Wow!! You’ve got such an impressive and sophisticated collection - definitely more of what I would normally like to read, so it gives me lots of recommendations:) I want to try and read all of Austen’s novels next year and all of the Brontë’s novels (this could be too ambitious!) but I will definitely start with Shirley after what you’ve said:)

Lovely video! It's so nice to know that you really appreciate books, not just use them as decoration! It shows itself in such small things (eg. You mentioning that the Penguin Clothbound have good notes as their first characteristic. I have seen these books everywhere on Bookstagram and did not know that!). Even the ordering of the books is well done! Extremely unique video, great selection of books, marvelous shelves, lovely explanations!
@lucythereader

This comment means so much to me, Adya, so thank you so much for leaving it. I feel there is some pressure with booktube and Instagram these days to own books purely for aesthetic purposes, but I feel with my collection that it must be functional, too, prioritising a good reading experience and furthering my knowledge over everything else. So I'm very glad that that came across in this video! The Penguin Clothbound notes are brilliant -- the same, usually, as the traditional black-spined Penguin Classics, but I find them more durable, too, so I tend to go towards the former over the latter! :)
@buchdrache1409
@buchdrache1409 4 жыл бұрын
@@lucythereader You are most welcome! Honestly, it is very admirable how and what you prioritize! And yes, i got a bit sick of Bookstagram because of the times people were putting multiple (very expensive, Folio Society and Easton Press and Barnes and Nobles, etc.) copies of the same book in the pics and then confessing that they hadn't read any of them. I love owning a lot of books too, of course. And who doesn't love a pretty book! But, i think more and more people are starting to view them as something that aids the décor of their room. The collecting of the Penguin Drop Caps and such like... I mean, how can one want to read each one in the collection just because the colours make a rainbow! Looking over your books is such a joy. It's the kinda home library i would want. With well-loved books, in an order based more on content than colours, mixed with expensive and cheap books, no funko-pops or anything, with a ton of non-fiction and yet all of it looks highly personal and unmistakably yours. Love the over-filled bookcarts too! Basically, congrats on being such a wise (and well-read!) person at such a young age! And also on being a truly fabulous Booktuber and Bookstagrammer (i love #classicscommunity and use it without fail!).

Hi Lucy! I just started on the Bronte shelf part of the tour and am interrupting the video to tell you my book club read "The Professor," and though not considered Charlotte's best work, we all saw a lot of humor in it! I enjoyed the story very much, and you knowing Charlotte as you do, when you finally do read it I think you will really like it too! Okay, I must continue (am very impressed with the tour and layout so far ... ) ~Debbie from Rochester, NY

I know this video is quite old now but I hadn't seen it before and I am just starting reading classical fiction and wanted to see your books for some ideas of what to read. Plus I love looking at other peoples collections. I love your vintage books and the really old ones. I am struggling to read at the moment. I keep picking up books reading one chapter and giving up. I just can't seem to settle. I think this is due to health issues plus the changes in life style due to Covid. I am working from home and barely going out, again because I have poor health, and cannot risk catching this new virus. Anyway for some reason I purchased a copy of Wuthering Heights a couple of weeks ago. I liked the cover art work and decided to give it a try. I've never watched it on telly or anything so it is totally new to me. I am half way through so not given up with it yet! I am not sure yet if I like it or not but the story is captivating and engaging. I don't much care for any of the characters but I will reserve judgement until the end of the book. I have also ordered quite cheaply copies of Jane Eyre, Shirley and Agnes Gray. I think for the moment I will stick with the Brontes as they seem to be quite popular. I am not a lover of Jane Austen tales having seen some adaptations on the telly and at the cinema. I have also bought because I heard it raved over a copy Middlemarch. The size is a bit daunting though. Lovely copy though. As a new to classics person what do you recommend for me to read? Any ideas are welcome.

Persuasion is my favourite Austen. As for Hardy’s Laodicean, I believe it is pronounced LAY-OH-DIS-EE-AN. It comes from a Biblical reference to a congregation who were called ‘Lukewarm’ in their devotions. The word has entered our language meaning, half-hearted or lukewarm. Hope this is useful. Love your library.

Lucy, I hope to one day own as many books as you. My edition of And Then There Were None by Agatha Christie looks exactly like yours. Unfortunately, I do not own physical copies of any of Lucy Maud Montgomery's books. However, I have downloaded most of her books on my Kindle. I have read two of Jane Austen's books, Pride and Prejudice and Northanger Abbey. You have countless Bronte books. You have three copies of your novel, The Paper and Hearts Society. I endeavor to publish my writing and get it in your bookshelves. You have all of Charles Dickens's books in your possession. We are reading The Pearl by John Steinbeck. I love reading classics. I am currently reading The Age of Innocence by Edith Wharton. I purchased it after you recommended it to me. I watched the full forty-five minutes of this video. I submitted my short story, Ambition and Rejection to the Scholastic Writing Awards. Award recipients will be announced in March. The deadline for submission is Thursday. Your bookshelves are very organized. In 2020, I will read Vanity Fair by William Makepeace Thackeray. The next book I will read is Mrs. Dalloway by Virginia Woolf. It is my goal to entice the love of reading in everyone. I love you

I love his novels The Invisible Man and the more terrorific The Island of Dr. Moreau ( there is a movie adaptation about that one). The other author I admire so much is M.R.
