I cried once while reading ASOIAF (don’t get me wrong- I was heartbroken a whole lot, but more often too shocked or numb to actually weep). It was this line that just broke me. Such an underrated quote, and one from the series that will stay with me forever.
@ancatdal

Absolutely agree, it's one of the lines that will make me tear up whenever I read it. It completely captures how our bodies can age away from how we see ourselves. My mum told me she still feels like 'her at twenty-five' inside, not like 'a sixty-something year old lady'. And it also strikes at the losses that by necessity must come with living a long, full life. We must leave people and places behind in memories as we walk ever forward, but we leave parts of ourselves behind with them. I really hope there is an ASOIAF-afterlife for Aemon to meet with his siblings and niblings ❤😭

How did I guess that your favourite quote would be from Jon Con? Seriously though, under his fat, jolly facade, Wyman Manderly is truly savage. For all that GRRM claims that Sam's his self-insert, I think he's Lord Manderly, hiding some deep cruelty under the appearance of Santa Claus.

"You have a great thirst for a small man." "Oh, I think that Lord Tyrion is quite a large man," Maester Aemon said from the far end of the table. He spoke softly, yet the high officers of the Night's Watch all fell quiet, the better to hear what the ancient had to say. "I think he is a giant come among us, here at the end of the world." Tyrion answered gently, "I've been called many things, my lord, but giant is seldom one of them." "Nonetheless," Maester Aemon said as his clouded, milk-white eyes moved to Tyrion's face, "I think it is true." For once, Tyrion Lannister found himself at a loss for words. He could only bow his head politely and say, "You are too kind, Maester Aemon."

One of my favourite quotes, and favourite characters too! My mother was a big GRRM fan, and I used to call her Lady Catelyn or Mama Wolf as a joke. I even embroidered a bookmark in House Tully colours for her. She thought it was a high compliment, because Catelyn did everything for her children, and mum lived for her kids, and then her grandkids. Now that I think about the similarities between them, I'm having a visit from the Onion Ninjas...

A favorite quote of mine is "Men's lives have meaning, not their deaths," by Gerris Drinkwater when he's trying to persuade Quentin not to enact his dragon-taming scheme. I think that quote really embodies the purpose behind GRRM's deconstruction of heroic high fantasy. It's not subversion for subversion's sake, but to highlight the beauty of everyday life that is being poisoned by the game of thrones and the honor codes that keep it going.

So many great quotes come from Jamie and Brienne's interactions. I love the "Wench/My name is..." thing but I remember laughing out loud when Jamie jumps into the bear pit and says (I'm paraphrasing because I don't have it in front of me) "You are still a maiden I hope? Oh good, I only rescue maidens." He plays it like a quip but (probably only subconsciously at this point in his arc) he is concerned about her well being and just how much abuse she had to suffer due to his not taking the honorable route initially. That's the crux of his character for me, how he started off super honorable and just got so jaded over time, but then along comes Brienne, living the honor code he sort of convinced himself was never real and she re-sparks that need to be honorable in him again. I especially love one of his first interaction with Cersei after he hangs out with Brienne for a while and she can smell the honor on him and it's like a garlic to a vampire for her.

Just as Jaime is about to pass out in the bath, Brienne calls him 'Kingslayer' and he has to responds "My name is Jaime". I don't know what others say, but I love that you appreciate the beautiful hopeful moments in A Song of Ice and Fire. Too much is made of its reputation as a gritty grimdark deconstruction when I find it to be a Romantic reconstruction of fantasy chivalry. I don't know if this is cheating, but I'm going to paraphrase a quote from Dunk & Egg, which I believe in context is a summation of the hopeful light that GRRM writes so well amidst the dark: "They are for me," he thought. In terms of great scenes besides the one you mentioned, the birth of the dragons in Daenerys X is arguably one of the best chapters Martin has written, only rivaled with scenes like the Red Wedding and Jaime's talk with his aunt, but those have two very different vibes to them. One is depressing and dire, one is calm, comforting, and relieving, but Danny's is powerful and ominous in the best ways possible.

Two quotes I really like come from a character that often flies under the radar for most people. Doran Martell. "Words are arrows Arianne, once loosed you cannot call them back." “Vengeance.” His voice was soft, as if he were afraid that someone might be listening. “Justice.” Prince Doran pressed the onyx dragon into her palm with his swollen, gouty fingers, and whispered, “Fire and blood.”

“Theon,” he repeated. “My name is Theon. You have to know your name.” - The Sacrifice, A Dance With Dragons. While Dance isn’t my favorite (Feast like you is mine) Theon’s ark is probably my favorite thing in the books, and as someone who watch the show first, this line was the first to truly give me chills. Also Cat, I think she’s one of the best characters in the series as well. I’ve heard so many people criticize her for the way she handles some things, but to me she represents a desperate mother who just wants what’s left of her family back no matter what, even if it means making decisions that aren’t exactly the most tactically sound. Personally I think she also represents what a mother should be to an extent, fierce determination to protect her children, trusting (to a fault when I comes to Lisa) and the willingness to be blunt when speaking about things that are important.

