Part 30: • Boosie: You Have 3000 ...
Part 28: • Boosie on Smacking a G...
Part 1: • Boosie on the Astrowor...
--------
In this clip, Boosie and Vlad discussed the legacy of Scarface who said he's hanging up his mic after this last tour. They talked about Scarface needing a kidney transplant and eventually getting one from his son. Boosie, who's had kidney issues in the past, said he doesn't know if he'd be able to take a kidney from his child or if he'd look elsewhere to not compromise his child later in life.
Boosie shared his thoughts on Meek Mill going to Twitter to speak about his label not paying him money he feels he's owed. Boosie explained that labels aren't writing big checks to artists unless they're doing big numbers like Drake. Boosie then pointed out that labels have to recoup money given to artists in their advance, as well as money spent promoting their album and doing music videos. To hear more, including Boosie and Vlad speaking about the benefits of a label, hit the above clip.

What a lot of people don’t understand is that The label deal is a LOAN. You gotta pay that back with record sales. That initial check when you first sign will be the amount you gotta recoup in order to be on good terms with the label.

I found this out 10yrs ago i was just wondering and kept hearing my favorites complain about they deals money etc as rappers . I stop rapping to find out why . 2yrs of research man only two out of every 100 artists deals barely satisfactory . Most artist only win off of shows and appearances unless independent or never give up most of their pub and royalties . Major label or 360 artists end up in forever debt unless they flip advancements

Scarface ‘The Diary’…to this day still puts me in that mode and state of mind I was in when it first came out. I was 15 and neck deep in this gang shyt. That entire album plays out like a movie, front to back. That opening piano track with the chopper busting at the end…classic. Devin The Dude on the hook for one of the singles before anyone knew who he was. The Diary is one of many Scarface Albums you can play through without skipping any tracks.

It’s a double edged sword, Meek was signed to multiple situations prior to Ross. The masses never heard of him until he signed to Atlantic w/Ross, so end of the day it comes down to what you want as an individual. If you want fame & clout sign to a label but if you’re in it for the long run grind it out like Currency and play the long game.

Any person who wants to effectively deal with a business has to become a business person themselves. It never ceases to amaze me how so many people act so disillusioned with major record labels. People seem to forget a label is a business designed to make money, it's not a charity or halfway house for wayward recording artists. A major label doesn't exist to make an artist's dreams come true. It exists to make money. No business designed to make profit simply gives away money. For an artist that has received major push, a label has literally spent millions of dollars of their resources, it's only logical they want to recoup that money before anyone else gets paid. That's how they stay in business. What is moral and what is natural is not always aligned, and It's only natural they want their money back first before anyone else gets paid when exerting their financial resources and business influence. And if you as an artist haven't recouped those millions spent plus a satisfactory amount of interest, then that artist is essentially in debt, which is all outlined in a contract if an artist does the smart thing and gets a lawyer to read over it before they sign, instead of simply assuming the major label designed to enrich itself has the artist's best interest in mind. A major label is a bureaucracy where the leaders are not directly connected to the artist, thus all decisions are made on purely corporate sensibility. An average independent label is like a mom and pop store, where the leadership is often directly connected to the artists, there may be some personal relationships, and better, more mutually beneficial splits between them. A major may have spent 100k on the music video, the independent may have spent 1 or 2k. Much less to recoup and more than likely, more beneficial splits. And then of course, independence is ideal, but to be completely independent and make serious money, it takes a lot of marketing know how, a lot of patience, and a lot of business acumen more so than just the creative side of music making, as having a hot song doesn't make an artist popular as much as knowing how to market oneself, which is what the resources of labels are really useful for, is putting an artist out there. But as Boosie stated, only artists that essentially reach a superstar level, are receiving hefty checks from a major. No major business is going to keep you around or pay you if your not benefiting the business or if you are not helping the business make a profit, because it is not a personal relationship, it is a business one. The sooner artists accept that simple truth about the music business, the sooner they can make better decisions for themselves in the framework of that business.

@@rekitanelson5053 well some times you don't sell. If they create ur album on their brand n label they own it. Simple as that . its very very rare to own ur masters in music. You might have to buy it back.which is huge court battle a lot of the time. A master is basically ur income. Its best to create ur brand legally before any signing. Register ur self as a brand [llc]. Then negotiate profit.timed exclusives right none permanent. Anytime they market or advertise, you profit.

The label spends millions to promote these artists and connect them with artists, producers and advertisers that they would never have connections to. Of course the label is going to want their money back plus more. When you make an investment you want to make money on it.

@@EnduroDreaming facts. Which is why artists especially young artists that start to buzz locally need to know how the business works asap. But it can be so tempting when labels be dangling that carrot in young artists faces. But that’s when artists gotta quickly consider whether they’d rather go platinum with a major and be famous but only make like 50 cent per unit sale and never own their own masters. Or sell 50,000 units independently on their own but make 5 dollars per unit and own their own music.

Remember when Chief Keef signed for 6 million back in 2012 and everyone was amazed? Looking back with the knowledge we know about this industry that was a terrible decision on both the label and the artist behalf. Especially during an era where CD’s we’re about to be extinct and digital streaming was starting to take over

If you didn’t hear the real message, ONE PERSON has the control of the music you hear on your local rap station. That’s why the music that gets popular on mainstream radio gets its reach. Listen to you radio and decide how you feel about that persons job. Are they doing us a service?

Mainstream radio has definitely lost its charm, what little it had anyway, without any relatable personalities or talented artist I'm surprised mainstream hasn't fallen the way side, cause it's way way over there by itself. Even the few talents mainstream has are still label creations made with that industry magic, luckily none of that shit spread to other platforms like talk radio, could you imagine if talk radio just became nonsensical

Being signed to a label is like having a 9 to 5 job with just a bigger pay. As a artist if you want a 100% all of profits form your work then the Best thing to do is build your own team of college educated people with degrees in marketing and business then pay them to handle all that. Or just people with experience in general. That's basically what a record label is. A lot the business record labels do can be done by your average jo with a brain
