Far From the Tree meant SO much to me as someone who was adopted. I felt it was such a realistic portrayal of people like us and it was the first time I truly felt like I could relate to the characters!

Paper Butterflies by Lisa Heathfield is an awesome one. It follows a girl from the age of 10/11 into her 20s dealing with abuse from her stepmom and stepsister. Her mom was black and she died, and now her dad married a white lady, so she is the only black one in her family. Her stepmom forces her to overeat among many other abuses and her dad is oblivious to it all. She makes a friend in her early life who really gets her through a lot of it and it is just such a sweet and heartbreaking story.

Letters to the Lost by Brigid Kemmerer was really good. Hard hitting but cute elements to it as well. Also What to Say Next (I’m blanking on the author’s name...Julie Buxbaum? I think that’s it) was really good. One of the characters has autism and was written so well. Oh, and Challenger Deep by Neal Shusterman. So. Good. I LOVED Far From the Tree and Second Chance Summer is probably my favorite Morgan Matson book. Both of those books had me ugly-crying several times.

I really loved second chance summer I cried so hard while reading it. I also recommend it to others. I enjoyed the sun is also a star but did not loved it as much as I thought I would just because of the unrealistic coincidences in the story but other than that it was actually enjoyable.

I haven't read a ton of these but some of them are on my list. I think A List of Cages was relatively good and it seemed true to life. The way there weren't a lot of adults that wanted to help. I think there are a lot of kids who can relate and I think the realistic aspect has led to a lot of people connecting to it.

I loved Far From the Tree, wouldn't say it has zero romance as they all have love interests though I am glad it was not a main focus as the romance was the one bit I didn't like about it. Some of my fave hard hitters are Let's Get Lost and Scarred (Willow in the US) with the death of parents. Boy's Don't Cry with a teenage boy left to raise his daughter while his brother suffers from homophobia. Gone, Gone, Gone which is set during the D.C. Sniper shootings.

These sound like great recommendations! Just a note, calling the biological mother the “real mom” in Far From the Tree isn’t super awesome from an adoptive family point of view. I am very much my boys’ real mom as is their bio mom who we see often. Not chastising, just sharing because most people who don’t have adoption in their family don’t think about it. I can’t wait to read The Sun is Also a Star!
