One of the modern Dalek operators was waiting in the dark and the rain at a bus stop after the last day's filming of the third season finale. A car pulled up beside him. It was Liz Sladen, she gave him a lift and had saved some food from the buffet for him saying that she remembered from the seventies that Dalek operators always got forgotten.

The original daleks were made of hardboard and kept in a garage rented by the BBC in the 60s. There were 4 of them and when they were needed they were picked up by a van and taken to the studios and unloaded by hand.

I got to ride around in a real dalek back in the 80's, I was a kid. There was no motors in it. You had to lean and shuffle to make things work. I didn't have the strength to move it effectively but damned if it didn't finally cure my fear of daleks. Mind you - while attending some kind of Dr Who convention in Hyde Park in the UK when I heard the daleks voices over the loud speaker I caused a child stampede. I couldn't figure out why the adults were stupidly lining up to feed us to daleks, I was out of there like a shot and all the kids began crying and bolting too. You ain't tricking me into being dalek food!

I remember going to see a travelling BBC exhibition when I was a kid in the sixty's. They had always scared the crap out of me up to then, but after seeing them, that fear was somewhat reduced. I noticed that they were on what looked like furniture castors and the lights on the top had "Lucas" on them indicating that they may once have been "Morris Minor" side lights. Kinda realised then that they probably weren't cut out for intergalactic domination.

Those are some seriously cool Daleks. My first memory of television was an episode of Destiny of the Daleks (and I'm of the age when it was most likely the original transmission on BBC1), where the Doctor & co are holed up with the lifeless Davros, and the Daleks are attempting to break in to steal him back. Cut to close-up of Davros' dead, mummified hand twitch as he slowly comes back to life - and none of our heroes have noticed... CUE THEME TUNE INTRO SCREAM!

A bloke I worked with in the eighties used his life savings to buy one. He was six feet tall and about twenty stone. He got in the Dalek as soon as it was delivered and got stuck.

Great work! If you're interested, going by promotional photos from "Daleks In Manhattan, the outer layer of black mesh that's used inside the cowling in the modern (post 2005) series of Doctor Who is definitely either Flexi Rib matting or Heron Air matting. I haven't worked out what the inner layer is made from, yet.

I don't like modern Daleks but I do like the all grey one's from about 1976. Back in the 80's i had a magazine about how to build one, dimensions of the wood, grp mould for the head, assembly...it was a proper technical manual.

Daleks made from the 10th anniversary magazine information tend not to be fully accurate, a little tall and thin, with detail problems like the uprights on the neck mesh. There are freely available high-quality plans, and even parts that can be found on the internet. There do not appear to be any 'standard production' Daleks anywhere, though.

Well, half the fun if building a Dalek is so you can get inside and play ( Technically referred to as "Trundleing"). I'm 6 feet high and not exactly slim but I'm able to get inside my Dalek just fine. Back in the day when I was charity fundraising with it, I was able to stay inside in "Dalek mode" for 2-3 hours no problem. The time flies by when your a Dalek.

The first 'Dalek operators' were all small, strong slim guys who were also dancers, and got credit for developing a style of movement, and a 'wiggle' when speaking that helped the action, and adding handles on the inside of the 'skirt' so they could whip 'em around on the spot if needed. While the voices were usually done by off-screen actors, some Dalek operators also 'voiced' their own Dalek.

As a Brit who grew up with the Daleks in the 1970s, I’m fascinated that other countries might find them fascinating. I just assumed they were an entirely British thing. Daleks used to scare the bejesus out of me in the 1970s, but even then I realised that they were cheaply-made low-budget mock-ups (I’m sure black and white TV hid the defects). I must have known they were just film props because one episode of Dr Who was shot where my Dad used to work when I was about 8 (a nuclear research facility with lots of gangways and places to have a good chase, so I KNEW it wasn’t real, but still it used to scare the living crap out of me on Saturday evening). But, why, oh why, do other cultures find them interesting/scary? BTW, Jon Pertwee was the best, but those from Christopher Eccleston onwards were pretty good.

I was a kid when the revival started and I think I was scared of them in the first season because they killed so much. Made for an eerie sense of "What'd happen to me if I were in that situation?" kind of vibe. Afterwards I think they became too familiar.

The dalek voice, the black and white negative camera shot when the dalek gun was fired, the scary moving design on the title screen, and the absolutely fantastic electronic theme tune (unlike anything else at the time) all combined to quietly terrorise me as a boy. Apparently, I'd hide behind the settee when the daleks made an appearance. Marvellous.
