Glad you enjoyed The Remains of the Day. I read it five years ago... What stood out to me is how the butler is living up to a high standard he has for himself and trying to justify his life decisions in the face of feelings of regret. It makes you question your own choices. Very sad, yet resonant... aka a Jimmy book 😂.

The remains of the day is hands down one of the best first person povs I’ve read. I like how Ishiguro’s prose is easy to read yet he still manages to pack so much meaning in his sentences. The difference between British and American culture and how Stevens reacts to this cultural change in Darlington Hall is fascinating as well. And him stepping out of his comfort zone so that he could engage in bantering with other people is some of the funniest parts of the book. I will think about Mr Stevens and his relationships with Miss Kenton, his employer and his father for a long time. Great book! I recommend the film adaptation as well.

I'm a big Anthony Ryan fan and have read two of the Draconis Memoria books, but all of his other stuff. Loved a lot about the series, but you just reminded me I need to finish it up! Lizanne was also my favorite POV.

In February I've read A duology by Tanith Lee "Don't bite the sun" and "Drinking Sapphire Wine", then "The Curse of Chalion" by Lois McMaster Bujold, "The Forgotten Beasts of Eld" by Patricia McKillip and "Journey to Arcturus" by David Lyndsey. Preatty good month for me, and now I'm reading "Birthgrave" by Tanith Lee, a really good first book in a trilogy.

I've completed the whole trilogy of Draconis Memoria. Definitely worth finishing if you liked book 1. I felt like this was a unique take on this type of story line and was happy with the way it finished.

I have a similar view of Mistborn era 2. The ideas are so fun, the execution just doesn't rise to the occasion. I need to get around to reading Kazuo Ishiguro, as a fan of Japanese (and East Asian in general) novels in translation he's been on my radar for a long time. My favorite read in February was Aftershock, by Zhang Ling. Its inciting moment is a real earthquake that happened in 1976, that leveled an entire city in China and killed hundreds of thousands of people. The book then follows one family of survivors as they pick up the pieces and try to move on over the course of the following thirty years. It's only around 200 pages, but it delivers on its themes so powerfully.

It’s worth noting that Anthony Ryan’s best book is Blood Song. I also was pretty underwhelmed by the pariah. I haven’t read The Waking Fire, but if that one is pretty underwhelming too, it might turn you off from Blood Song. I also felt a little underwhelmed by Blood Song, compared to some other people who say it’s one of the best books ever. But it’s really good!

I read Anthony Ryan's Covenant of Steel trilogy in January. That series caught fire for me with the first book, Pariah, and I couldn't get enough. After book 3, Traitor, I was so sad I was finished with the world. I definitely wanted more adventures of Alwyn Scribe.

It's great to see you liked Ishiguro! The Remains of the Day was one of my favourite books last year. I liked all of the novels I have read by him so far (not the short stories), but he always has the theme of memory that might get a bit repetitive. I recommend spacing out the novels. My favourites besides that one are Klara and the Sun and An Artist of the Floating World in case you want to try those in the future :)

Yes, another video, finally! I just added Remains of the Day on my TBR. It's not typically the kinds ok books I would read, but you convinced me, and I wanted to read more Japanese authors to find which ones would suit me the best (aka I really do not jive with magical realism most of the time). I've not tried Anthony Ryan's novels yet, but he's on my list. I'm keeping an eye on further thoughts from you as I'm intrigued by the victorian steampunk setting (I've read no books with that aesthetic yet). I'm wishing you a better reading month in March! 👏

I want to recommend 84 Charing Cross Road by Helene Hanff to you. It is quite short but I always think of it when I hear about Remains of the Day. I think it is more the adaptations because Anthony Hopkins is in both and plays a similar type of repressed character. I think you would potentially enjoy it. The book is about a woman from New York ordering books through letters in London around WWII. Really good uplifting stuff.

Remains of the Day sounds fantastic!! I've always had a soft spot for butlers in TV shows that take it very serious, ala Downton Abbey and Jeeves and Wooster... Pry right up my alley. I had similar feels on Trials of Empire--I liked it but it was really rushed and missed the mark in a few ways for me. I'm actually really excited to hear your thoughts on A Little Life... I tend to love sad books, but even I have a limit, and I feel like your perspective will be a good litmus test for me! Hope your other reading picks end up being great ones too--happy spring!!

Sometimes I feel like I’m having to wade through so much mid stuff to find a banger. But I think the hunt has always been worth it for the feeling I get when a book really clicks with me. I hope if you try the Anthony Ryan book that you like it, it’s not perfect but has some interesting aspects that can work for some people really well I think!

So glad you loved Remains of the Day. It's Ishiguro's best, I think (though I am yet to read The Unconsoled, which I am told is his weirdest). I know everyone loves Never Let Me Go, but honestly, because you loved Remains so much, I think you should read his first two novels before that. They're both shorter (and better) than Never Let Me Go, and you see him fine-tuning the style of unreliable narration that he mastered with Remains. The dialogue especially in A Pale View of Hills is so good, the way his characters always speak past one another, where the best part is the importance of what they're not saying in order to constantly reaffirm their own lies to themselves. Both A Pale View of Hills and An Artist of the Floating World are just as beautiful and impactful as Remains, I think. As for A Little Life...Oof! You might like it. I'm one of the haters. I've never seen a book so disrespectful of its own characters and narrative. Which in a way could be an interesting literary choice, but in the case of A Little Life I think it was more purely a case of pity porn. Reading that book brought me to think back to when I finished The Bluest Eye by Toni Morrison, where in the afterword, Morrison says she considered the book a failure because readers pitied the characrer Pecola. Pecola didn't need pity, she needed anger, understanding, nurturing, help, resistance. I thought of that, and then I thought of A Little Life: Hanya Yanagihara wanted pity. And that is a great disservice to the book and its characters.