Jaime and Jon are my two favorites. I love how similiar they are while still contrasting each other. -Theyre both the son of a Warden. -They both join a legendary military order only to realize said order has "fallen" and is just full of murderers and rapists. -both recieve hand injuries -both inherit a Valyrian sword from outside their family -both turn down leaving their order to become heir of their family. -they both become the Leader of their orders. -they both have an illicit love affair But when you contrast them -jaime is the well loved first born golden child, Jon the despised bastard that is barely welcome -the kingsgaurd is viewered as an honor, while the night's watch is a punishment -jaime's sword is stolen while Jon's is earned. -jaime is promoted through nepotism when his family fires the previous lord commander, Jon is chosen by his the men he leads.(Removed a show detail I slipped in by accident)

I'm denying its existence. 2) (To Cersei)Who you lie with is no matter to me . . . although it doesn't seem quite just that you should open your legs for one brother and not the other." But my favorite quote in general is from Doran. One to Sand Snakes the other to Arianne 1)“I am not blind, nor deaf. I know that you all believe me weak, frightened, feeble. Your father knew me better. Oberyn was ever the viper. Deadly, dangerous, unpredictable. No man dared tread on him. I was the grass. Pleasant, complaisant, sweet-smelling, swaying with every breeze. Who fears to walk upon the grass? But it is the grass that hides the viper from his enemies and shelters him until he strikes. Your father and I worked more closely than you know … but now he is gone. The question is, can I trust his daughters to serve me in his place?" 2) She narrowed her eyes. "What is our heart’s desire?" "Vengeance." His voice was soft, as if he were afraid that someone might be listening. "Justice." Prince Doran pressed the onyx dragon into her palm with his swollen, gouty fingers, and whispered, "Fire and blood."

I'm a huge sucker for the quotes from the Starklings where they find connection to Winterfell: Bran: "The stone is strong, Bran told himself, the roots of the trees go deep, and under the ground the Kings of Winter sit their thrones. So long as those remained, Winterfell remained. It was not dead, just broken. Like me, he thought. I’m not dead either.” Arya: "“It’s just a sword,” she said, aloud this time . . .but it wasn’t. Needle was Robb and Bran and Rickon, her mother and her father, even Sansa. Needle was Winterfell’s grey walls, and the laughter of its people. Needle was the summer snows, Old Nan’s stories, the heart tree with its red leaves and scary face, the warm earthy smell of the glass gardens, the sound of the north wind rattling the shutters of her room. Needle was Jon Snow’s smile. He used to mess my hair and call me “little sister,” she remembered, and suddenly there were tears in her eyes." Sansa: "She wondered where this courage had come from, to speak to him so frankly. From Winterfell, she thought. I am stronger within the walls of Winterfell."

I agree 100% with your stance on Catelyn, and her being a phenomenal representation of motherhood! It's not only motherhood though, the way the entire concept of parenthood in general is written is SO good. Jon's resurrection is fundamentally different to Lady Stoneheart's and Beric's, because his body will be preserved in an Ice Cell, and because he's a Warg who's soul will be preserved inside Ghost's body. The changes in Jon will come from the trauma of being dead, and for staying inside Ghost for so long, unlike with the other Fire wights who have seen a deterioration of their soul.

"Words are Wind" quoted throughout ASOIAF by many different characters. I love the idea behind the quote because it speaks of action not words. I also like how Martin uses it to express how unreliable and unstable words are when left to the wind to carry and hold them. Words last no longer than it takes to say them like an reciting an Oath. ”Men are men, vows are words, and words are wind.” Iron Emmett says this to Jon Snow. Now if those words were to land on paper and compiled and stored into a book or in a document then those words no longer are Wind but power. Those landed words become stored knowledge. And as the saying goes "Knowledge is Power". This power is expressed as a weapon by Tyrion Lannister when he answers his questions to why does he read so much? "Well, my brother has his sword, and I have my mind. And a mind needs books like a sword needs a whetstone. That's why I read so much, Jon Snow". The Maesters understand that power better than anyone in this world. Most of those in this world are illiterate including many Lords. Literacy is a weapon weilded by the Maesters over various high Lords. And as Lady Dustin has stated "The grey rats read and write our letters, even for such lords as cannot read themselves, and who can say for a certainty that they are not twisting the words for their own ends? What good are they, I ask you?” I find myself using the quote "Words are Wind" and have adopted it when I feel someone is all talk and no action. I believe anytime that occurs it must be recognized as a great quote. And I believe George must feel the same since references it 13 times in his A Song of Ice and Fire series. Now we just need George to land his words being carried by the Winter wind onto paper and compiled into a book.

I also enjoyed the one Melisandre chapter we got. My fav quote: "Lord Tywin Lannister did not, in the end, shit gold." Apart from being a funny line, it was so awesome to have this monster who we've seen commit countless war crimes and vile abuse towards his family for hundreds of pages die such an unceremonious death. So often in fantasy we see the big bads go out in a blaze of glory, or die fighting the good guy in a grand final battle. Tywin was awful, and it just felt very fitting for him to have an awful death. In a series where so many people don't get what they deserve, isn't it great to have someone get what's coming to them?

The other 2 in my top 5 could change depending on future books but for now, I'd say my other 2 are Sansa & Cersei. I've been a Sansa fan from the start and I think she had fantastic character growth. And Cersei...Cersei is just such a great villain. She's just so genuinely horrible and I love it. Asha & Theon are also contenders, depending on where things go with them.
