Spiritual books are certainly helpful in developing a real thirst for liberation. There is no doubt about it. In fact, many of us became aware of the possibility of enlightenment only by reading spiritual books. Hence, the study of books is essential in the beginning stages of spiritual life. But mere book learning is not enough to awaken higher powers in us and quicken our evolution. This requires the protective guidance and help of a spiritual teacher (a Self-realized guru).

There is a popular quote: "When the student is ready, the teacher will appear. When the student is TRULY ready, the teacher will disappear." After reading such a quote, many students will assume that they are truly ready for liberation and neglect the importance of a spiritual guru, only to find themselves in a state of sorrow when faced with challenges and difficulties later in life.

The teacher disappears in one’s perception. I feel when someone becomes truly ready, the teacher and student become one. They dissolve and a new being is born! ❤

There are countless fraudulent "Gurus" out there, including in various religions. I have found that books by people such as Swami Vivekananda, Swami Shivananda and Swami Satchidananda, among many others, to be very enlightening. So let us not generalize this advice please 🙏

Yet so many of these 'gurus' turn out to be scoundrels and charlatans. As the Buddha reminded us before he left his body, "Be a lamp unto yourself." Teachers can be valuable, but remember they are human just like you, and don't get on your knees to anyone.