I was just in B&N yesterday debating between Remains of the Day or Never Let Me Go and I decided on the latter. Now I wish I had just grabbed both lol. Adding In Ascension and that Anthony Ryan book to my cart right now. Currently reading T.E.D. Klein's Dark Gods and enjoying it so far. My motivation to read has been dwindling lately so I'm not sure what else I will get to this month, but I'm also saving some stuff for next month when I will be vacationing on the beach. I finished reading ASOIAF on Feb 29! So to switch stuff up in March I think I’m going to start with some old school tough guy fiction/mystery. I’m starting with The Maltese Falcon and I plan on reading some James Bond and Philip Marlowe. As far as SFF I’m gonna try Brent Weeks again (I so badly want to like him). I’ll also try to catch up on some Sun Eater. But honestly I’m missing Middle Earth so I just might give some Tolkien a reread.

I still regularly think of Remains of the Day years after reading it, I love how it's so subtle and understated in how devastating it is. A little Life is one of the books I'm most conflicted about. The standout was "How to Live on 24 Hours a Day" which made me wonder why people even write productivity books anymore, cause this book from 100+ years ago gets right to the point with exactly the correct advice AND you can read it in an hour or two 😂

I was super hoping you would jump on Mistborn: The Lost Metal, because I wanted to hear your reaction to the Wayne love of farting in chairs comedic bit. I might do the Richard Swann as audio from the library because I need some audiobooks during the open world grinde of Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth. I just finished Children of Dune and frankly found it better than the first novel. I'm 70 pages into God Emperor and it has been just as good. I have no idea why so many people say to stop after the first book because I'm finding the sequels to be better in every instance.

Everything I read: Freedom of the Mask - Robert McCammon Misery - Stephen King Flowers for Algernon - Daniel Keyes Sphere - Michael Crighton The Scar - China Mieville Wall of Storms - Ken Liu The Black Echo - Michael Connelly This month I'm going to read the 7th book in Robert McCammon's Corbett series (it's so freaking good like you don't even understand) then I'll be reading Empire of the Damned on release day (haters gonna hate) after that I'll probably do Pet Sematary because I loved Misery so much. King knocked Misery out of the park. Full on grand slam. Last thing I got planned is the buddy read I'm in for The Veiled Throne, which I'm excited for but also nervous because it's long AF. 😅

I need to read some of these Grandma books. They sound good. Somehow whenever you say you pitch a book badly it ends up making me want to read it. Seriously. This happens all the time. I'll also say yeah Mistborn era two's not great but personally Lost Metal was my favorite. I have been reading Crossroads of Twilight for the entire month of February, so... yeah

It sucks to hear that you had such a mediocre reading month… you see I read The Age of Madness Trilogy, The Book that Wouldn’t burn, Eleventh Cycle, Of Blood and Fire, The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue, and The Will of The Many… I had two five stars, three 4.5 stars, two 4.25 stars, and one 4 star. I had a freaking amazing reading month and I read more than I normally do.

I feel the exact same way you do about era 2. And all I cared about in lost metal was the Cosmere connection, it didn’t get better character wise or plot wise. If you care about the Cosmere read it if you don’t it’s not worth it lol 😂 I just love the Cosmere so much and I felt like I needed to know for stromlight 5 Also, I really enjoy to range that you read, I read the same way or at least try to. It helps to keep things from getting stale

I felt the same way about Era 2. Kinda regret reading it, but too late now haha. Didn't read much in Feb., sort of hit a slump, but am planning to read The Tiger and the Wolf and maybe the Ember Blade. Everything else will just be mood reading!

69. Nice. Annnywhoo.. yeah, Mistborn Era 2 was mostly a miss for me with a few fun moments. I didn't love the Lost Metal either, but thought it was better than the rest - and yes, by far the most Cosmere-attached. Sanderson is great at many things, but I kind of think you are funny or you aren't. HIs brute-forcing comedy into Wayne's character just winds up feeling hacky.

Huh. Did you try to force your way through Mistborn era 2? The right book at the wrong time, is still the wrong book. Idk, i hated Locke lamora when i forced my way through it, then i picked it up years later when i just felt like reading that kind of story, and it was second-to-none (except stormlight and unfortunate events, of course) It’s weird you like stormlight so much but you don’t like these. The story is vastly different, but writing is almost the same. Steris and wax are my favorite cosmere couple by a country mile. She’s so f***ing cute.

@@thefantasynuttwork i guess everything I’ve heard from you, that checks out. And well, that’s hard to argue. Most people hail stormlight as his best series…. stormlight transcends the other books he writes for very relatable reasons. He has good character arcs in most of his stories, but stormlight is the story he writes that isn’t about rising to some legend/destiny.. stormlight teaches you that it’s not about being THE best, but being YOUR best. The other stories do lack what makes stormlight most of its money 💰; which is the heroes having multiple mental health issues. (Ex : Kaladin is a racist in the first 2 books, but somehow we still love him. ) the people in Mistborn (both eras) are not bad to anybody around them (except the enemy). So seeing stormlight characters be heroic , but very big a-holes at the same time, is subconsciously relatable. It’s hard to see oneself in a Mistborn character. Probably because their ‘problems’ are too grand. Which is ironic, because those stories aren’t as grand as stormlight. Crazy how down to earth those Roshar characters are in such a massive epic
