wear the Star of David?) It's certainly well established that not many corners of the world at that time were free of racism in general and anti Jewish sentiments in particular . Individual resistance seems to have been the exception, even international condemnation and rescue missions were rare, apart from the war itself and the underground. I mean wasn't the US selling Cyclon B gas to the Nazis during the first half of the war? It still seems to me that Mussolini held all the cards in this story for a full 20 years of fascism, not the Pope.
