I enjoyed your video! The first one of yours I've seen. My local store has one copy of Boonlake left and I considered getting it if I sold Maracaibo first. I like Maracaibo a lot except for the combat system. My disappointment with that bugs me enough I don't think I want to play it anymore. What drew me to Boonlake is the number of reviewers that said they have a lot of similarities with one guy saying it's slightly better than Maracaibo so it's now going to replace it for him. That's good news for me. There's nothing like that combat system here?

No it has nothing like that. I love that mechanism, but think they made a mistake by calling it combat as it's basically a shares system.

Alongside the complaint of it being too long, a lot of reviewers have been saying it overstays its welcome and players are able to complete nearly everything. I find this to be a more important criticism than play time. What are your thoughts on those criticisms? I value your opinion because we have similar tastes. Thanks for the review, Dan!

I suppose if all players are taking a slow pace then there's every possibility you'd all get a lot done. I found that we as a group pushed forward down the lake quite hastily so this wasn't an issue.

It seems to me that you have to play this game like Maracaibo, that is constantly pushing the pace. For example we normally do 4 or 5 turns per round in Maracaibo (Hard mode).

I do have this ranked higher than Mombasa but I do like Mombasa a lot

Yeah, not sure you should be throwing colonization of Africa into the "really cool theme" category any more...(or ever, really). I'm not sure the very disconnected theme they arrived at here is the perfect answer, but I do think it's preferable. The art is kind of growing on me. If nothing else, it's different and that has a refreshing quality of it's own.

I really enjoy the colonial setting and think it lends itself to Euro games well. I do generally prefer games based on reality than fantasy/sci-fi though.

I come from a colonized country, and I find it difficult to play games in which I'm, for instance, colonizing Africa. I know some people do not care, and that is their right, but I do. This has always been an obstacle for me to approach certain titles, i.e., Maracaibo, so I am pretty happy with this theme.

The colonization issue has been noted by Alexander Pfister and I know it’s looking to be addressed with the Uprising expansion coming soon.

I just can't help but wonder who signed off on these visuals. The box art is hideous and the art on the cards...I mean...really? The art style is inconsistent and yet the art is consistently bad for me at least.
