Hi Jack :) Have you heard about 'The Dictionary of Lost Words'? It is written by Pip Williams. This book is about a girl whose dad worked at the first publication of the Oxford English Dictionary. The girl starts collecting words by herself which are not wanted in the original dictionary because they are related to women, poor people or for other reasons. It is her story but also related to these kind of words. One of my favorite books I've read in the last months :) Sorry for any grammar mistakes 🙈 Lots of love from Germany💫

I would be interested in wheter or not the perception of a book changes when you get to know the author. I would imagine reading books of people that you meet and liked are likely to be observed as being better writen. What do you think?
@bobthebuilderday6leader2 жыл бұрын
I think it’s the same as knowing that someone is related to your close friend before you interview them? Probably some subconscious bias, but if the book sucks it sucks. You’d wish it didn’t, I guess.

"What is the relationship of the famous author to their famous books anyway? If I had bad manners and was personally unpleasant and spoke with an irritating accent, which in my opinion is probably the case, would it have anything to do with my novels? Of course not. The work would be the same, no different. And what do the books gain by being attached to me, my face, my mannerisms, in all their demoralising specificity? Nothing." -Sally Rooney, Beautiful World, Where Are You
@jkmacrunnel2 жыл бұрын
A lot of times I read the book before I meet the author, so I have something to talk about with them. Its so much better to talk to them when you've actually read their books. And sometimes I will love a book even more afterwards, if the author is a sweet and lovely person (most of them I've met are). That's always so nice!

Can't wait for your review of the Penguin book! And I have a video idea: Different translations of titles. Because I thinks it's really interest how different book titles are translated. Take for example the Penguin book: The Russian original title translates to "Death of an outsider", but there seems to be a "Death and the Penguin" Russian version as well.The German version translates to "Picknick on the ice". And if you look at other international versions, both titles seem to exist at equal amounts.
@piretbaumann25742 жыл бұрын
Note from a translator: I don't want to be on the cover. In fact, I wish to translate in a way that feels so fluid and authentic that you don't think of me and my meddling with the original work at all. (Having said that - I'm grateful for your appreciation :))

Hello! I’m a big fan of your KZbin videos and I just had a quick suggestion! So I saw that you had been sent all the books on the women’s prize long list and also the short list was just recently released. So I was wondering if could make a video where you read the books on the short list, share your thoughts, and then predict the winner? I absolutely love “The Book of Form And Emptiness” a book that is on the short list, and I would love for you to share your thoughts on it! Besides just that book however I feel like it’s important to uplift female authors because they are so often buried and considering the current climate in the US with women’s rights, I was thinking that a video highlighting women’s perspective could be a source of light for many young women such as myself. This could also bring some hope to some of the girls in my high school who hope to become writers one day (including possibly myself) as that hope seems to grow dimmer with the current US politics. Sorry for the very long comment and it’s probably weird that a 15 year old girl reached out to you randomly however I love your channel and hope that you can read these incredible books that have been shortlisted for the women’s prize. Thank you for reading these long dm’s and I hope you have a wonderful rest of your week! Thank you again!

It’s so cute to see Jack wrapping his head around Love Marriage. Also, the opposite of Arranged Marriage is not Love Marriage (they’re 2 sides of the same coin), it’s either a Court Marriage or an Ambedkarite Wedding in the Indian context.
@nia95312 жыл бұрын
Love marriage and arranged marriage are literally opposites!
@vrindam12472 жыл бұрын
I would disagree, arranged marriage and love marriage are opposites. A court "marriage" is the opposite of a traditional wedding. You can have an arranged court marriage too.
@whydoineedanameiwillneverp77902 жыл бұрын
I mean heads and tails are quite literally opposites too, lol. I agree arranged marriages and love marriages are two sides of the same coin - the coin being *marriage*. Court marriage vs religious marriage are two sides of an entirely different coin - the coin being what constitutes a wedding ceremony. I assume you mean the opposite of arranged marriages would be marrying without one's family's approval. But marrying without your family's approval doesn't necessarily end in a court marriage - there's one very famous Bengali marriage from the early 1900s where the bride gave herself away (in a Brahmo wedding ceremony), because her family of birth didn't consent to the marriage. And funnily enough, arranged marriages aren't always formalized with family approval - I've seen one case where the families arranged the match, then fell out over something and withdrew their consent, but the bride and groom decided to marry each other anyway.
