Hi Jimmy. I finished 2023 with a re-read of A Christmas Carol by Dickens and the only fiction by Rainer Maria Rilke, The Notebooks of Malte Laurids Brigge. 2024 has begun with a holdover from last year, Arctic Dreams by Barry Lopez. Not much structure really. Read I'm most excited for this year and really want to continue: 1. More Black Company. Currently on Dreams of Steel and it is quickly becoming one of my favorite series. I LOVE the direction the series took in the 4th (5h if you count Silver Spike) book, Shadow Games. 2. Continuing discoworld 3. Finishing Earthsea. It's not that long and I will probably eat this up in a month. 4. Ana Karenina. I cannot wait to jump into this one. Especially when everyone says that if you love Erikson you might love Tolstoy. I think I'm privelaged that I can read this in a langauge that is pretty close to Russian actually and so I am doubly excited. 5. Continuing Wars of Light and Shadow. On pause atm because of how demanding it is, but I am loving it so so so much. As someone who loves Tolkien's melancholic beautiful atmosphere in his writing, Janny really nails this same feeling, but has her own voice as well. 5. Pillars of the Earth. Already read like 200 pages of this one years and years ago, but sth came up in life and dropped reading altogether at the time. Can't wait to return to this one. 6. John Willaims, of course. Thanks to you guys lol. 7. GGK, hopefully. I really really want to get to GGK, but we will see if time permits. Kind of want to first get through some other books on TBR that I have on my shelves before buying more books. Other than that, if time permits or I just decide to pick a book up on a whim: Sun Eater, R Scott Bakker, Book of the New Sun (100% reading this sometime in the near future, but 2024 might be too early), Tad Williams, more Donaldson.

Ahh great reviews man! Are there supernatural elements in Brother? I'm not into horror because of that, but the scenario sounds very interesting to me (reminds me of a movie someone told me about - I can't remember the title, but I know the producer is Greek - where parents taught their children that forks are spoons and just played with language in a way that isolated them from the world). I've also added Ice on the list. I've not reached out postapocalyptic books, but as a dystopian lover, I feel I should look more into this genre (though your description sounds like magical realism, which isn't my cup of tea 😅). I've read and enjoyed The Lies of Locke Lamora and will continue on at some point, I've just not been in a hurry. I already have Red Seas Under Red Skies to go on my Kindle, so we shall see in 2024. ☺️ I'm curious about your thoughts on Murakami, everything I've heard has never compelled me to pick his works up (and I've watched full-length reviews). This new year, I'll mainly focus on historical fiction set in the Ancient world as I've decided in the middle of 2023 - after being struck by unexpected inspiration - to write a novel set in Ancient Greece. I'm still debating about the time period, but I've been having a blast reading through hidden gems. 👌 I'm wishing you an amazing year! May your family be healthy and at peace, and I'm looking forward to new exciting content (without burning out), as always. 👏

I'm *kind of mood reading this year, although I'm prioritizing a lot of book series that I either am already reading or just want to do so. I hope you love Wind-Up Chronicle - it's probably a top 3 work of Murakami for me (I've read 13 or 14 of his books). I'm definitely interested in seeing your thoughts!

I'm excited to give it a go! I have a ton of priorities in my head but if I wrote them down I think i'd realize quickly there's no chance I fit them all in this year lol

Haha best not overwhelm yourself with that!

I plan to read more books I want instead of reading only short books to hit some meaningless number. Currently, I am on book 2 of The Sun Eater series, The City and the Stars by Arthur C. Clarke and A Clash of Kings by GRRM. I hope you're doing well.

Yes! Numbers don’t matter in 2024 😎

I'm just trying to finish series I've started. I think I started over 30 series last year and finished 1. 😑

So glad you're enjoying BotNS! Are you planning to read Urth directly after or taking a break? I personally read it after reading the first four twice and it was so good! I think it's really enhancing the story. Also got a lot out of it because of Alzabo Soup. I only did that for Urth chapter by chapter. Great podcast. I finished Beartown #1 last month. Really liked it. He's a great writer. Looking forward to your thoughts :)

I'd like to get to Urth soon after but it's really up in the air. I like to read a good variety of authors so maybe towards the back half of the year!

I also read Ice in December! It was pretty good, really creepy. Well-written, but not a new favourite...

I recently read Hard-Boiled Wonderland and the End of the World by Murakami. There were some interesting themes but I found the story to be meandering and the way the main character talked about sex and women to be very cringy. I hope you have better luck!

I had the idea that I was going to have a very chill start to 2024, so naturally I ended up accidentally overcommitting. XD January lineup: Daughter of the Forest by Juliet Marillier, Sword of Kaigen by ML Wang, Guards Guards by Terry Pratchett, A Court of Broken Knives by Anna Smith Spark, Golden Son by Pierce Brown (reread), I Never Promised You A Rose Garden by Joanne Greenberg, Beyond the Wand by Tom Felton... and a couple others on the side. Lol. XD We'll see how this goes.
