I have to say it was an insane ride of me being obsessed with your green dye and daily walk/vlog content to having readathons just because you mentioned it once and then you making a matching tattoo video with your mother(absolutely adorable tattoo btw) and then completely vanishing off tiktok and then me losing you for like a year and then you casually appearing in my insta feed to finding you make book recommendations on youtube now AND finding out we have similar tastes... You were my social media hyperfixation for a good year and im so glad to see you making content again and especially a content i also already love lol

I love her too! No one does magical realism like South america. I don't know if it's because it was born there or what. But all of my favorites surrealist magical realest books have been written by South American authors.

about the mariana enriquez book, i figured something out: i looked into both the english translation and the original and the word they translate to the slur is the word "travesti" which is NOT a slur in spanish or brazilian portuguese but a specific latino transfemme identity that is found all throughout our countries. maybe the translator read it as a slur because it used to be used in a very derogatory way but it is actually a reclaimed identity and the travestis i know usually prefer to be referred to as travestis rather than trans women, given that most of them argue those are not the same identity. it's disappointing it was translated this way and i think it kind of shows lack of proper research on the term from the translator sorry for the long comment, but i saw you mentioned this in two videos and it bothered me enough to look it up bc i knew there wasn't any slurs in them and that mariana enriquez wouldn't use such terms lightly and for no reason

THANK YOU this is such a relief to hear because it really did stand out to me!! sounds like it was definitely an uninformed choice by the translator

14:20 You nailed it. Accessibility is a huge part of why some books are so popular (as well as people like what is familiar to them, and I confess to be guilty of that too). I have avoided Big Swiss not because it's popular but because that cover gives me anxiety, lol.

Hi! I'm from Argentina and I love Mariana Enriquez. I've read her in the original versions, and I don't remember transphobic slurs. Maybe it's a thing with the translation? Or maybe a cultural difference? Because we have words that are not necessarily considered slurs within the queer communities, because they were actually taken back from the hate discourses to own them in a positive way. I might be wrong and not remember them, but I just wanted to leave a small possibility open that it's just a misunderstanding or just a very deep character flaw for the purpose of the short story. And now that I'm here, I'd like to recommend the book Bad Girls by Camila Sosa Villada, a coming of age story of a trans-woman in Argentina. The author is trans and the book it's so beautiful and raw. Thank you for the video!

Melissa Border would definitely be my number one pick for this category. Reading Milk Fed by her was such an experience and I've become very interested in finding similar books since. I also read The Pisces by her and again, it was so refreshing. Just like you said at the end of the video, the female main characters in her books can be messy and unlikable and gross, but it's fun to read about for a change

I also recommend Siren Queen by Nghi Vo. It's about old Hollywood but magical realism and about being part of a marginalized group because of your identity. Definitely horror undertones. But absolutely FANTASTIC! I LOVED this book. Highly recommend!

I’ve read and recommended One’s Company, Ripe, Pizza Girl, and Big Swiss as well!!! Was so excited to see that cover in the thumbnail. One’s company is soooooo freaking underrated. Also I TOTALLY agree that Ripe is deeply shallow when it comes to class. I feel like you might really enjoy the divines by Ellie Eaton which is also about the grossness of girlhood and weirdness of memory. Death in Her Heads is Moshfegh’s weakest book for sure, and she (and her characters) def project a cruel, toxic eating disorder mindset onto the whole world. I feel like you might enjoy Melissa Broder and Michelle Tea as writers, based on this list. Shmutz by Felicia Berliner is a super underrated one too. Also Post-traumatic by Chantal V Johnson and Exalted by Anna Dorn. So glad we share similar taste!! I love weird women novelsssss

I do think that Death in her Hands is my least favourite Ottessa Moshfegh, so if you were to pick up another I think you'd have a better, more interesting experience. I think I read somewhere she wrote the book, shelved it and then came back to it later. Not a bad thing necessarily but I don't think it contains that feverish urgent quality of her other books. I wonder if her being able to shelve it isn't a coincidence. Idk. Also, I totally agree with you on the fatphobia. It feels fair to share that she has responded to this criticism to say she has a history with EDs and it's a subject she can't seem to not write about. I'm not sure how I feel about that but thought I'd share. It's not the only questionable thing she's said but I won't go into that here! Only came across your videos today and am really enjoying them.
@frankiesshelf3 ай бұрын
do you have a recommendation if i were to try another one of her books? idk if i’d like lapvona just cause of the setting but i’m not sure which of her other works i would like better that DEFINITELY makes sense that she’s struggled with an ED ! i think i just want her to handle those themes with a little more grace and decorum lol. i’ve just recently read melissa broder’s milkfed which had a protagonist with an eating disorder that was handled SO WELL and i’d like to see something more like that from moshfegh

i saw someone say that the problem with otessa moshfegh's fatphobia isn't that she writes all of her characters to hate fat people, but that their hatred is boringly written, and that's my favorite thing ever bc its honestly so true. like, if they were more creative with their fatphobia, it'd be something i maybe could look past (i'm saying this as a fat person lmao)
