What got me with Fourth Wing was a) how much the author mentioned how teeny tiny petite and fragile Violet was, but also wanted us to believe that she was this epic fighting champion warrior capable of getting beat up multiple times. Like are we really suppose to believe the girl that study to be a scribe her entire life can survive all this major military style combat and challenges with no time to heal? b) how Xaden is remotely attracted to Violet even though her mom is responsible for killing off this family??? It would have worked, but he hated her for all of 5 seconds & then was ready to do the deed. I feel like this book series (and the movie if they make it) is giving Divergent by Veronica Roth

I finished the book and I thought it was ok. I just wish that there wasn't that whole she was so small but fiery and mean but venerable at times trope. And Nate was just too perfect with the way that he just thought that this girl that was so mean to him was so alluring. I wish there would have been more of a they didn't really care for each other and tensions boiled over for each other. I get that its romance and unrealistic but the constant back and forth they did was really annoying but that's just my opinion.

I dont really read novels and stick to manga, but my first book experience in years was Fourth Wing And to no surprise, I didn't finish it. I'm not a romance guy, but I tried to slightly seperate the fantasy from the romance but I just can't do it sooo here's some critiques The fantasy itself is warped around the romance. The rules of the world basically tells you who is going to be with who in perpetuity for the rest of the series. Even by way of how characters are described you know EXACTLY who Violet is attracted to and who she's most likely to be with because she's constantly mentally catcalling her boyfriend. The actual story and fantasy sucks balls. Death college is a thing I can't get behind because they'll almost always surpass either by mass murder or the power of friendship. This broke the mold for me by adding a third option, Xaden is a bodyguard paid by the allusion of sex. Besides that, the abilities either contradict or are unclear. The bond between dragon and rider is unique, yet its later explained or at least theorized that Violet's powerset is hereditary. The unique power line is also contradicted by the fact that Violet has two dragons with different powers, which implies the second power belongs to the Dragon, which is ALSO contradicted with all baby dragons being wildcards. The world is flat, like mentally in my mind I imagined a flat plane of rocks and grass that's solely there for people to fight and argue. There's nothing interesting to it, the fact that I need a map to at least visualize the world is really bad in my opinion but to some its not the end of the world, but wards. The lesser powers are also VERY convenient as there is absolutely no reason why you need them. Lesser magics based on dragons should be something like enhanced strength, telekinesis, maybe fire breathing if you want to go crazy. We dont know why they're even like this, but dragons seemingly find lock picking and penmanship too appealing to question. I've also been told that I'm taking this too seriously, I have such a big problem with this. I read a manga where the MC is paralyzed from the legs down and I genuinely feel like he can fare better in this universe solely because the author isn't determined to have him depend on another person. Even comparing the two on the barebones settings, horse race with ghost super powers vs dragon school? Horse race, every day. Now for the shameless plug, read JoJo's Bizarre Adventure. Its genuinely great to me, just know that the early parts lack due to the author only being in the business for a few years. If you're interested, you can read Steel Ball Run and onward without reading the other parts as its considered almost a different continuity to some extent. Just know to check some triggers as things get HEEEEEAVY later on

loved the video! I read fourth wing and hated it too-I'm all for a 'turn off your brain' type of read when it's done convincingly... emphasis on 'convincingly' because fourth wing was anything but that. re: a seditious affair by kj charles, the book actually worked out for me because after reading many of kj charles' books I understand her political stances (which I ofc agree with) so I approached the romance differently. the love interest to me was more like someone who isn't opposing oppressed people's rights but rather is a product of the system he's a part of (and thus inadvertently perpetuates it bc of his privilege) and his privileged position makes him fail to understand the true devastation that the tories are causing. that doesn't make it okay (it's really not okay) and I didn't feel like kj charles tried to sanitize him, which I liked. his political stances are not likeable, so seeing him grow in this historical climate where I understand why a person like him would be convinced to think the way he does was interesting to me. given his environment, I think having him also adopt leftist ideas very easily would have made me dislike the book because it wouldn't be believable characterization for a privileged person in regency england, if that makes sense. BUT with my opinions being said, I still think you should stick to the dnf mina, so many great books to read so you might as well pick up something you enjoy from the get go! much love 🖤
@MinaReads8 ай бұрын
thank you for sharing more about your experiences with a seditious affair! i really appreciated reading your perspective and i actually agree that it would have cheapened the book in alot of ways if the more privileged dude just suddenly changed to leftist politics solely by association. I think for me it was ultimately not the type of set up i enjoy for a romance narrative, but i don't begrudge kj charles for writing it that way I think I just wasn't quite the right reader for this particular book. it happens sometimes, and I definitely will be reading more kj charles in the future!

