I read the Foxhole Court books in 48 hours like 2 years ago. Earlier this summer, me and my mom were on a long road trip and we ended up on the highway in South Carolina. When I drove past an exit sign for Columbia, I was suddenly transported back to the fever dream that was reading them, and proceeded to spend the next 2 hours telling my increasingly more horrified mother every single detail I could remember. So yeah, absolutely there is something terrifyingly powerful about them that changes you somehow. But in a completely unhinged way, like you've maybe been possessed by a demon

Leonie!! I would love to see a video of "romances that we love to ship for the compelling connection and not the hotness" recommendations. I too am tired of the "I'm into them because...they're hot" romances in fantasy lately, and it stands out even more when you read a book that is the opposite, where the characters have emotional tension and then find common ground and it's not all about the hotness. (Just finished A Winter's Promise and I ship it so hard.) I also agree COMPLETELY about Left Hand. What an interesting concept for such a boring book. It was hardly even a story, just a prop for essays about the subject. I was disappointed at the end that she shied away from the guys hooking up on the mountain hike with the bodyheat trope. I guess that might have been too shocking for the time period, but it would have given the travel part something interesting :P

Six of Crows is totally the benchmark. Every single ship in there but especially Kanej 😍 It's so hard to find ones that satisfy. I think the cozier fantasies published more recently (Half a Soul, Very Secret Society, Nettle & Bone) have been my favorites in the romance department lately.

"the foxhole court brainwashes you" is the most accurate description ever because i read the books years ago. i was obsessed with it. over the years though, i became more and more critical of it, until i eventually stopped thinking about it altogether. however, once i watched your 2-hour video thinking it would just be a fun little trip down memory lane, it was like something inside me became unlocked. suddenly i couldn't stop thinking about it. i felt the intense urge to reread the books. that night i had a freaking dream that i was IN the books. that's how much the series has a grip on you.

The Left Hand of Darkness is one of my favourite books of all time…but the first time I tried to read it I stopped after a hundred pages because I was so bored. It really is very slow and less plot-focused (sort of the style of the time I suppose) but I’ve come back to it again and again after the first time I forced myself through it because for me at least, it’s the kind of book that just grows in my mind the more time I’ve spent after reading it.

You explained the problem (imo) of fantasy romance and a lot of romance books in general very eloquently. I don't think I realized why I'm so picky about romances in my books until you compared self-insert (and therefore necessarily bland) characters with characters that have their own arcs and personalities and just have chemistry together.

GOOD OMENS IS SO AMAZING really takes over your brain and rewires everything inside lol im tempted to read the book as well (i also heard that the plot only talks about what was shown in s1 and that s2 was written by gaiman from scratch!!), this show is just so well done - the casting, the writing, the shots aaaaa everything is so incredible. Im also happy to hear that you read the left hand!! I tried reading it a few years ago but just like you said the start is very confusing and slow paced (and ngl the language was also difficult to get through for me) but i liked the concept nonetheless and i wanna come back to it one day!!

I think you'd really like T. Kingfisher's romance fantasy. She doesn't really do the enemies-to-lovers trope, but her characters are incredibly well-developed and there is a lot of angst and pining and bad-assery. Swordheart is a standalone if you feel like giving hers a try!

A fantasy romance that I come back to time and time again is the Captive Prince trilogy. The crown prince of one nation is given to the crown prince of the rival nation as a sex slave after suffering a coup, and the dynamic between the two princes is fascinating to read. The setup takes a long time to resolve and the author takes her time writing their evolving relationship, so the enemies to lovers angle actually makes sense. The second book pivots the setting into a military campaign, so the world setup of the first book is explored in lush detail. The books are absolutely quote unquote Problematic and very divisive, but the awful things the book contains actually have weight and are grappled with through the narrative. I'm a huge fan of the series, so I thought you might like it as well! It's definitely not for everyone tho lol

S1 is a decent adaptation. S2 is..... Not quite right in a lot of ways. PTerry isn't involved, (for the obvious reason) so you inevitably have the issue of Gaiman continuing the story on his own, without the input of the other (imo better) writer. So it just ends up feeling slightly off and not being as good as it should have been.

