I have to admit that I’ve never heard of the cozy fantasy genre, though it almost sounds like a bit of an oxymoron: fantasy characters and situations with all the adventure, excitement, danger, and thrills removed, and replaced with people and creatures with 9-to-5 jobs, dogs-or something equivalent-to walk, recycling to put out to the kerb, and kids to take to soccer practice; although I assume there’s more to it than that. The only book that I’ve ever read that comes remotely close to matching the cozy fantasy genre would be “The Wind in the Willows” by Kenneth Grahame. I’ve always loved Grahame’s depiction of the English countryside in the Edwardian era, and his imaginative accounts of the daily lives of the local community members, including Mole, Water Rat, Badger, and the irrepressible Mr. Toad, although I was approaching my adolescent years before I fully understood what was going on in the chapter titled, “The Piper at the Gates of Dawn”. The coziness factor abounds in all the descriptions of the animals’ various homes, which are mostly underground but contain comfortably furnished parlours complete with overstuffed armchairs in front of cheerful fires, various tunnels, chambers, and well-provisioned storerooms in the case of Badger, and kitchen larders complete with every kind of comestible including bottles of Old Burton Ale at Mole’s subterranean address. And there’s the warm and generous hospitality that the animals extend to visitors, expected or otherwise, at any hour of the day or night. I think it’s the same coziness factor-or “homeyness” as my daughters used to say when they were young-which explains the perennial attraction for the idiosyncratic bachelor lodgings at 221B Baker Street, where Sherlock Holmes hangs his deerstalker hat, or the rambling old country homes in peaceful English villages where Agatha Christie stages her cozy domestic murders.

Generally speaking Cozy Fantasy is a fantasy novel with little to no stakes that focuses a lot of slice of life. But for me cozy fantasy is broader than that. It's more a feeling I get while reading. It's books that warm my heart and make me smile. And they usually have fun magical creatures. I love the joy they bring me.
