#reconstructionofreligiousthoughtinislam
This is a description and review of the first chapter of the great philosophical literature written by Dr. Allama Iqbal titled "The Reconstruction of Religious Thought in Islam". It propagates the concept of pursuing modern knowledge since it is in alignment with the message of the Holy Quran. In the 2nd part of the lecture, Iqbal talks about characteristics of a Religious experience which is again a very interesting concept to understand. Their are several themes running across this first lecture but the most profound is the concept of Thought and Intuition. The video will help you understand what it is all about.
The Introductory video of this book can be viewed below.

The world thinks that our religion does not emphasize logical reasoning even we Muslims thinks like that but I am really fascinated by Iqbal's point of view , how beautifully he explained that Islam emphasize on experimenting, innovations and logical reasoning and how Allah orders us to look upon everything and think about the processes of this life. It's not easy to understand Iqbal's perspective sometimes but once you understand his perspective you feel so amazed. I am excited for next chapters as well. Thank you book buddy

Quran has said earlier that Allah created The whole universe in 7 Days and nights scientists before didn't believe it but now Science has found that Time in space travels at different speeds. They found this with the speed of light that travelled from someplace to our direction and the travelling speed of that light was different. We know that Speed is the distance covered over time, thus scientists concluded that the time we have in our part of the Universe is different from other parts and it is possible that our Million or billion of years could be equal to One day in the other part of the universe. This phenomenon is also defined in Film "Interstellar" I suggest you to watch this, it's amazing.

Allama Iqbal has always been a debated personality just because of his sheer ability to put fear aside and put up revolutionary thoughts like these on the forefront. I am absolutely amazed at how he justifies the strength of the faith embodied by him solely by questioning religion itself. The extraction that I took from this is that it is only the true believers that question faith and religion in the first place because they know that an answer always exists. Islam is indeed the perfect religion. Thank you so much for this review, looking forward to the entire series coming up 😁

This is what i gathered. As the book title goes by the name of reconstruction of religious thought in islam. Hence, Iqbal, in my view , has tried to set the premise of continuous learning and use of rational to seek a more intimate contact with the reality. As Islam is like a coin, whose two sides are temporal and religious or deen and duniya or reason and revelation. These both things go hand in hand and parallel. They both are intermixed and cannot be separated as what Christians did with church and state. The backwardness of Muslims are due to the decrees of Ghazali who misunderstood that reason and revelation are completely separate tangibles and hence, swung his weight to the area of predestination when he struggled in some areas and as a result closed the gates of reasoning (ijtihad). This made Muslims backward because for them, the real intimate contact with the reality remained in the traditions of old generations. As for the religious part , the ultimate goal is the mystic experience or intuition which cannot be expressed. I think it is the same state when one's soul gets united with the divine light even when its alive in a physical abode (body). I believe Iqbal wont be staying to just using intellect to study temporal things like science and philosophy. This is just addressing one sphere of the coin i-e temporal, duniya and reason. He might soon stress that Muslims should revisit the physical forms of age long traditions and rituals which are no longer relevant in the contemporary time, place and circumstances. If that's the case, this would be a problem for the Muslims belonging to Sunni interpretation, because they look back to 1400 years old traditions for the salvation. Personally, as a Shia Muslim, i am perfectly okay with this because we believe that the authority of Imams (A.S) from Ahlul Bayt is to reinterpret Islam according to the age & time. Hence, adjusting the practices and forms of the rituals while keeping the essence intact. This would keep the universality of Islam alive in every age and would ensure that Muslims remain forward and not backward.

in Quran, Allah SWT said "afalaa ta'qiluun". This shows that Allah instructed use to think rationally. Allah SWT also made multiple claims of Quran being free of contradictions, which is another example of the value of rationality. Logic is objective and whatever we perceive is via logic. Anything which is not logical is contradictory and doesn't make any sense. So Islam has to be in line with aql. Or else it will be false. I agree we need both spiritual experience. But we also need sound reasoning too . Or else there will be no objectivity. Everyone will have subjective truths. Truth is objective. Truth does not care about our feelings or perception. Intuition/Fitrah is hardwired into us by Allah SWT as a catalyst to know the truth (that Allah exists). But the problem is our fitrah can be clouded due to external influences of our society, cultural upbringing etc. Therefore logic is needed as an apriori parameter which will pave the way to absolute truth.

In his book "The Reconstruction of Religious Thought in Islam," Iqbal praised Imam al-Ghazali as a great philosopher and mystic who had a profound influence on Islamic thought. He referred to al-Ghazali as the "reviver of the second half of the Islamic intellectual tradition" and highlighted his contributions to theology, philosophy, and Sufism. Iqbal also praised al-Ghazali's approach to philosophy and his efforts to reconcile reason and revelation. He argued that al-Ghazali's emphasis on the importance of inner spiritual experience and direct knowledge of the divine was essential for reviving the spiritual dimension of Islam. Iqbal saw al-Ghazali's philosophy as a way of combining rational inquiry with spiritual practice and achieving a deeper understanding of the nature of reality. Please clear this thing while discussing Gazali!

In the first chapter of the book reconstruction of religious thought , there's a profound verse from the Quran, Surah Al-Baqarah, which encapsulates a fundamental aspect of knowledge. It recounts the dialogue between Allah and the angels when Allah declares His intention to create a vicegerent on earth. The angels express concern, questioning why Allah would grant authority to humans who might bring about destruction and shed blood. Allah responds, asserting His wisdom beyond their comprehension. Then, Allah teaches Adam the names of all things and presents him before the angels, challenging them to name those things. However, the angels fail, while Adam successfully names everything. This verse highlights a crucial concept: the essence of knowledge begins with naming. It's through our ability to assign names to things that we comprehend and communicate about them. Whether it's trees, atoms, or genes, the foundation of knowledge lies in the act of naming. This profound insight from the Quran underscores the significance of language and naming in the acquisition and dissemination of knowledge.

I think Greek philosophers were also interested in how the universe works not just on human social life, that's why Democratis came to the conclusion that everything in nature is made of tiny particles (atoms) to form different forms, and sophists who were worried about how nature works, on of the Greek philosophers said that sun is only a giant ball of fire and not a god, and they were the first to came to conclusion that everything must have a single primary cause, Greek philosopher Plotinus who was a follower of Neoplatonism school called this it "THE ONE" which most probably is the steping stone of monotheism.

It is impossible for a rationalist to fathom the depth of spiritual experience as they would not let go their intellect to dare exploring and experiencing spiritual world. Thy would rather stay at the margins and call the "dare devils" naïve. Unfortunately there are many ilks of Perwaiz Hoodbhoy who are using their ill directed energies to deny Iqbal the status of a philosopher. The reconstruction of religious thought in Islam may be a guide to them.

It's very difficult to understand the message of God and universe. God sent the Prophets ,scholars and philosophers to decipher the same message but it needs an effort in our part too to reach our cognitive and intuitive results. Religion as well as analytical thought are two inseparable things.

Our education, experience, skills are stored on brain memory as a knowledge and thought is responce of that knowledge. When memory of brain at certain problems is pressurized to find the solution then intuition is developed.