I really recommend the book! the characters are just slightly different in a way that's really interesting to compare, and personally maybe I even prefer them in the book. (there are some elements of it that, let's say, havent aged super well but the main story is still solid) as for neil's other books, if you didn't much like neverwhere I'm not sure you'll be into his solo stuff in general.

@@mariam19554 i agree! the first book of Terry's that I read other than GO was night watch, and while maybe it was not the most reasonable book to start the discworld with no context, I feel like it was a good entry for me, because of the more serious tone. and then I was already invested in the world so I could ease into the more goofy worldbuilding of other discworld books (even just going from night watch to guards! guards! was an adjustment hah)

I'm so same with Good Omens & needing more NOW. I've only read comics that Neil Gaiman contributes to & he's a great writer, but I personally prefer the adaptations of his work more than the source material. I'm also same page when it comes to romance - show me love, don't just tell. I'll suspend disbelief if it's clearly labeled instalove or just erotica, but if it's a longer story with romance as a primary plot then I want that romance. It can be romcom or fantasy, but I need to believe the characters are really together & meant to be. I feel like my grade school teacher demanding long form division on tests - I believe you that you got there, but I want to see your work.

If you (or anyone reading this) love Good Omens you’ll absolutely love Our Flag Means Death, it’s also a silly comedy with pirates who are really bad at piracy and a slow burn romance, lots of queer representation and just loads of fun all around

Curse of the Thorn King by Lisette Marshall just got published and in it has "the main character has to kill the king but ends up falling in love" trope mixed with a beauty and the beast retelling! It's not the most groundbreaking book, but I personally really enjoyed it. Marshall is one of my favourite authors

Recently I’ve been reading a lot of Chinese romance fantasy books. Really got sucked down a rabbit hole. Currently waiting for Heaven Official’s Blessing to finish releasing there last two novels. Also The Husky and his White Cat Shizun. Very funny and comes with a name guide at the end for people like me that can’t keep anything straight 😂 anyways… gonna go watch Good Omens after this video.

I had high hopes for 'The Bridge Kingdom' too but found myself echoing your thoughts on the lack of authentic chemistry between the characters. You nailed it when you said that romances should focus on why two characters, with their unique dynamics, should be together. I'm also excited that you're diving into Neil Gaiman's works, especially since you're captivated by 'Good Omens'. Can't wait to hear your thoughts on his other works. P.S. Your tea choices are always on point. Chai is a go-to for cozy reading sessions. Cheers! 📚☕

Hi ! I recently dipped my toe in fantasy romance with Paladin's grace from T.Kingfisher, and I really liked it. There was an actual plot, nice world building, tension, dual pov, and mature characters with all the experiences/quality/flaws that come with it.

I have a solution for the assassin falling in love with their target theme, but It would only work for fantasy or si-fi. What if the assassination doesn't fail, only for the target be resurrected or stick around as a vengeful ghost or something. There would even be enough material left for a revenge type sequel from the victoms point of view. And if the vengence succedes, the third book could be a fluffy ghost/zombie/demon/etc. type romance in order to make up for the angsty first two instalments of the series. Or not and stick with the angst and have a hate romance which ends with a truce between the two volatile lovers unable to fully trust each other (while demon possessing random people).

Neil Gaiman is one of my fav writers. He's style is just amazing, it's warm like my fav blanket on a cool evening, with a bit of horror sprinkled like cinnamon powder on my capuccino and stuff. If you my fellow readers want to dive in Gaiman's writing, I recomend you: 1. The graveyard book: A child wanders in a graveyard, how did this child end up in such place? I won't tell you, but I can tell he's not alone in that spooky place, he'll find the must unexpected familly ever. 2. The ocean at the end of the lane: You either love it or hate this book. It's a very personal book brought from the very deepts of Gaiman's soul. Originally he wrote it for Amanda, his significant other. It tells the story of a grown up man, he finds himself in a funeral. After that he wanders around the town and somehow, memories come from the back of his head and drives him to his childhood house. Then he remebers, walking down the lane he finds a house where there lived his old friend... What was her name? Where did she go? And why is there an ocean in a pond? 3. The Sandman (comic book series): I know, comic books... But these are the best comic books ever! There's a Netflix adaptation and I totally love it! Just give it a try: Lod Morpheus, the dream realm, dreams and nightmares! You're gonna love it, I swear!!

