Hi! I'm currently reading my first space opera - To Sleep in a Sea of Stars - & I'm loving it so far! About 2/3rds of the way through. :)

One of my favourite books of the year, that also took me outside my comfort zone, is Between These Lines by Stephanie Morrill. It's a YA historical fiction about the Japanese interment camps during World War II. So it follows two characters, a Japanese boy and an Italian girl, who are in love. Throughout the book, you read about the boy's awful time in the camps, the girl trying to protest for the rights of Japanese Americans, and how they keep in touch despite the distance and racism. Really loved it!

Some great non-World War II Historical Fiction - Al Capone Does My Shirts by Gennifer Choldenko(middle grade series about kids living on Alcatraz Island during the great depression. The main character's sister has autism and we get to see how that was handled in the 1930s.) - Fever, 1793 by Laurie Halse Anderson(15-year-old girl who runs a coffeehouse with her family during the yellow fever epidemic in the U.S. It's filled with many of the day to day things that happened back then before the fever came and it's not a depressing historical fiction novel) - Uprising by Margo Peterson Haddix (Three young women (Italian immigrant, Jewish American, and a wealthy woman) who are workers during the triangle shirtwaste fire) - Good Fortune by Noni Carter (this is about a women who escaped slavery and how she created a life in the north.) - Water for Elephants (A veterinarian works at a circus during the great depression) These are bad descriptions, but these are books that aren't super depressing while still showing what life was like back then. I enjoy historical fiction but I have to be in the mood to read the really sad ones. These are really good. The first two are my favorites

This year I started The Poppy War trilogy. It's a grim dark fantasy series based on the sino Japanese war. It is extremely brutal and violent and sad and anger-inducing. Definitely not what I'd randomly pick up. I'm not sure I'd recommend it to anyone who's looking for a hopeful story. Also has a bunch of trigger warnings for genocide, mass destruction, rape. Yeah no, wouldn't recommend but it's still an extremely strong series and I need a break before I pick up the second book.
@adashofash4 жыл бұрын
I’ve heard a ton about that series! I know it needs a lot of content warnings, so thanks for giving those!! I also know so many people love it, but it’s always been one I’ve been a bit scared of getting into because of some of the things it involves, but it’s on my ~potential~ TBR for the future! Hope your break between books is a nice pause before you try the next one! ❤️

If you like fantasy/ historical fiction, read some books by Emma Carrol she writes middle grade historical fiction with a little bit of fantasy in there too. My favourite is “In darkling wood” but they are all great!😌
