Before Partition Karachi was *A Hindu-majority city and a Sindhi-speaking city* , The architecture of the old quarters of Karachi resembled old Bombay, a port city with which it shared many similarities of culture, languages and food. But Karachi's demography & development underwent drastically after 1947.

I am from Karachi and you are wrong. Central Karachi was actually predominantly Gujrati-speaking. Quaid-e-Azam was also born in Karachi and spoke Gujrati. Sindhis and Baloch lived on the outskirts. Among the Gujrati-speaking people, there were Hindus but also many Muslims and Parsis. The man who truly built Karachi was Jamshed Nusserwanjee Mehta, the first Mayor of Karachi, who was a Parsi, and he is the one who transformed Karachi into a modern city. Karachi did not fall into ruin right after 1947. The city's administration collapsed when Pakistan's capital was moved from Karachi to Islamabad. Karachi was then taken over by the Sindh government. When Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto came to power, he abolished the once glorious civil service system to put Sindhis from rural areas in charge of the city. They immediately started taking over amenity plots and started selling them at high prices. They allowed illegal construction as long as they could collect money from such "leases." At the same time, hundreds of thousands of Biharis started pouring in from the former East Pakistan, and they started slums which are still there. Another wave of immigrants came in from Afghanistan, and they too started slums which kept on growing. Karachi also took in everyone from the rest of Pakistan who had nowhere else to go and no livelihood. And that is why Karachi is what it is. It is now a fabric of all ethnic, religious and linguistic groups that one can think of. Despite all that, it is still the most liberal and welcoming city in all of Pakistan. I think Karachi is not a lost cause. It still has a LOT of potential. It can develop into a much nicer city if people just practice more cleanliness and have fewer children.

Mostly hindus were forced to migrate from karachi during partition. Most Christians back then were british who eventually had to leave and parsi community in Karachi were always less in numbers but were very rich in resources. There are currently around 1000 parsi people in Karachi and at their peak they were somewhere around 6000 in the early 1940s
@QabilAGhor2 жыл бұрын
Karachi was actually built by Muhajirs who came from India right after 1947. Before the Partition, there was only a small area which is now central Karachi that was developed. It did not even have offices for the new capital. I am 62 years old, born and raised in Karachi, so I remember the old Karachi very well. Muhajirs were the educated elite who were instrumental in the creation of Pakistan, and they served as its first civil servants. That is why Pakistan was booming until mid 1960s! Karachi was doing okay until the capital was moved to Islamabad and Karachi fell into the hands of PPP's Sindh government which only wanted to loot it and never thought of it as its own, perhaps until now.
@zeerakkhan12302 жыл бұрын
@@QabilAGhor agree but it's totally unfair to blame PPP entirely for present Karachi. Mqm have played their role very well in the destruction of this city. The last honest man serving the city in government was Naimatullah Khan.
@QabilAGhor2 жыл бұрын
@@zeerakkhan1230 You are correct that MQM was a disaster for Karachi. I have been against it from day one. But the problem actually started with Bhutto. He was very devisive and drew a wedge between Sindhis and the Urdu speaking community. For no good reason at all, he made Sindhi one of the official languages when all other provinces had opted for Urdu. Two of the largest cities in Sindh were predominantly Urdu speaking, so it created a riot which claimed the lives of many people. Then he created a separate quota system for Rural Sindh. Sindhis in Karachi and Hyderabad also qualifiedfor for the Urban Sindh quota, and so the quota for Sindhis became almost 95%. The Urdu speaking community was marginalized. Sindhis were brought in from the interior and stuffed into PIA, Steel Mill and nationalized banks. This was outright racism which led to the creation of MQM. This is why I blame PPP. They created divisions from which Karachi and even the whole of Sindh could never recover. Bhutto was not a socialist. He was a racist. And his legacy is that everytime PPP feels threatened, it starts playing the Sindh Card. The Establishment knows that and that is why it has always allowed PPP to loot Sindh with impunity.

That is correct. In the old days, there was a rivalry between Muhajirs, who had come mostly from UP, and Punjabis, but still there was some healthy competition :-) The civil service system was autonomous and had its own rules, standards, and exams, and it selected people on the basis of merit. Since most of the educated elite were Muhajir, they dominated the civil service. Ayub Khan had a problem with the people of Karachi, because they were always protesting, and eventually were instrumental in ending his rule. I am sure in the back of his mind was the idea to move the capital north, from where he could govern more peacefully. Karachi was then made part of Sindh, which was probably a mistake, because Karachi was never really a Sindhi city. In pre-Partition days it was mostly Gujrati and after the Partition a Muhajir-dominated city. When the capital was moved, most civil servants stayed behind in Karachi because Islamabad had nothing. It was very, very undeveloped. So new civil servants, mostly from Punjab, were hired. That was still okay because the new bureaucrats were hired under the established civil service system. Z.A. Bhutto, however, changed that. He took over the civil service system, which had previously worked beautifully, in order to hire more Sindhis. The idea was to give more jobs to Sindhis, whether they were qualified or not, not only in the civil service but also in PIA. If that were not enough, he started nationalizing to give jobs to his people. Bhutto was not a socialist. He was a racist. Another disaster to the civil service came when Zia-ul-Haq started appointing ex-military officers to the civil service, making them eligible for it. After that, Nawaz Sharif and PPP administrations then started putting their own party loyalists into the civil service. This is why Pakistan is a disaster. The government is run by bureaucrats who are not qualified.