Against existence sabre smiles clang; the youthful curve where savored chocolate’s bit. We’re fragile victors, making Time dismayed; the universe’s favorite cosmic blip. Sometimes the sabres cross to kiss at last, a playful duel to trick the haste of Time. Sometimes our face preserved in photographs, a cutlass slanted in the beach’s hide. Opposed to blood, anoint a lip with smores. The grass our bed, we’ll lacerate the stars; the night is bleeding out into the morn. Such summer nights do keep our smiles sharp. Whose shoulder does your sabre smile knight? in chances eyes connect on summer nights. another sonnet that i wrote

About The Bridge Kingdom - the series follows several couples in the same world (each get a duology) and so far the 2nd couple (book 3 & 4) are way more interesting than Lara & Aren. Their book also starts at the end of the book 1, so even if you skip the 2nd book and jump straight to the 3rd you won't really miss anything. TL;DR give Keris & Zarrah a chance!

It's a shame you didn't engage with the characters of Left Hand Of Darkness the way I had, but I think it's so cool to see people on BookTube giving more "high concept" sci-fi a good thorough look. I love Le Guins work, but I also always want to tell people not to worry if there are parts of a story where she throws in a lot of words and terminology you don't immediately understand because you don't really have to 😅 Gaiman is an interesting author. I love listening to him talking about books and he seems like a really cool guy, but when it comes to the works themselves my opinions are very mixed. The books of his I love, I REALLY love. His children's novels and short story collections in particular is fantastic. On the other hand, I really wanted to love American Gods, but I just... didn't. I actually found Anansi Boys, a more recent sort of side book set in the same universe, a much more enjoyable read. I've also had similar issues engaging with some of his Sandman stuff (though again some of it has been great). I certainly don't think it really worked as an audiobook, despite the acclaim.

Also I very much recommend "Good Omens" the book, it's witty and grim and has many laugh out loud moments in it. I personally come from the Terry Pratchett side of this co-writing duo and I wish more people read his books! I'd say Crowley is more of a Neil Gaiman character and Aziraphale is more of Terry Pratchett character and they compliment each other so well!

There is an anime where this concept of body jumping is better explored, is called kaiba!! It is kinda old, and it is one of those where it takes some time for things to develop and get explained, but only 12 episodes and worth the try!!

Hear me out pls pls pls. If you want to read something by Neil Gaiman listen to the audiobooks of the SANDMAN. SO GOOD. Don't read the comics we don't care about the comics. The audiobook is read by neil himself and you need to listen to them. They are in audible (but easy to find online). Really good I promise. (Currently obsesed with good omens too, my heart aches)

Me sitting here, listening to the magic system and my mind keeps on echoing - Altered Carbon~.. Altered Carbon~.. I really can't shake off the feeling, after all in Altered Carbon are basically disposable, even called sleeves, so you can enter new body, if you have the money, basically granting you immortality. That's why I loved the concept of it (and really liked the show tbh). ALSO! I've had this book - The Kidnappers' Essence (1988) by V.Savchenko. I haven't finished it though and can't judge with good or bad, but it's a sci-fi novel with an interesting concept of all your essence that can be digitilized and stolen. For example, you know how to play chess or good in ballet or very smart, know this or that. This knowledge and even some feelings can be digitalized and obvious by the title of this book - stolen. Because it's sci-fi people transferring from planet to another planet don't use means of transportation, but transfer themselves digitally and this is where the theft comes from. I don't know sci-fi stuff like that excites me a lot, it sometimes brings some truly fascinating ideas.. prerequisite is that they're utilized well too.

idk if you read manga, but if you like fantasy romance you’d love akatsuki no yona (or yona of the dawn in english), it’s one of the best romance manga I’ve ever read! it loosely exist in a historical east asian setting, has amazing character writing, fantasy elements, found family troups, action, slow burn, angst, and somewhat of a love triangle but done in a way that actually adds to the tension of existing plot and character dynamics instead of just a device to push the plot forward. highly reccommend!!
