Some basics for speeding up your wifi. 1. Get as many devices as possible cabled to the Router (via a switch if necessary). Less devices on wifi mean more of the wifi pie available for the remaining devices. 2. Despite MU-MIMO, as a rule, Wifi router/access points (I'll call them AP from now on) can only talk to one connected wifi device at a time. So if its talking to your phone, its not talking to your TV at the same time. 3. Wifi is half duplex (even Wifi6/802.11.AX ) So that means your wifi AP can either talk, or it can listen, it can't do both at the same time. It hides this and point 2 by chopping between devices as quick as it can. To give the illusion of doing lots of things at the same time. 4. if you have an extender connected to your router by Wifi, note points 2/3 above. Can you see that having strong wifi, doesn't mean you will get a lot of data through the repeater? So basically, your phone asks for data from the extender, this has to stop and listen to your request, then wait for the Router to go into "listen" mode and talk to it, all this reduces bandwidth and increases latency. So as Gary says, using a wire, means more data. 5. Routers are sold via the Snakeoil method. "AC 5300", makes you think you can connect at 5300? Nope, it means it has two 5GHz bands one 2.4Ghz, and they've added together the maximum theoretical link speeds to come up with 5300..... Think about it, if a Router could really transfer 5.3Gigabits why would it have one gigabit ports (1Gb) . 6. 1Gb ethernet is full duplex, so wired devices can talk and listen at the same time. And its not generally subject to interference. 7. Move your slowest wifi devices to a separate network if you can, as I have explained above, APs can't talk and listen at the same time, so if you have a slow wifi device asking for a lot of data, the AP will be stuck talking to that device and your other devices will have to wait. If your Router has a setting called "Airtime Fairness" switch it on. (It prevents one slow device hogging the wifi pie). 8. Remember 5.0GHz is much faster then 2.4GHz, but think of them like this, 5. is a great big wide hosepipe that's 12 inches wide but only 20 feet long, if you turn the tap on it will flow a hell of a lot of water a short distance, 2.4 is a long thin hosepipe that's one inch wide and 50 feet long, it will flow much less water, but will take it a longer distance. Now imagine that your data is water. Specifics 2.4Ghz, set to 20Mhz channel width, dont be tempted by 40Mhz ..... Channels 1, 6 and 11 are the best channels to use. google is your friend if you want to know why. 5.0Ghz, set to 80Mhz channel width and enable DFS, (if you live near an airport, this might not work). Now select channels as follows, 36, and 149.... If your wifi has a "Band steering mode" turn that on, it will automatically steer devices that need a lot of data to 5.0 and slow devices to 2.4 If you have a few APs, adjust their power, if your APs and devices support Fast Roaming, they should automatically roam to the best AP and as you walk around your home seamlessly change APs. If you have multiple APs, it makes sense to turn the wifi signal strength down, so they aren't competing with each and introducing interference. Good luck

If your wifi access points support "Fast Roaming", (also known as 802.11k/r/v ) your devices will "roam" to the AP with the strongest signal. This works on my home network with 4x Access points and a number of Wifi Clients.
@micksmithson67243 жыл бұрын
@Octavio Lopez If your APs support fast roaming this will not happen and I am not a fan of Mesh Networks, at the very least a small Unify Network would be better with Controller and two APs, all wifi clients will "roam" seamlessly to the AP with strongest Wifi signal and with Band Steering enabled, devices that need a lot of bandwidth will roam to 5GHz and those that don't will roam to 2.4Ghz, as you walk away from the network, even high bandwidth devices will roam to 2.4 to try and retain signal.

a lot of powerline extenders actualy cause a lot interverence. your powerlines are not shielded in any way and the cables start acting as antenna's. so your wifi is worse and the neighbours wifi too. and any other air connection like bluetooth and gsm/3g/4g/5g or whatever. powerline devices are the worst thing to use. btw about 90% of them cause interverence.

