I have both a GPS and telemetry tracking system. Regardless of the tracking system, it needs to be removed every day to be recharged. There's no way for me to know he was going to be lost in my own "mink proof" yard. Those microchips that most people have under the skin on their dogs or cats aren't for tracking an animal. Boon, and my other mink, are also micro chipped, but the chip is like a barcode on items at a supermarket, that are used to identify the animal at extremely close range (we're talking 2 or 3 inches AT THE MOST). They are not a tracking device, which is a very common misconception people have.

That's tough, knowing he slowly died of dehydration/starvation all alone. That would tear me up inside. It's not his fault though, it's just one of those cruel parts of life that happens by pure dumb chance.

It isn't your fault, Joseph. We can spend years telling ourselves how it could have been different, but those years are unfruitful. I grew up on a farm, very rarely when a pet went missing did we find closure. Boon was an amazing mink, an amazing friend, an amazing part of your family. No amount of circumstances will ever change that. We all love you, and we're here for you.

@@Globss mhm that's true yet you expect him to somehow predict that the mink would end up in a shed that otherwise from the outside has no access point for a mink and is usually never opened during winter or did you forget that that was mentioned? It would be different if he lost him in a field, but he didn't he got into an otherwise 100% secure shed that to anyone that thought about it you wouldn't think to check there, as well as the fact when dealing with such a quick agile animal like American mink if you lose track of them you'd check the most likely places it would be, which considering the fact he shouldn't have been able to fit in the shed means it likely would have been put as basically impossible, since they weren't aware at the time that it had been opened. Got to think about all the points. It is not like with a dog where you'd look around decide you can't see them in the open and start looking where they could hide, with mink you'd literally have to be feet from them to see them and you'd check the likely spots first and it was likely just too late by the time the shed was checked, as alongside looking after his other animals he likely would have been checking the local more likely areas he would have gone to, like any normal person would do, with an animal so quick and agile you'd never think to check a spot that otherwise has 1 no way in, and 1 no reason to be in there.

For me the most devastating part about this is that he died curled up in a bucket. Its like he knew it was his turn to get in the bucket. I just hope he went peacefully in his sleep. So sorry for your loss Joe and family.

Nice sentiments Paul. Part of me oddly rejoiced when Boon escaped, living life in the wild as a free warrior. At the same time I was sad for Joe. Now I know of his fate I am truly saddened. I just get mad thinking if it were a cat or dog missing people would've checked their sheds and garages. I'm sure the neighbor felt awful not remembering that they'd accessed their shed, and I'm hoping everyone is okay. it's like losing them a second time when they're found this way.

Way to raise responsible, respectful and well rounded children. Your family is beautiful, both human one and furry one. The love you had for Boon was real and I can tell from this video alone how epic Boon was as well as how good a parent you and your wife are to your little girls. Much respect to you and yours. I'm not an emotional guy but this kind of stuff hits me hard. Something about seeing the body and the hurt on his face made this unwatchable for me. Its just too sad for me and i know if he is anything like me he blames himself for this even if you try to convince him otherwise. Its just awful because you know it was a bad way to go slowly dying of thirst totally trapped.

I was able to hold back tears until 3:40 . Seeing Boon as a baby tore me up. I was there, seeing all of this. He does truly still live up to his name from the hymn. He was a boon to us mortals given and united our souls with heaven, the pinnacle of minkenry. I think he brought a piece of heaven down with him when he was born, and he was reunited with heaven far sooner than we would have expected. At the end of the day, while his memory will always come with sadness, I think his name will forever be a reminder to think of him with gratitude. As morbid as it may sound, I think we’ll all meet our loved ones again when we leave this physical realm, and I take comfort in that. I sometimes pause when cuddling with my cat and think to her, “When I join the afterlife, come find me, okay?” Incidentally, my cat’s name is Daffodil, and evidently the flower of her namesake is a symbol of new beginnings. She is the first pet I’ve ever had as an adult, and she makes our apartment with my boyfriend truly a home. She makes us a family. I believe one day you will see Boon again, and Washushe, and Fang, and Sherni. They are all tied to you inextricably by your love for each other, and that bond can never be broken even by death.

That’s sad. Similar thing happened in my Mother’s property in Australia. Nephew returned the mower to the garden shed and pushed it too tight to the cupboard in there. A possum used to sleep in there that could not escape. We assume the nephew forgot about the possum.

@@ds90seph Back up, Folks. My comment wasn't to disparage Joe. I commented elsewhere about how unfair and undeserved his losses have been. This one especially because of the way Boon died. Sorry but I'm not into telling myself he "went to sleep and passed from the cold.". We all know, no one more than Joe himself. We are all heartsick over it. EDIT: Someone mentioned that Joe asked his neighbors to check their sheds back when Boon escaped. I don't remember that but am sure he did, as thorough as he is. That person was saying how important it is to follow up on things even if you think they don't concern you, that if the neighbor had done so Boon would have been found. Maybe that person is right but maybe not. Maybe the neighbor did look and still missed Boon. We all know Joe is too kind to say ill of anyone and will just deal with this terrible loss.

In Joe's care, he never had to worry about when the next meal was throughout the seasons, nor did he have to worry about other bigger predators. definitely that is the wonders of any sport/job were someone works alongside an otherwise wild animal. The wild animal gets the freedom and enrichment of hunting, but gets the security of a meal, good temps and a safe space from predators, and the human gets a very instinctual hunter, friend and even family member.

I'm sorry for you loss; I hope he rests in peace and is happy on the other side. Losing a prized animal like that hurts; especially when it's one you hand raised with all your attention and care. I watched your video of raising the babies; talking to them and leading them around to follow you and your commands, I'm sure it hurts to see him gone after all that love and nurturing. It's a painful reminder that the most precious things in our life can be gone in an instant and sometimes we just don't know for how long and it's out of our control. Lots of love and best wishes for Boon; he was one of my favorites on the show.

I'm really sorry for your loss, man. I'd never heard of using mink for animal control before seeing you and Boon on KZbin, so he'll forever be the icon for the practice in my mind. Boon was a wonderful character to watch at work, and I know you put a lot of effort and love into raising him up into the fine hunter he was. I know it's small comfort, but at least what happened to him won't remain a mystery; I can't imagine the heartbreak of a beloved animal disappearing and just being gone forever, so I'm glad you got him back-even if only to bury him. I'm new to your channel saw videos of boon and then seen this video I havnt watched much yet but it made me so sad just seeing the bond you had and we can see your very sincere and care and are attached to your animals and not just using them as tools they love doing what you have them do and in return they are helping you and doing you a favor but they have the time of there lives it's a win win. Sorry for your loss. My gf and I can see and tell the hard work that goes into training your animals that some people may not realize and that training is a bond as well. R.I.P boom 😢

I'm so sorry, Joseph. This is devastating news for all involved. The way Boon passed struck deep sadness, if not terror, into my heart. I couldn't stop crying, and still can't as I write this. He was a great mink, and didn't deserve to leave this world in such cold, hungry solitude. Thank you for giving him a joyous life, a beautiful funeral, and for giving us closure.
