THE FIRST: A Novel by bestselling author C. G. Cooper
What if there was a place for heroes to come home, to heal, to rediscover their hope and heart and purpose in the world?
There is, and the name is Lone Peak Ranch. Let the miracles and healing begin.
Lone Peak Ranch was a place where heroes once came and now come again, bidden and called. They found healing, brotherhood, love, and happiness. THE FIRST is a story about Jack and Sadie, Ricky and Betsy. Separated by decades, their stories written through battle and hardship, from Guadalcanal to Big Sky, Montana, where will their fates collide, and what will this place of seeming coincidence become to each one of them? Who is the mysterious benefactor who has reopened the gates of Lone Peak Ranch and given a new line of heroes a chance at a new life? Read on and see . . .
NOTE FROM THE AUTHOR -
Dear Reader,
Not long ago, I read an article about World War II and a partnership between the U.S. Military and the U.S. National Park Service. The result was the establishment of rest and recuperation (R&R) camps within American national parks for returning veterans. There was even a naval hospital inside Yellowstone. Who knew?
So my mind wandered . . .
Then I visited Big Sky, Montana and the pieces came together. A place once magic and healing would one day be again. That's where my story began, where words flowed onto the page. What happened next was a search into the meaning of heroes, a quest to find self and a deeper gratitude for all that life has to give. Two sets of characters came to life: one from the 1940s and one in the present. A Marine and an amazing woman in each.
For me, this story (and hopefully many more books IF you end up liking them) was about digging into the shared sacrifice of heroes and their loved ones. What does it mean to be a hero? Who do we go to for help? What does a worthwhile life look like? And what if hero roles are reversed?
I hope I've done each of these characters justice and I hope you see part of yourself or a loved one in each of them. If not, maybe you'll just enjoy a good story that doesn't mind taking a splash in the pool of hope and wonder. Because that's what I did while writing, and that's what I plan to do going forward.
Here's to the hero in each one of us, and here's to you and the wonders you have yet to spread, my friend.
Let me know what you think,
C. G. Cooper

I’d subscribe if I thought the next book I’d listened to didn’t have so many reminders to subscribe. I mean, I greatly appreciate the hard work that goes in to producing something like this, and when I have insomnia in the middle of the night, it gives me something to listen to, but it breaks the flow of the story when somebody interrupts with the PSST! Ok well I love the way you write, i love the things you focus on, the way you develop your characters. The only thing I find difficult is relating to them, and that’s my racism rearing its ugly head! I don’t get Americans. I’m an Aussie, and you expect others to be different from you, Japanese, Chinese, African, Slavic ect. You know they have totally different cultures and stories, but Americans are so close to us in most ways that I kind of expected them to be very similar to us. Yet they couldn’t be more different, and I don’t like them. I know that’s rude and totally unacceptable but that’s the way I feel. I’m trying to understand them more by listening to your story, but I feel like it’s making it harder to get them. I’ll let you know at the end if I’ve made any headway! Thanks for letting us share your work! BTW, I’ve liked and subscribed!

Part 2, it’s a truly beautiful story, but it’s so far from true. It’s like a lovely fairy tale. Although I love and appreciate fantasy, the subject matter is too close to the bone for me to appreciate it. In reality there’s an enormous number of veterans, homeless and destitute, drowning in misery, that are simply ignored and forgotten. I’m afraid that makes me way too angry and sad to be happy about the subject matter!

Definitely not the best choice for vets that aren't doin' great. I didn't even make it past the 3rd chapter, and I was so pissed I threw my phone. I THOUGHT it said it was fantasy/Sci fi. Actually, it was DEFINITELY fantasy, because in THIS world, there sure as hell aren't any upper-echelon officials, going out of their way to rehabilitate soldiers, heroes or other! Definitely a triggering book for veterans. Would Not recommend it.

I know this is going to sound bad, and probably make someone angry, but please try not to take it that way...please? When I find a spot that has booked I like I subscribe immediately, so I won't lose track of it. The only thing that makes me second guess that strategy, is when the makers CONSTANTLY hound me for a subscription. Once at the beginning, or at the end seems acceptable. Doesn't bother me. They make a video, youtubes a bitch, so they should ask after all of their hard work. I don't think that's unfair. What you have going here...I don't know that I can explain completely why it makes me so angry...it could be partially because I use these audiobooks to distract my mind so I CAN sleep. I have insomnia, and without distraction, I can't sleep. Makes me a light sleeper as well, so when , between EVERY SINGLE CHAPTER, you beg for subscriptions, my natural reaction, is to refuse to subscribe. It's akin to having someone chase you at an intersection , begging to wash your clean windows for $5...THE WINDOWS ALREADY CLEAN, SO WHY YOU BEGGIN ME TO LET YOU WASH IT! Aggregating experience, I bet most would agree? If you didn't see the parallel, what I'm saying, is I probably subscribed the minute I found your page of someone else's books. Having you begging for a sub, and waking me up ..it means these books just don't work, so unfortunately...I'm probably going to leave, unsubscribe, and listen to someone else's collection of books. No offense to the author. I was enjoying the book. Thank you for writing it. I will look for it somewhere else. Thanks again.

A good book about knowing when to ask for help. Do have one severe problem with it though. Ricky Lovejoy couldn't afford to go to college? In 1,943? Most colleges were free until around the mid to late 1,960s here in the U.S., not that most people know that little fact. The worst I saw in a 5 minute research online was a one-time fee of 150 dollars, so yeah he COULD have afforded college.
