Annnnd it starts... Look I'm not judging anyone on what they read. AT ALL. Most of my reading is 100% for entertainment, read all the romance, read all the YA or read all the non fiction you want, I don't care. But let's just stop pretending SJM, CC and all the other popular YA writers are the best writers out there and that it's great literature. It's not. AND IT'S OKAY. But let's just stop pretending!

About kids in apocalypse scenarios: I actually think writers get it all wrong here. Children are super resourceful, adaptive and good at reading people (like their parents) and how these people react in certain situation. So for example they wouldn't be annoying and scream in dangerous situations because they would adapt to the parents behavior and understand that they are in danger. Emotionally they would probably even handle the apocalypse better than grown-ups.

In my apocalypse story, the child character uses her cuteness and the adults' drive to protect kids to her advantage. She lowers their guard and then kills and eats them, and that's how she survives. Children are definitely survivors!

Yes, I recently finished the Gone series and that is all kids under the age of 15 in an end of the world type situation. I didn’t think I would like it because of that but I loved it. Most of the characters were able to adapt to the living conditions. Many died. But most did what they had to do to survive.

Totally agree with you about female YA protagonists’ physical descriptions. I think about the idea that female beauty is empowering, but that it only empowers women over other women (and never over men). I feel like that could be what Maas is driving at, but that may be giving her too much credit. Although Shadow and Bone wasn’t as good as I thought it’d be, I was glad they Bardugo mentioned Alina having acne and being sickly. Kinda annoying that it was ultimately a result of her “repressing her powers,” but still nice that she wasn’t pretty. I’ve fallen in love with Mackenzie Lee’s writing & I think Felicity is one of the female protag I’ve read in YA this year. Same goes for Suzanne Collins: Katniss having leg hair is so refreshing, and even though she gets “made pretty” for the games, it’s clear part of herself is being stripped from her. More dystopians/fantasy and historical fiction should take into account differences in beauty standards/ the practicality of things like shaving/plucking/cleaning.

Sarah J. Maas is on my list of authors to never-ever-ever-read unless I'm being held at knifepoint. I have no interest in trashy YA fantasy novels with archetypal female characters who have to show no weakness and be the most badass person that walked the earth. I think they may be tailored towards a younger audience because I would have likely adored her novels years ago.

My reading is slowly progressing and I've gone from all YA books to recently finding out my love for adult fiction books. I do enjoy some YA, but I am beginning to get frustrated and become more critical with the one dimensional characters and story lines that aren't as complex and interesting as adult fiction. I do love a good romance, but some of the YA romances are so stupid!! Like 17 year olds who put their partners over LIFE after literally TWO DAYS.... like ??? Be logical ahaha!!!

LOL your synopsis of Throne of Glass was spot on. I read it several years ago back when I feel that I was far less critical of books and actually rated it 4/5 on Goodreads. But even at the time Celaena drove me crazy because she really was the worst assassin in the history of ever. If she's the best assassin in that realm, they must not have a very high bar for assassins. I started to grow more and more frustrated with the series as time went on. The third book was absolute garbage. 4th book was better, but even so I've had the 5th book sitting on my shelf for months and I still haven't brought myself to read it. I'm noticing the older I get, the less patience I have for YA main characters. Especially when they are written like Celaena.

For me the worst book I read was Carry On by Rainbow Rowell. I was really angry at first but now I can only laugh about it. It's hilariously bad. Firstly it reads like the last book in a series because we basically get thrown into the story before the big showdown with the villain (which was so stupid, both the guy and the situation). I think the worst part about this was the 'magick system' (the term 'magick' annoyed me so much). Basically the spells in this world are popular sayings /nursery rhymes etc. The villain gets defeated with shouted out Queen lyrics. Enough said. For 3/4 of the book nothing was happening, which was weird because again, it's like the last book in a series and the ending just blew up and pissed me off so much. The Dumbledore guy was so maddening, both Simon Snow and the Hermione-double were idiots. We were supposed to believe that everyone was so close, but we never got to see that, because LAST BOOK IN A SERIES! Baz was the only good thing in this story, but was later ruined as well by association with Simon. I gould go on forever.

I'll give it to you, Throne of Glass is painful to get through. There's no rhyme or reason as to why Celaena acts the way she does, and I found it incredibly frustrating while reading! However, like ACOTAR, the first book does NOT do the actual series justice. I found ACOTAR pretty.. meh, but had heard the next 2 were great, so I read on and I'm glad I did. The ToG series changes SO much from the first book in it, the amount of character development the characters go through is insane and I truly believe the ToG series is worth another shot. I also remember reading somewhere that SJM came up with the whole plot/storyline when she was in high school. Not that this means anything but as someone who has read and kept up with her books since ToG started, her writing style has definitely improved over the last few years. I honestly feel like she has grown up/matured with her books, and it shows in each of them. I hope you can give them another shot, I found them to be a really easy read (while I have my issues with each book) and I really started to enjoy them after the first. The last 2 in the series, Tower of Dawn and Queen of Ash were definitely my favourite. If you do continue on with the series I'd love to hear your thoughts!

