I can recommend The Last Act of Love by Cathy Rentzenbrink, it's completely heartbreaking about her brother who was in a coma after a car accident and his death when the family decided to let him go, as well as their grief afterwards. It's not only about death but a lot about grief, but I can't recommend it enough! Beautifully written and heartwrenching! Also The Trauma Cleaner by Sarah Krasnostein, which is similarly not only about death but equally beautifully written, it's about a woman who works in extreme specialist cleaning, like crime scenes, hoarders houses and houses with undiscovered decaying bodies.

Your video has made me realise that books about death also interest me. I have read All that Remains and When Breath Becomes Air. Unnatural Causes has also been on my to-buy-tbr for years. I've not heard of Caitlin Doughty before, so I will check out her YT as the books you mentioned sound great! The concept of this video was great 😄

this is so so helpful! since the pandemic, I have noticed myself having increased anxiety surrounding the topic of death. I've wanted to read more books about it to see if that would help, but wanted to avoid overly spiritual/religious takes as that particularly doesn't suit my beliefs. these recommendations could not have come at a better time!!

That thumbnail though! 🖤 And sensitive aesthetic. Thanks for a much needed discussion, Alice, and solid recommendations. I've read Prof Black, she's really good at combining the dark with compassion and humour. We're officially in National Mourning here, it's very noticeable that amid all reflections and reminiscing, there's zero discussion of death. I don't think that's out of respect, it's just not a thing. 🍁🍂

What you said about death in the beginning of the video is exactly what started my interest in the topic and whenever life gets frantic, i watch Six Feet Under and life is somewhat bearable again. Will my cats eat my eyeballs was the first recommendation i read from you and a whole new path opened up for me. Now not only I watch stuff about death, but also read about it as well. Fiction that deals with death does also help i think. Thank you for the video and i loved the vibes that your sweater is serving in favour of the video :D

I recommend "Stiff: The Curious Lives of Human Cadavers" by: Mary Roach. It was really interesting.

I am one of those who very much appreciate suggestions on this topic! I'm very pationate about it and always gravitate towards random books I find in bookstores that have the word "death" in it, because it's not easy to find good recomendations on the topic, and I end up resorting to luck and intuition. In one of those musings, I did find a great book! It's called "Essais sur l'histoire de la mort en Occident", by Phillipe Ariès. I haven't managed to find its name in english, but I'm sure you can find it, or at least one of his other books, since he did write quite a bit about death (it's not even his most famous book on death!). I hope you may find it a good suggestion! Keep up the good work and thank you, as always, for your suggestions!

This was an interesting video and I got a few new book recommendations from it, thank you! I am really interested in forensic and autopsy things and everything related to those but I don't really read books about these topics that often. Maybe I need to fix that!

“Working stiff” by Judy Melinek MD was a great book. I can’t recommend it enough. She is training to be a medical examiner, and writes about her 2 year journey working at a New York City forensic pathologists office. It’s fascinating, and very in-depth. Worth the read!

It's so funny because while I like books about death, it's because I'm very curious about the experiences surrounding death, but death itself doesn't scare me. I have very low death anxiety, and I'm not very scared of it, but that's because I grew up with a mom that also has low death anxiety and we often talk about different aspects of death. I'm not sure why that happens!

'This party's dead' by Erica Buist is also a great one if you liked 'from here to eternity' 😊

Hello Alice ! Thank you very much for these recommandations. You are so right, we cannot apreciate life if we don't think about death. I will these books absolutely. There is a book that what life changing for me. Have you read "Top Five Regrets of the Dying by Bronnie Ware "? You make different decisions after that.

This is probably considered spiritual but I really loved the Tibetan Book of Living and Dying. Very interesting way of looking at death and the process of dying differently than we do in the West

You should check out a new book that just came out in the US in August! I’m currently reading it and it’s excellent. It’s called “All The Living And The Dead: From Embalmers to Executioners, an Exploration of the People Who Have Made Death Their Life’s Work” by Hayley Campbell. Thank you for your recommendations!

Great list! I've read many of these but need to check out Sue Black's works. Being Mortal by Atul Gawande is a tough read but offers very insightful and important information on illness and dying.