The relationships between the couples in each of these books weren't built up very well, the author wasn't plotting the books out so things just happen sometimes and the dialogue was so awkward and not written well at all. I recently read Only on the Weekends by Dean Atta and I think the love angel (cause I feel like triangles mean that all 3 people need to be interested in each other, which I have read and is incredibly hot) was done pretty well. I didn't know for sure who the MC would choose until he actually did.

I get your thoughts on a seditious affair, my interpretation was that Dominic (the lawman) hadn’t rlly given his political beliefs much thought beyond what he felt he was supposed to believe. It seems like his beliefs were based more on conformity than anything considering Silas put himself in a lot of danger for supporting things that were really radical at the time. Their dynamic reminded me a lot of Guy and Phillip in band sinister. Aside from the politics, it definitely could’ve been more romantic too so it was like a 3 star for me.

There was a love triangle that made me so mad in a YA series. Basically the whole second book was build up between the FMC and the secondary love interest and then they started book 3 by having the first love interest return and the FMC was like nothing in the second book was real, I was just lonely and they just... left it at that? Why did I have to read a whole book of her developing feelings?

the last book i dnf'd was a song of wraiths and ruin, the primary reason being it was fantasy and it felt taxing to keep up the world building and magic systems + the characters were kind of annoying in a bad way imo

Fantasy can be so draining sometimes I feel that!!

i recently DNFd No Good Deed by Emma Cole...literally SO MUCH s*xual violence on page. it felt like the author didn't know how else to propel the story along without using that as a plot point. it was horrible like omg

There was a period of time when I was younger where all I read was YA. Now I can’t imagine reading another one, primarily because so many of them contain love triangles! They are the worst

I totally feel you, I'm a quitter as well. If I'm not enjoying a book, a song, a series, a movie, etc... I just leave it and go for something else. I feel there's too much quality content out there for me to waste my attention span with something I don't like.

I wish i could of DNF the 1st book of the ravenhood series(i couldnt cause it was for book club) Truly the worst book i ever read. Some ppl should not considered themselves a writer. I was getting second hand embarrassment from reading the story.

I agree with Emily Henry. I’m reading People We Meet now and am liking it but have not liked any of her other books. I want to check out the new one but I don’t want to waste my time

The only love triangle that makes sense and had broken my heart are the infernal devices... You loved both men... It was heart breaking

I swear Love Triangles are one of my least favorite tropes [that isn’t problematic]. Either the side guy is 100% more interesting and kinder than the main (who is a grouchy, abusive arsehole)… or about as bland as wonderbread. Or both men suck. Eitherway, love triangles needs to stop. Just say no to them, or take the poly route.

I DNFed The Southern Book Club's Guide to Slaying Vampires by Grady Hendrix back in February. It wasn't even that it was bad - I loved the writing! I was into the story! But by the time I stopped reading, maybe a chapter or two after the big time skip that happens 2/3rds of the way through, my second-hand embarrassment was getting set off so hard by all the times the protagonist got humiliated in front of everyone she knew that I couldn't make myself go on. (Plus by that point I'd stopped caring about what happened with the vampire and just really, really, REALLY wanted the protagonist's husband to die a horrible, painful, humiliating death. Absolute garbage character, throw the entire man away.) I do eventually want to go back and finish it, and I have two more Grady Hendrix books on my TBR, but right now I can't make myself read even one more page. Honestly I might check out Halfling? That sounds right up my alley, and if I managed to make it through Outlander I think I can handle this one. Love your takes - you've definitely cemented my decision to not read Fourth Wing.

The only situation, when I like love triangles, is when something is seriously off about one of LIs, but everyone just doesn't seem to notice it. And in the end (bonus point, if MC already chose them) other characters realise that this person is actually unhinged, manipulative psycho, who doesn't even deserve some redemption arc. They're just evil. Period.

My last dnf was Tate James' "The Guild series". Don't remember which book out of three, but I audiobooked it and it was just a combination of one of the love interests being a real creep and the guy narrating him sounding way too convincing. The scene where he *ekhem* inserts a gun into her hooha AND she wants and enjoys it, was what broke me. Once you hear that, it's done. Over. No going back.
