Considering the BBC's budget at the time of destiny of the daleks, that homemade film was quite accurate!

I spent weeks building one of these kits around 1986, a lot of sanding, painting and hard work but it was a thrill to own a decent model Dalek at a time when they were scarce..sadly the model is now long gone.

In the modern world of 3D Printing, making Dalek models would be no sweat. But that's what makes their skills on display here much more rewarding, considering what they had to work with. It really does boil down to talent, dedication, appreciation for Craftsmanship, and fine patience to make it far in this life. Regardless of whatever times one would live in. I am now gonna try and make one of these myself.

I think these look pretty good. Better than some of the effects in older stories. If they could have used this technique in stories like Day of the Daleks where they only had three of them. It would have made the battle at the end a lot more interesting.

What's incredible is Considering it was the BBC no one had the bright idea hey let's build a stack load of models, film them close to camera and Actors further back so they appear same size and whoila. Or hey let's build a load of scale models and a fake background matching shot and whoila. No instead they were more interested in what was the special in the canteen at lunch.. Fops.as they always been.. Now If it had been a itv production.....

@@solcutta3661 I have no idea why they didn't do that in Day of The Daleks. Power, Evil and Planet of the Daleks did those things, and they turned out pretty decent to great.

Doctor Who and Blue Peter have been associated for many years, ever since the Hartnell years. Even during the hiatus years (1996-2005) Blue Peter would often run Doctor Who related segments.

I built one of his Dalek kits in the late 80s and still have it. From what I remember they were quite expensive at the time.
@GrilloTheFlightless

The Stuart Evans Dalek kits were a nightmare to build. You had to trim the pieces to get the right size and you had to cut your own mitres on the skirt sections to get them to fit. After a lot of hard work, cutting, sanding and Milliput the result wasn’t too bad, except that some of the panels had warped and just didn’t want to stick down! Those kits weren’t for the faint hearted, that’s for sure, but they taught me a lot of modelling skills that have never left me. The Stuart Evans cyber man looked good too, and I still have it - except the head solid was resin and the body hollow polystyrene so the head had come off under its own weight a few times through the years. The Stuart Evans TARDIS was good but cost a ridiculous amount of money, especially since I had to amend and re-make a number of parts because they came off the moulds so badly and couldn’t be used!
@Stansman63
@Stansman63 2 жыл бұрын
Yep, it was a big operation for me, first I had to order it and get it sent to Australia from the UK which wasn't as easy in those pre-internet days, then the complicated building job which was really a little beyond my model building skills..the result was ok but a little rough in places..still it got me a fairly reasonable dalek model years before they became common.

They were vacuform kits, right? What about the kits from Comet Miniatures, or Sevans? Also that Aifix gift set?
@GrilloTheFlightless
@GrilloTheFlightless Жыл бұрын
@@MrPolicekarim Yes, they were vacuform. That Sevans Cyberman was as well, although the head was a solid lump of resin which weighed more than the entire hollow body altogether. This meant I had to fill the boots with pennies before gluing them on in for the damned thing to stand up. The two halves of the body didn’t quite line up either so I had to do quite a bit of putty-filling to hide the join. Comet Miniatures Dalek was an absolute joy to build. It was an easier build and not as challenging, but it was an injection moulded kit, so it wasn’t nearly as brittle and easy to break as the Sevans Dalek, and the parts fitted together much more easily. It was quite a bit shorter though. Comet also did an excellent Liberator from Blake’s 7 and a tripod war machine from War Of The Worlds. My Sevans Dalek ended up getting badly damaged because the plastic was so thin and brittle and only lasted about 5 years. My Comet Dalek lasted nearly 20 years and only broke because I went and had kids and they were vandals when they were little. I still have my Sevans Cyberman. The head has come off a few times because the weight of it is too heavy for the glue and it needs some touch-ups on some paint chips, but otherwise still looks good after all these years.
@MrPolicekarim
@MrPolicekarim Жыл бұрын
@@GrilloTheFlightless Were the Comet kits made with aluminium moulds, or proper steel moulds. If so., new models could be made! In 2003, there was a company that did 1/35 resin and metal daleks. But in 2003, the BBC started buying back all the licences, to get them all under 1 roof.
@GrilloTheFlightless
@GrilloTheFlightless Жыл бұрын
@@MrPolicekarim To be honest I don’t know what the moulds were made from. It’s a shame that all the licences were reeled back in in some respects. On one hand it prevents god-awful products like the Dapol range being produced, but on the other hand there’s now a big gap for things like model kits which really appeal to a lot of people.

I remember seeing this clip when first broadcast and being mightily impressed at the time. Although for a wee while I thought the Daleks were that size in the show and that camera tricks were used to make them seem bigger. Thanks for posting, I kept on meaning to search for the clip but never got round to it.

This man handled the 'Glove puppet' comment well. 🤖🤣😂 Whilst yes it is like a glove-puppet, I have seen people explode at the first mention of the 'P' word! Aparrently Gerry Anderson was one of them. But adding the word Glove is really passive aggressive Mr Duncan! (Humour) 😉
