i know libraries don’t always have the books you’re looking for, but i really think us readers need to move toward less buying and more going to the library, trading books, buying books from others who don’t want them anymore, little free libraries, etc.

I definitely have a book buying problem and I’m truly trying to cut back. Getting a job at a bookstore was the best and worst choice of my life! I get 30% off and yes it’s awesome most of the time but now I buy too many books and general bookish merch. Being around people who also love books doesn’t make it easier and not to mention I’m becoming my mother and have started a cookbook collection! To be fair I get most of my cookbooks used but still 😭😂

Life is short, read books you want to read, and pass along the regrets to someone who will truly enjoy! I have definitely gone through phases of buying too many books and later realize I'm just never going to pick it up... but it served a purpose in the moment, I enjoyed having it on my shelf for a while, and now I think of it like a treasure for someone else to find, if someone else finds it in the little free library or at the thrift store for a dollar it will make their day!

“Just because it’s 3,99 doesn’t mean you need to own it”. Love that quote. We really need to get out of our consumerist behaviour loop and I think it helps a lot if the Booktube community (but also the KZbin community in general) stimulates the culture of sustainability rather than the culture of consumerism. I think videos like these already make for a start in that. Acknowledging that just buy/buy/buy doesn’t make you happy. That just because it’s cheap (or not, since people on booktube also spend ALOT of money on books they don’t read or read just once and then never look at again) you don’t have to buy it all the time. I think that’s a good lesson for people watching these videos. The whole culture of consumerism is so toxic and we need to move away from that.

Me too! I like thrillers in audiobooks, and if its a 5 star or im totally obsessed with it, i will buy a copy. Thrillers are generally a hit or miss. I do recommend this to save shelf space or money, pick up the audio first, also for romance. Those two genres are easy to digest even while multitasking.

Using the library really changes how I go about buying books, in that I don’t do it nearly as much any more. Of course, I still buy some, but a lot of time I think “I can get this from the library” or “do I need to own a physical copy of this?” I’m lucky enough to have a good library system, which I know is a privilege, but it’s cut back on my spending so much. I don’t have as many regretful purchases now. I got so tired of buying books that I’d heard people talk about only to give them 1-3 stars. Much happier as a borrower now!

Oh! I forgot to say...I can totally understand and respect the reading for escapism too!!!! I read different things for a lot of differing reasons, myself, honestly-but for something more like escapism sometimes, as well. I wish more people gave reading for lighter/less-serious reasons a little more respect than they often do. I think reading things without worrying how realistic something is or what[ if any] significant "message" or "lesson" it's teaching or not isn't always a bad thing either-and it should be perfectly okay, if different people are looking to get completely different things from what they read, or do read in general for totally different reasons. People's differences can be every bit as important and every bit as much a good thing as what they have in common, sometimes. And, while reading to think or contemoplate regarding various things or to learn or whatever can be great, I think reading just to flex your imagination or have an adventure or a good time or such can be equally wonderful in different ways too. 🙂

I need to just get better about waiting until I can either find them at the library or super cheap because I've been burned by succumbing to the hype. I've learned that I just don't care for magical realism, most fantasy, YA contemporary, science fiction, or historical fiction. And these are genres that are well loved by the big channels that get the ARCs. I still love them but it's more for their personality than shared reading tastes. So it feels like I'm always a year behind as I wait for the hype to die down and get a broader audience.

Sometimes, I don't actually crave more with every character I like either, so I totally get how that might not be a thing which lands as well for everyone. Magnus Bane is one that I actually _do_ crave more of....my own reluctance to read his spin-off books myself though, despite the fact that I own them and do want to read more of him, is because .. Cassie Clare tends to only co-write her Magnus stories rather than authoring them exclusively by her own self, and the way that the other authors write Magnus Bane[ or the other author's interpretation(s) of Magnus Bane's character] just doesn't always hit as well for me as the original version of him. If that makes sense?😅😅 And that's something I discovered personally while reading The Bane Chronicles(collection of Magnus short-stories). Lol And because the Magnus spin-off is whole entire books, not only short-stories, it's not going to be as easy for me to get over it or get through it if I don't end up enjoying the way he's written in the spin-off books as it was when just reading a few short-stories.😶 🙃🤣🤣

Yeaaah... the biggest problem with The Name of The Wind is unfortunately the main character. Perhaps twenty years ago he'd have been acceptable when perfect, beautiful, flawless heroes were more acceptable, but these days he comes across as arrogant and intensely annoying. If you don't like him, which I definitely didn't, it's a slog to get through. And if you do like it... then you're screwed anyway, as the series has been stagnant for over a decade now. The author has shown no signs of being anywhere near finishing the trilogy and appears to have lost interest in it. Sigh.

My problem with historical fiction surprised me when I read it for the first time. My problem was that it drove me crazy not knowing which parts were purely fiction and which parts actually happened. I probably spent more time searching online to verify parts of the story than I did reading the actual book. It's not for me. I've decided historical nonfiction is shocking enough without turning it into a story, so I'll read that instead.

I have to admit I'm jealous. I don't have the luxury to go to the library and check out whether I like a book before buying it. I read almost exclusively in English and my library's selection of English books is very limited (don't live in an English speaking country). So I have to buy books if I want to read them. More often than not they're ebooks because if I were to buy physical copies, they're mostly paperbacks but I prefer hardcovers. Sigh. I'd kill for some of the editions you have available to you. (Eyeing the Call Down The Hawk one especially...)

I'm trying to cut down on my book buying problem, especially not until I unhaul a bunch of books that I have never or will never pick up and read them. I get distracted by flash in the pan impulse passions that I think I want to read, but I really have no interest. And they are not a type of book that I will have a lasting interest in. I tend to buy popular books, that are all the rage for their five seconds of fame, but once again aren't my cup of tea. And I'm a giant sucker for pretty covers. Something I really need to cut back on. My promise to myself was this year is I have to actually read my giant backlog of owned books, instead of just buying a bunch and then never having time to pick them up because there too much before I get distracted by the next book.

Normally not liking characters can be OK if I was into the story, but this seemed like a vehicle for the author to write about crap she studied in school that is totally useless in life unless you wrote a novel set at a college. I cannot for my life understand the fandom for this book. I have read other dark academia and liked it. I just didn't get this.
