That was an amazing trip...I felt my heart in my throat/sadness so many times seeing those trucks off the road, and then empty shelves & long lines. As usual, film so well done, it's what you two say and how you think of things and how you talk to each other that I really like hearing. You're very real and very human, always kind. Sorry you came through Texas during a historic deep freeze! I live in Central TX and oh my goodness it was something I never ever want to go through. No water for 9 days and no water to be found, although my brother ventured out and found 2 cases of water at Lowe’s. We went one day without electricity, and went through a bunch of wood in the fireplace but you had to be right in front of the fireplace to be warm. I melted snow in the fireplace to flush toilets. Busted water lines was a major issue once we began to defrost. In fact the pumps that pumps water to our little town froze up and busted as well. My brother has ran his self ragged fixing all the elderlys busted water pipes and as of today there are 2 more homes that still has no running water due to busted pipes. Hopefully today we can find more fittings and PVC to help them out. I enjoy watching your KZbin channel, it gives me insight on my future plans to do exactly what y’all are doing except it will be myself and my teenage daughter. May God be with y’all and be Blessed

Very cool Donna! We are having a lot more fun than we expected in Texas. We were initially worried about the amount of public land(nearly none) in Texas but the state has made it a friendly state to stay overnight in. We are blessed to have our oldest daughter and son in law they have a spot for us on the ranch with full hook-ups. We did not want to travel during the pandemic with our girls. You probably made the right decision to head as far south as possible....I'm in Austin, got 8" of snow at my house and had no power or heat for 3 days. Kept warm by going back and forth from house to my truck to use the heater. Luckily I have a lifted 4x4 and was able to get around a little, although even with four wheel drive the roads around Central Texas were absolutely treacherous. I've lived here 32+ years and never seen a winter storm like this before. I wasn't a full-fledged prepper before, but I sure am now, lol.

I get off the road! DO NOT park on the shoulder go to a business or a side residential street in low speed limit area. Excellent of you to think ahead to leave the area of possible muddy dirt road, tree falling or limb breaking. "South" Padre Island I would avoid simply due to a past RV crime involving the proximity to Mexico. Having local Information and doing research is time well spent. Safe wise travels.

Thanks so much for this video. Little would you know that we are/were heading to Junction for a 3 day stop on Monday. Now I have time to reroute our trip as you let us know that the park is closed for camping. Very informative! We were at Magnolia Beach the day prioir to you and hunkered down at Goose Island State Park. It was crazy! See you on the road!

I was wondering if you had got hit with the Texas cold blast. I was hoping you had missed it. I am so so glad that your travels were safe. I couldn't believe all the wrecked vehicles. How devastating for so many. My heart goes out to all of them. Carrie's long exposure photos....So Awesome!! It has not been a very snowy winter here in Montana...and now I know why. You took the snow with you...Lol. It look forward to your video next week. Stay safe!! (FYI....I have changed my KZbin channel name from my name, Kristi Lewis to Mike and Kristi's Journey. We will be hitting the road in the next couple weeks....heading south...)

We felt like we were in Montana 😂 I kept asking locals if it usually gets this cold here. They said they have never seen anything like it in their lifetimes. Carrie has been getting back into her passion lately in Photography 📸 Thank you for your kind words and support! I hope you get to go down to Arizona and visit some of those locations we were at! Safe travels to you as well. 😀

It was bad here in Texas! Fueled by short sightedness for the past 10 to 15 years. We were very lucky and didn’t lose power. Many were not so lucky. This type of cold is nothing new. At least 3 or 4 times in the past 130 years. Humans don’t learn from past events, do we! But Texans came together to get through it! I have relatives from Amarillo to the Houston area. Most were ok thank God! Many thanks for this video! Y’all be safe out there!

My grandfather trained at Marfa AAF base which was located right next to the rest stop where people view the Marfa lights. He learned how to fly before going to the Pacific during WWII to do search and rescue. The base has been gone for many years, but the foundations and runways are still somewhat visible on Google Earth.
@oneadVANtureatatime3 жыл бұрын
Right on John! I was reading about that Airforce base when we were there. That's cool the runway is still there. I wanted to get the drone up for a better look but that wind was vicious. 😀

Thank you, Sylvia, for your kindness! We volunteered to help with the turtles but arrived after the rescue. We were happy to hear they saved so many. We carry a large amount of food and water with us or that would have been much tougher. We hope to meet you on the road as well! 😀

Texas turned out a wee bit colder than we expected. It's a good thing we were topped off with water before this storm hit or we would have been in a whole different situation. You know we have been getting snowed on in every state so we were not all that surprised.😂 I wonder if the weather would change if we drove to Florida. 🤪

Thanks for another great video. Glad you’re both safe. My wife and I are working our way through all your other videos - always great photography, drone footage, practical advice and well edited. One question - now you’ve camped in temperatures down around zero degrees Fahrenheit, can your Webasto heater keep the van warm (we’re a bit older than you, so 70 degrees Fahrenheit would be good!)? We live in Canada so I’m wondering whether the larger Evo 40 heater might be better for us. Thanks for any advice you can provide.
@oneadVANtureatatime3 жыл бұрын
Hi David. We were in -9 Fahrenheit and the van was 70 degrees inside thanks to the Webasto. We are super happy with it. Carrie turns the heater on almost every night and is currently roasting me. 😂

We have done a few truck stop showers. They are usually very nice and clean and run from 10 to 15 dollars. They do let 2 people use one shower for that same price so that works well for us. I love snow also! Congratulations on getting on the road. Let us know if you have more questions we love to answer if we can.

Wow, I follow (watch your videos) your adventures every week and I was surprised to hear that you and other van lifers were in Texas during the winter storm. I’m from Houston and we got hit hard with no electricity and water for many days. Pipes bursting right and left, people sleeping in their cars just to stay warm and almost 4 million people without electricity in the State of Texas. We know how to prepare for hurricanes but this winter blast was not in our preparedness plans. We’ll be more than ready next time. I have a couple of questions 1) how did you winterize your van? You didn’t have any problems with your pipes from what I see. 2) Have you ever gone through a storm like the one in Texas? Thanks for your response.So glad you guys were ok during this storm and can’t wait for your next video.
@oneadVANtureatatime3 жыл бұрын
Hi vicky. We did a few things knowing ahead of time we general like cooler weather. We insulated our van with 3 inches of rock wool: walls and ceiling, we build all of our plumbing inside, and we have an awesome heater. This Texas storm was unique as far as the ice that came with it for us. We have been in colder weather in Idaho, Montana, and Arizona. So far our coldest has been 9 below zero. We have gotten over a foot of snow twice now. It actually taken us 3 different heaters over the years to get the best one. Our Webasto heater hooks up to our fuel tank. Even in 9 below we can enjoy close to 80-degree temperature inside the Van. We are happy you made in through the storm ok, things get very serious when you don't have water. If you have more questions please ask, we love to be helpful.
