Thank you, Katie! I especially loved your comment that you were not sure you had the right personality for Booktube. Obviously you do! I initially hesitated about starting a channel because I am an introvert and not very bubbly-but people have been so supportive of both my relatively quiet style and my nerdy book choices. After having a channel for nearly six months, I am feeling more and more comfortable in front of the camera-but I am still introverted. Hearing that you slow your videos down makes me realize that I could speed mine up a bit! Thanks again.

I discovered booktube through you. I decided to start acquainting myself with English or anglophone classics this year. I had until then, only read in French with regards to classics except a few books (The Brontes) in high school. I read great expectations and I was searching for someone who could comment on it with an academic background in classics. I didn’t want a random impression or opinion but actually someone who studied that period. I was thrilled to discover your channel and as a result have developed a Dickens obsession. I could never te read certain french classics like Zola or Balzac which I read in high school, I find them dated. But not Dickens and you introduced me to some great titles. The read alongs are very encouraging and keep me motivated to read bigger books. I used to read so much as a teenager but since becoming a lawyer I read much less. This has changed with your channel ! ❤️

The advise to do the BookTube Newbie tag is excellent! I just started this booktube / authortube channel last month and I did the newbie tag for both of those. All of the subscribers I've got so far have come from those two videos. I've been on KZbin for over 2 years in the art space, and it's really weird to be back at square one on this channel now, though. It's weird to check back on a new video and see very few views (if any), while I'm used to my art channel getting views before I can post the associated painting to my Instagram feed.

Amazing and thorough video with lots of good advice! I agree especially with your first point about personality. Another thing I worried about when I started my channel, was how different my personality was in different videos - sometimes I'm a bit more upbeat, sometimes I'm quiet and serious, sometimes I'm very silly. I worried (and still do sometimes) that that comes across as fake, but really every video just captures the mood I'm in on the day I record, and that's fine. You're so right with your advice about choosing a good channel name. I would also add to not call yourself Spinster's Library when you're married because PEOPLE WILL LITERALLY NEVER STOP ASKING 😂 I should probably spend more time on meta-data. Thank you for the shoutout also!

Honestly Claudia the variety makes it seem more sincere and not like you have a fixed booktube persona that you put on when you record.

Hi Katie, although this video is about 3 years old, I'm leaving a comment here just to let you know that your channel has not just enriched my reading life (by introducing me to victorian authors I had never heard of before) but also inspired / motivated me to finally get over my hesitations and start my own channel where I'm trying to combine my two passions literature and language learning. I still feel a bit intimidated when talking to the camera, in particular because English is not my native language, but I'm sure this will improve. Thank you so much for all this info! I have a question though. I started my channel before I knew BookTube was a thing. My show is called Yarns and Yarns as I'm a knitter/crocheter and a reader/writer. I'm wondering if I need to separate the two themes. I'm now looking to make writing my full-time career and knitting is really just a hobby that I love. I still like the title though. Or maybe I just need to come up with a whole new separate title for knitting and a different one for books. I'm a very eclectic reader, though I gravitate to historical fiction/fantasy (which is my writing genre) and classics. One of the biggest problems I know I have with growing an audience is that I'm not consistent at all. I go months without posting. I'm thinking that a vlog style of recording might help with that. I'll be playing around with that style next week.

I'm just learning how to use thumbnails, so its still a struggle, but I like how my upload system makes it easier to do. Excellent video. I am looking at starting into posting booktube content, having been active in the readathon community already for years, and hosting a fairly large readathon for the past 2 years (Dewey's 24hr, and also Shadow Lounge Monthly Readathon for however many years it's been a thing now). I have a handicap (my hands are rather different looking) so I avoided being on camera or in videos because I know I gesture a lot. Having been forced to get used to Zoom calls with video during Covid though, it was not so bad, and my excuse of noy having the right equipment is just an excuse. It may take a while still to get a first video posted, but I am hoping by the April Dewey's readathon to be actually posting my own bookish content on youtube.

Thank you for the tips! 🙏🏻 I mentioned you in my latest upload because I wanted to (somehow) promote classic reads for Filipinos like me. 😊 I'll be joining the #victober2020 and I can't wait to be part of it. 🖤✨

I found this fascinating. I’m a blogger, have been for over 12 years. Thought about Book Tube, but I don’t have the courage. I think I’m tooooo old with all these up and coming youngsters🤣 I love watching relaxed book tubers who are just being themselves with non of the top hand actions 😆 Been following your channel for a while, I think we are connected on Goodreads. I used the comments here to find some new book tubers, so yes! It’s worked
@katiejlumsden4 жыл бұрын
But not at all - no one is ever too old for Booktube!