Hey Emily, I get what you are saying about Eragon! I actually love that book cos I grew up with it and I obviously read it at some turning point in my development or reading. Its mad because I was thinking something similar about all the American (and maybe the Canadian) readers who love Shirley Jackson because she has books on the curriculum in school in America. But I am in Ireland and she wasn’t ever on any school reading lists here, shes not widely known here, so I read my first Shirley Jackson age 25 as opposed to age 15 and I just thought meh, not bad not special, but on goodreads and booktube etc shes mentioned so much!! I was not able to understand how EVERYONE seemed to be reading her!

You're making a good choice to not continue the Eragon series. I started the series in middle school, and yes, some things get better, but nothing that series did could make up for the last 100 pages of the last book. Instead of ending at the final confrontation with maybe 10 pages of wrapping it up, he tried to tie up EVERYTHING at the end and ended up with a boring, pointless ending. Even the 500ish pages before it, which were the most action packed and engaging of the series from my memory, could never save that ending. I will forever be bitter about it.

I think the point is that she has improved with practice, not that she was young and dumb. I agree. The characters are way more developed as you go on. The love triangle goes away. It's not perfect, but a lot of the issues you mentioned get resolved given time.

I share the same opinions of Throne of Glass as you did. I hated how Celaena was portrayed as a badass when there was nothing really badass about her. I also don't really like how people assume we're hating on this book because we want to ride the hate train for it. I hated it since the moment I read it and let people around me know about it. But I'm glad that people aren't afraid to show their distaste for this book anymore.

From everything I heard that you hated about Throne of Glass, I really recommend that you try Twelve Kings by Bradley Beaulieu. It can be a little bit slow and predictable at times, but it's like evrything Maas book wasnt. The plot is quite complicated, but the main character girl's mother was also murdered by king(s) and she is plotting her revenge, going on trials to join their kind-of guard 'squad'. And she IS badass, not described as. She is not written as perfect, but as a fighter and human being. There are plenty of thrilling fight scenes, not a big focus on love interests and there's plenty of complicated but interesting political intrigue. There's a lot of beautifully but also savagely written fight scenes. Like one seen can describe a bloody and sweaty fight and another she is in a ritual - but deadly - sword dance. Like I said, it can be predictable and some parts are slow but overall I always recommend it to people that did not like Maas's book series. The progress is worth it - she works hard as an assissin to infiltrate and try to kill (immortal) kings, she gets close to some other women (oh yeah there's a terrifying elite squad of the kings' daughters) while plotting her revenge and although feeling sad she is betraying them, she sticks to her vengeance. Hell, of course she will also choose her goal over some boy. And she's like, one of the best assissins ever (along with Vin from Mistborn). And THANK GOD she is not described as being seen as attractive by every bllody guy. And I can only point three characters that are attracted to her in the series - her lover, a childhood friend, and a woman who starts to admire her. If a guy hates her, he hates her. It is never like "oh but he secretly likes her!". No, they're enemies. Let girls have guy enemies around her age without making them a love interest. (plus I love your channel, you're one of the few booktubers who's taste I can truely relate to and trust. You've got yourself a subscriber!)

For me, SJM and CC aren't the best authors, and they write some eye-rolling tropes, but dammit if they aren't trash that I consume. Particularly with CC, I feel like at least her writing has grown and her plot has grown the more she writes in the Shadowhunters world, and I'm just complete and utter trash for it. I have no shame, but I wholly agree that these books aren't literary greatness.

Def to each their own, and I will be the first to say that Throne of Glass is def not art, it was just ok for me...but almost everything you mentioned has a reason for it if you continue the series. By the end of the 2nd book my mind was blown, and it just improved from there. But, I do feel that SJM is not for everyone, people seem to love or hate her. At least you tried :) One thing I will say is she is not an assassin by choice, and that's why when left to her own devices she does none of it. Only when she has to, or when she's out for revenge.

I did grow up with Eragon and it definitely gets better. There are definitely problems with it though and I believe a lot of it comes from the fact that the author was only 19 when it was published. That's why it reads a lot like fanfiction rather than like a published book.

This is my third comment regarding Throne of Glass on your channel/Twitter :D :D :D I swear, it really gets better with each book. I, as you, was waiting for the assassin bit in the first book - nothing happened. But lot will happen in second book and the following ones. I think that from the 7 (or 8 if you are counting the prequel) books I truly fell in love with the series in the 4th book and then it was just jaw dropping. Just saying to not give up on the series ;) I totally get your opinion I was feeling (not as strongly) similarly dissapointed but it really really really gets better. :)

All right, so when people say that Throne of Glass's protagonist is annoying -- as I always hear-- is that like her character flaw? Like does she change at the end of the book at all? Is there at least any justification for her actions like, say, Harry's angst and annoying behavior in Order of the Phoenix?
@BookswithEmilyFox

She doesn't feel like she's supposed to be unlikeable hence why I found her annoying. She's also a crap assassin even though we're told the opposite. Who knows if there's some sort of explanation later on but it's not in book 1.
