“How can we best support people with limited incomes or resources in their metabolic psychiatry journey?”
This question was asked in our recent Q&A with Dr. Georgia Ede during our monthly live Q&A for members of The Metabolic Initiative. The full recording is now available for on-demand viewing here: membership.metabolicinitiativ...
Here are some of the other questions we covered:
1. How did you get started with using nutrition as a tool for mental illness?
2. Why do you think some people with mental illness respond better to carnivore than a classic ketogenic diet?
3. Do you recommend genetic testing to help finesse your dietary recommendations for patients? (Specifically MTHFR gene)
4. Does Dr. Ede think that excessive use of stimulants like caffeine or Adderall is a factor in the current mental health crisis?
5. Are nutrient deficiencies common in psychiatric diseases and does Dr. Ede test for nutrient deficiencies to identify this as a potential root cause?
6. What are your thoughts on supplementing with exogenous ketones for mental health, specifically in a strict carnivore diet who's never in ketosis?
7. Could you share a bit about why you stopped doing the carnivore diet after 8-9 months when you felt better than ever before?
I8. f there is an abundance of insulin in the blood, it cannot enter the brain and facilitate glucose uptake. Can you please clarify the pathology of insulin resistance in the brain relating to glucose metabolism?
Miss it live? You can watch the full recording for free by signing up for a 7-day trial on The Metabolic Initiative platform. As to the question regarding nuts and fruits...I would educate people about the high oxalate content of nuts, especially almonds. When I cut out high oxalate foods my 30 year history of fibromyalgia was gone within a few months. The issue with fruits is that the high fructose content tends to motivate us to eat more, often leading to eating other sources of sweet food. That is what fructose is biochemically designed to do for us.

I have some doubts regarding the ketogenic diet and thyroid. I have been following the diet for a while (that was the only way a could manage my insulin, hunger, weight gain and mental health issues since my perimenopause symptoms started) but I've read in some places that keto diet can decrease your thyroid hormones and that it's not recommended if you have hypothyroidism. I don't really know if this is true, and I'd like to hear from you, who know about the real data, in one of your podcast's episodes, how the keto diet can affect thyroid hormones, and the truth or myths about that. Thank you :) And thank you for all the information you share. (By the way, I read the book and I loved it!!)
