Got a few people asking about the Kent Kimberling case where a man was recently sentenced to 2 years in prison for possession of a cannon. Wanted to provide some clarifications on this. His whole thing started because he was allegedly making threats against his neighbors and his police. That instigated the "welfare check" where his local police found a loaded cannon inside his home pointed to his front door. He has a long negative history with his local law enforcement. The local law enforcement then referred the case to the ATF. www.wcgazette.com/story/2019/08/15/news/cannon-loaded-guns-located-in-threat-case/30003.html His conviction (based around a guilty plea) likely stemmed from the fact that the cannon itself wasn't a replica of a pre-1898 design, which is required to be legal per 26 U.S.C. 5845; 27 CFR 479.11. My cannon is a 1/2 scale replica of an 1841 Mountain Howitzer. You can have a cannon that meets certain criteria, and odds are, his cannon didn't meet that criteria so they built the case against him and succeeded. The indictment also lists an "improvised explosive projectile described as a small metal carbon dioxide gas cartridge and soda can" which I'm skeptical about, but would love to see what kind of pneumatic exploding round he whipped up. That alone resulted in one of his two prohibited DDs on the indictment. When he was arrested, he allegedly stated that he was "ready to join his father (who was deceased) and didn't care how many people he took out with him." His is an example of play stupid games win stupid prizes. The NFA is unconstitutional, yes, but it's still a federal law on the books with well defined classifications (most of the time). However, this guy isn't exactly the posterchild of neighborly kindness and well natured firearm ownership that he's being made out to be, and shouldn't be seen as a martyr to ATF overreach. There are a lot better candidates for that.

I won that one as well. I have less than $400 in both! Like you I plan on making a carriage (for each) but I'm thinking of selling both. I should be able to turn a sizeable profit.