@@porcorosso4330 actualy the way the powerline makes the connection can and on cheap devices will make the wireing act like a antenna. They are not made to send over the air but because of bad insulation and bad parts they do send interferance into the air. I am a ham opperator. There is a plan here in NL inplace that forced the main internet providers to change and call back powerline devices they provided to customers. The sad thing is that most don't know and/or care as long as a product work for them. It's just like with solar pannels. A lot of the converters are actualy sending out interferance into the airways. Any electrical product can "send" if they design it incorrectly. Your powerline that comes into your house has 50hrz or 60hrz as basis anyway. Depending on where you live. An simpel transmitter is just a few simpel parts. Even a wrong cable length could start (if not isolated enough) start to "send" in the air. I tried to keep the terms and information on a basic level. But that is the jist of it. Bad design (powerlind device) and connect that to a long wire (your electrical wireing in your home) and you create something that sends interferance. And that can actualy interfere with your own wifi, bluetooth and mobile phone. Or other products that use radio waves.

Your internet speed is determined by your ISP and not what you install between your router and/or WiFi extender. It's only your LAN's speed that should improve somewhat by doing so.. The only reason your Internet Speed may seem to be faster by installing an ethernet cable between your router and computer, and/or extender is because cable is faster than WiFi and should only improve your LAN connectivity. There are a few other setup mods you can do on your WiFi or ethernet adapter that may improve what you perceive to be faster internet, but is governed by congestion and available bandwidth.. but your ISP is still KING..!!

So funny, I went to a cpu store and told them I wanted a wifi extender BUT one that was WIRED IN with ethernet. I was told I needed an access point.
@GaryExplains2 жыл бұрын
Technically they were correct. But many Wi-Fi extenders have a wired connection as well and then you need to configure them as an AP, as I show in the video.

I don’t get it, Access Points are the way to go. I don’t even understand why wifi boosters/extenders are a thing. Yes, you have to pull an ethernet cable, not really hard to do...
@GaryExplains3 жыл бұрын
You don't get it because for you putting in an Ethernet cable isn't hard. But not everyone is like you.
@jengelenm3 жыл бұрын
100% agree. Some people choose convenience over fast speed, to each their own. What bothers me, is walking into a electronic store, and sales guys telling me boosters are the best. One 18 year old douche told me, with access points the signals will collide and give you the worse connection. 100% balony, but 90% of the public buys their crap story.

Well, how a store representative tries to sell you WiFi stuff has nothing to do with me or this video! 👍

When I moved into my present 1930's house I spent days running ethernet to anywhere I thought might be uselful. 15 years later, surprise, surprise, what with SKY tele boxes going wifi, IOT etc its now either powerline, extenders and so on or start ripping down wallboard and prising up floorboards. Thanks Gary and any idea when I'll be able to buy an enormous parabolic dish on a mast above my house or maybe a gamma ray wifi network, I'm sure my wife won't mind getting a suntan in December!

Ha Ha, Ethernet Cable, Ethernet Connector. There will be comments from the networking gods. Hint its not an RJ45 connector either.

That is totally a misconception, wrong, outright dead wrong, you are not increasing the speed of your signal, You're increasing The connectivity, and that is all.
@GaryExplains9 ай бұрын
It would have been good if you watched the whole video.
@rich18799 ай бұрын
Oh, I did watch the entire video, apparently I missed something, I'll have to rewatch it. Regardless The title of the video stated to "boost your speed of the internet" , that is NOT what you're doing, Not by a long shot. There are many manufacturers selling junk with the claim that their product will increase the speed of your internet, Total misconception/ lies from every one of them, because that's impossible.
@GaryExplains9 ай бұрын
If you are connected to the Internet via a WiFi extender then your local network will likely have a lower speed than your internet connection. By resolving the local speed issue you will access the internet faster. That is what most people worry about and/or observe. "Why is the internet so slow" is something I hear a lot. Not why is my local network slow? When in fact that is the problem. You did miss something as I said clearly in the video that this is about end to end and it can't change the speed of your connection from your provider.

... hello, sir. kk - so, i am a technological numb-skull, so please don't giggle at me (i know this is likely gonna be hard for you NOT to do). ... so, i live in an apartment complex and have no other options for internet than THEIR wi-fi - and it is a complete and utter nightmare! i believe it is part of their DISH satellite service. - can/will a booster help me get better strength in my apartment? ... if this is a complete and utter rediculous question - im sorry - as i already admitted that i am a technological numb-skull - what can I say 🤷🤷🤷 thank you much for your time ...

This is definitely a clickbait! It won't magically increase your internet speed. To get more speed, you need to give more money to your ISP!
