The God of Small Things is really beautiful. Made me cry a lot. I'm a huge fan of Roy, who is also well known for her socio-political speeches. I hope you love it :)

This video is a breath of a fresh air on booktube because well, majority of booktubers are from North America or the UK and they usually just stick with literature from English speaking authors...as a person from not an English speaking country (and a fellow Slav;)), I think it's a shame because I know we have some interesting cool authors and books in my country they will never ever read...and so it has inspired me to start reading books from every country in the world...I also discovered the British lady who did so before and her list of what she did read is very helpful.

I know of that lady! I watched her Ted talk a long time ago. I also was very inspired by her and started looking for more diverse books after I watched that video 🌟

I haven't read much Iranian literature other than the Persepolis graphic novels, and I still want to read The Blind Owl, but some of these other books you mentioned also sound really interesting. I read The invention of Morel many years ago, I remember liking it, it's a well known book. Some of my favorite Argentinian writers are Julio Cortazar and Manuel Puig.
@bookishtopics4 жыл бұрын
I've already ordered Julio Cortazar's book which contains two of his novels Hopscotch and one more, I forgot the name at the moment. So I'm excited to read him for the first time 😍 and I've never heard of Manuel Puig before so thank you for recommending him! 🌞 I'll definitely check him out 🌟

The Invention of Morel is one I will have to try. I am not familiar with the author, but I have read many short stories by Jorge Luis Borges (in Ficciones, Labyrinths, The Book of Sand, and Doctor Brodie’s Report). I have also been pleased with the NYRB Classics series, having recently reread their edition of The Big Clock by Kenneth Fearing.
@bookishtopics4 жыл бұрын
NYRB Classics series has so many interesting titles. I don't have a lot of books in this editions, but just from what I see on Book Depository. So many interesting books. I want Ivo Andric's books in this edition and Three Summers by Margarita Liberaki. Those are my priorities for now, but there are so many more interesting books in this series. :)

Hi from India! You could read some of our mythology if you like those sorts of stories - The palace and enchantments by Chitra Devakurni and Jaya by Devdutt Pattnaik are great. If you are interested in history, then the Emperors of the Mughals series by Alex Rutherford is amazing. Ghachar Ghochar is a great family drama and a short read!

Thank you so much for the recommendations! I'll definitely get to them. I never knew where to start with Indian literature so it's very helpful 😍🌟

I suggested mythology as well! 😄 Clearly, that is a great place to start with Indian literature. And yeah, Chitra Banerjee, Devdutt Pattnaik, Kavita Kane, Amish... all of them are great for mythological retellings. 🤩

I've been meaning to get The wizard and the Crow by Ngugi Wa Thiong'o. But now I'm curious about the ones you mentioned as well. He sounds like such a good author doesn't he! I'm doing a project in which I am reading books from different countries (reading the world in 80 books). So got a few recommendations from your video. I try not to look to far in advance for some countries because it takes a while before I can get to them sometimes.. I've heard good things from 'the mountains sing' as well!
@bookishtopics4 жыл бұрын
Oh this is such a great project! 🌟 Books from which countries have you already read? And good luck! I think it's great to try and read books from different cultures 😍 Ngugi Wa Thiongo does sound really great. I read somewhere that he was nominated for the Nobel Prize in literature. He still hasn't won it yet, but hopefully one day he will 🌞

Hey, I have read The God of Small things, and yes, even I keep recommending it to everyone !! It is an amazing book. And it follows two twins, a boy and a girl (not two sisters). I have to tell, it will be slow and unrelated to its central theme from the beginning... but when you finish it, things will come together beautifully. Also, it plays around with timelines a lot. It's like, past-present-past. 😊 You should read it... it is a great read. Writing style is very different. And may I suggest, try Indian mythological retellings by Devdutt Pattanaik. They are my favorite of indian literature! 😍

The God of Small Things sounds great and also other people in the comments mentioned that the writing is very beautiful so I'm really excited to get to it at some point. I 100% will. And thank you for the mythology retelling recommendation! I love mythology so this book goes directly to my tbr :)

God of small things is about this twins and how a single incident on a day reshapes the life of the twins and their mother and everyone around them. Hopefully you'll like your picks 😄

@@bookishtopics I have to say it's a different experience for me as it will be for you. This happens when we read about societal evils happening in our own country vs foreign country, so the depth of emotions will be different. But yes, it's fantastic piece of literature

I just discovered your channel! You have some great recommendations here, many I'd never heard of before. The Yacoubian Building sounds particularly interesting to me. I read The God of Small Things a couple of months ago and didn't care for it, but it seems like a "love it or hate it" book for people, so hopefully you will enjoy it more than I did. If you are interested in other Indian writers, Aravind Adiga's The White Tiger and his newest book Amnesty are both quite good. The White Tiger won the Man Booker Prize in 2008.

The God of Small Things is also on my TBR! I’m trying to grow my international bookshelf as well; I’m getting a little tired of only reading white American authors lol. Here are some others on my list which you may find interesting: Erotic Stories for Punjabi Widows; The Unlikely Adventures of the Shergill Sisters by Balli Kaur Jaswal (author is Indian-Singaporean, I believe) The Far Field by Madhuri Vijay (author is Indian) Freshwater by Akwaeke Emezi (author is Nigerian) The House of Blue Mangoes by David Davidar (author is Indian) Marriage of a Thousand Lies by S.J. Sindu (author is Sri Lankan)

Thank you so much for sharing the books on your radar 🌟 I'll look into them for sure! I need to grow my collection of Indian books and I have not a single novel by an author from Sri Lanka. And I've never heard of Akwaeke Emezi so these are really interesting! 😍📚