Thanks this was just what I needed. I would like to start a classics book channel so watch this space! May take time as I have a busy family. Have u discussed monetisation?
@booksimnotreading4 жыл бұрын
Janet, Claudia from Spinster’s Library did a great video on that topic too. Very excited to hear about a new classics Booktube channel. Please let me know when you’ve started and good luck!
@katiejlumsden4 жыл бұрын
Agreed - do watch Claudia's video! I haven't really discussed monetisation very much. I use it; you'll see adverts at the end of my videos, though never in the middle. I don't earn a huge amount through monetisation, but it helps. I didn't monetise my videos until more than a year into my channel, I think.

This was great! I wish you had made this a year ago. 😀 I will say your shout-out early in the life of my channel made a big difference. My notifications exploded! I also wondered as I am looking ahead to summer reading - is Jane Austen July still on this year? I would really love to participate.
@katiejlumsden4 жыл бұрын
Thanks! And yes, Jane Austen July should be happening again :)

Thank you for this video, Katie! I'm thinking of starting a booktube channel, so your tips are really welcome. I was wondering whether you would advise to do video's in English when it's not your mother tongue? I feel more comfortable in Dutch, but there are rarely any Dutch speaking booktubers...
@katiejlumsden4 жыл бұрын
Thank you :) So, in general I would say the two big language communities on Booktube are English and Spanish. So there would probably be a bigger audience for you if you made videos in English (and I do watch a lot of people from various countries in Europe whose first language is not English, but who make videos in English) - but you could also make videos in Dutch and add subtitles if you wanted to make your audience bigger. Maybe start a channel and do a video in each and see how it goes? I'm probably not the most useful person to ask as English is my only language, so maybe reach out to some Booktubers who Booktube in their second language and see what they think :)

Thank you, so interesting. I was thinking of starting a channel, but after watching this video, I don't think I can manage. So I really appreciate knowing what is involved. I wonder please, you say to search for the booktube newby tag. How do I do this please. Do I just put those words in the main search, or is there some way I can search tag lines on their own? I am sorry if this is obvious, I'm a blind user and sometimes miss the visually obvious links and buttons. Many thanks for all the hard work, I really love your content. Shell X

Thanks! Just search 'Booktube Newbie Tag' in the KZbin search bar, and you'll find new people! If you click the 'Filter' button at the top, you can select people who have posted it in the latest week or month.

I've only recently stumbled on Booktube & being an avid reader - wow, I like it. I'm glad to have found you as I like classics, Jane Austen, historical fiction & am not very interested in new releases. Don't bother to look me up, I don't have a podcast !! BTW what do you think of Georgette Heyer ? Just wondering...
@katiejlumsden4 жыл бұрын
Booktube is great! So, I have never actually read any Georgette Heyer. Hopefully one day I will!

I never did the Booktube Newbie Tag either! 😂😂 This was endlessly fascinating, Katie. I never gave much thought to any of these things when I started and I so wish I had. Victober was how I found so many other booktubers who started around the same time as me. Thanks for this! So much to think about.

1) What is TBR? 2)What does victober mean?
@NadaOQ964 жыл бұрын
1) TBR stands for "To Be Read". It is the list of books one plans to read for the next month/year/readathon...etc 2) Victober is short for Victorian October and it is a month long readathon dedicated to Victorian literature. You can find more about it on Katie's channel or the channel of any of her co-hosts

Great video - some useful tips that I should definitely take on board!! Find it daunting posing for the thumbnail so avoid it - even though I am less likely to click on a video without a face haha 🙄
@katiejlumsden4 жыл бұрын
Thanks! I always film rather than take a photograph for thumbnails - so I film like 20 seconds of me smiling, and then pick the best frame. I'm very un-photogenic, so I find this super helpful!

_¡Hola,_ Katie! I've been following you for almost two years now and have seen you grow exponentially (as well as LucytheReader, The_Bookchemist, and Clifford at BetterThanFood, too) and that's been quite encouraging. I always look forward to #Victober and plan ahead, for sure! Keep up the Great Work!
