Boone is a member of a baseballer family. His grandfather, father, and brother all played in MLB. His father was a manager as well. His brother was mixed up in the Steroids era. He was a skinny 2nd baseman, and turned into the Hulk.

ALSO... the Catcher is doing good job of "framing the pitch". Catchers will immediately move the glove (and ball) into the Strike Zone as soon as he catches the ball. That sliding the glove back into the Strike Zone can give the illusion that the ball was caught in the Strike Zone. You would think that the Ump "knows" that the Strike Zone is OVER the plate and not in the catcher's chest, but it's always worth a try to see if the Ump is lazy enough to be fooled.

Keep in mind the camera angle is always off centered a bit too. So the "bad calls" arent as bad as they seem on camera
@gregcable3250
@gregcable3250 Жыл бұрын
I'll say it again--that square is not the strike zone. The strike zone is essentially a cube that covers the area of the plate hovering between the top of the batter's knees with the top of the cube half-way between the batter's shoulders and belt. So a ball can be a strike if it does not hit the square but is still in the area of the cube. Relatedly, the camera angle you are watching is typically far to the right of the pitcher, making it further difficult to gauge where the pitch goes.
@Fly-The-W
@Fly-The-W Жыл бұрын
But this was a horribly umped game. He was absolutely blowing calls even if you are saying the square isnt the zone. These were clearly balls
@TheLoos3Goos33
@TheLoos3Goos33 Жыл бұрын
Really? You're going to make excuses for this worthless ump? Oh it's the camera angle? Go look at his ump scorecard from that game. It's atrocious and significantly worse than any other ump. You can go back a month Yankees games and no ump even got close to how bad Laz was.

I love all these clueless people below you attacking you for being wrong or defending the ump. You never even defended the ump here. You are completely correct with everything you said. And before you meatheads attack me for defending the ump too, I will say that ump was shit and missed soooo many calls, you can tell from looking at baseball reference or umpire scoresheets. But that doesnt change the fact that the square on broadcast isnt the real strike zone
@Fly-The-W
@Fly-The-W Жыл бұрын
@@m1lkbags I do agree with that to an extent; the same game can have 2 different boxes for each broadcast so I never trust it 100%. Id say its more of a guide. I think the point is that him bringing up 'the square isn't the zone' has nothing to do with this game. So it doesn't make any sense to say it when they weren't close calls. Makes it sound like he's defending the ump.

The thing with that ump imho, and I didn't watch the whole game or anything, but if he called all those outside pitches strikes for everyone the whole game and gave the batters a bit of leeway inside then that's the game. Be consistent and don't EXPAND the zone.

Probably the 3 worst umpires in recent times: Joe West, Angel Hernandez, and Laz Diaz. West retired so only Angel and Laz remain. Angel is worse than Laz... At least Diaz's strikezone is consistently bad. Hernandez is the worst because there isn't any consistency to his shitty calls. At least with Diaz, you generally get the same bad calls over and over again.
@christophermckinney3924

One mistake i think Jomboy makes here is that the umpire is not looking where the ball is caught, he is looking where it crosses the plate. The catcher is a good 5-6 feet behind home plate. So as long as that ball breaks the plane of home plate in the strike zone it's a strike. It's deceptive on TV becaseu teh ball is going so fast they appear to eb teh same thing, but if you see it from the side angle, you'll see how far back the catcher is and that the umpire probalby has a good angle on seeing the outside corner of the plate. I don't agree with Jomboy on that. Check out the next time there is a side angle of the battter in the box from say the dugout. If a right handed pitcher appears to be close the left corner of home plate he's probably thrown a strike because the ball is crossing from right to left. Again, it's not where the catcher catches it but where the ball crosses the plate in the strike zone. That zone is only 18 inches wide by a couple of feet high, five feet or so in front of the catcher.

He's saying the umpire should be set up in the center of the plate, not the inside corner. Setting up on the inside corner means you have to look across the plate to judge the outside corner, which makes it harder. The best umpires set up in the center to get a good look at both sides of the plate

Everybody in baseball knows that Laz Diaz is one of the worst umpires in the sport. I don't think he tries to be a good umpire. Angel Hernandez and CB Bucknor are two others with the same reputation. The umpires have a very strong union and that's why they continue to stay employed.
