overestimate? Why. I grew up in Eastern Europe - it was normally forbidden for us to travel to the USSR, they knew why. You could only go there with guided tours and all-time KGB oversight. People who spent there some time studying came back with disgust, especially from Russia. You also could see them in all occupied countries (Kazakhstan, Turkmenistan etc.) behaving as occupiers and distancing themselves from the local population in everything, separate housing etc.

I am 73 and I've been studying history my entire life. An individual country is kind of like an ecological system. When you remove key parts it can lead to disaster. A good example is Mao's directive to kill all sparrows so they wouldn't eat crops in the fields. But sparrows eat insects. With no sparrows China experienced massive swarms of locust causing terrible famine and the deaths of millions of Chinese. So we see in Russia the loss of almost an entire generation of young, highly educated, technically savvy citizens. Over a million left Russia following the invasion with another half-million or so dying in Ukraine. If you don't have young men and women you won't have young families. Putin is ordering young women to leave higher education and work careers to go home and have 5-10 children. Of course modern women gave this directive a very cold response. So, we have taken a key demographic element out of Russia and this will have a serious impact for DECADES to come. This is just one example of how Russia is changing but given the time I could list 10 other keys that are decimating Russia.

In Australia, young men could direct their energies into manual labour, nose to the grindstone(figuratively), construction work, factory work or white collar work, thereby earning a wage, getting job satisfaction, being useful, offloading ones energy usefully. Also thrift with ones earnings for a dozen or more years, having protection against job hazards were, are, important. Training, learning at technical colleges are useful. Those activities used or use up ones energies and keep one out of trouble. Some hit the ground straight away with such activities, some later. Better for the brain, also, either straight away, or later. The illegal invasion of Ukraine is a very bad activity.
