What I have experienced during my PhD and see with our students are mental blockades due to mental health issues (bullying by the PI, depression, everything going in a downward spiral...). Wish it was the emails or not using the right tools 🙁 There needs to be a tool to hold the PIs/professors accountable, if they already can't loose their jobs (at least in the country where I am working). Edit: but love the video!! 😊 It's probably useful for many and I generally love your advice and way you convey information!

Hello Andy, I purchased Writefull a few months ago at a cheap student price. I found it suggested on your website. I tested it proofreading my MSc thesis. It really did well, better than Grammarly. Even my examiners endorsed my thesis because I proofread it using Writefull based on their suggestion in proofreading during the oral examination. Thanks for sharing these wonderful tools.

Hi Andy, listening to your vids is like a walk down memory lane....ahhh 😄 For me, I pushed myself to write journal papers. It was a big help since I received comments from generous reviewers and because I was still in my third semester, I was able to handle rejection decisions from publishers. If at first, you don't succeed, try, try again.

On the managing risk topic, I come from engineering so my mind has always been on doing the bold and exploratory stuff first and then move backwards. But now I'm in social sciences and because harming others and making most of participants time is a huge ethical concern, such strategy is no longer optional. 😓 The good thing from these videos is that by comparison they help me having a better understanding of those differences. 🤜🏻🤛🏻❤

Hi Andy! I am not sure if you have already made a video about this, but I would love to hear some tips about how to stay up to date with new literature/papers in your research field. I find it challenging building up the knowledge of my research area (as a Master's student), while also trying to stay on top of newly published literature.

I just use the recent literature to identify the new trends of my field but I don't try to understand all of them, you will never end, there's always going to be new stuff. If you see something that you can implement very easily try to add it into your research.

Thanks Andy for another piece of great content! A quick question - when reading papers or articles, how do you avoid going down the rabbit wholes as there could be some brand new concepts as you read them? ( I found myself get lost in these endless list of new tabs I open related to these new things I read about…)

What a nice content Dr Stapleton. Very Useful for PhD Student Like us. Now the famous academic quote "Publish or Perish" should be changed to "Embrace AI or Perish". Those who will embrace these phenomenal AI tools will mostly succeed while those who deny it will be the first one to loose their jobs. They are so much better for efficiency & productivity.

Hey Andy, thanks for these great videos. Can't describe how helpful these are as a first-year PhD student. I have a question for you - "How do I stop being freaked out by the previous works?". I sometimes get caught up in the literature and can't think of a way to break them. I constantly fear that my work might be rejected because of similar recent works or others might have already done (or currently doing) the idea I am working on. Any suggestions how I can work on this?

Sometimes you just have to leave your place and find solitude like Ernest Hemingway did. One of the reasons kids from low income backgrounds don't score as well, too much chaos interference going on.

The more we rely on AI the rustier our brains become. These are powerful tools nonetheless, but we should be careful how to use them. Don't be like a bodybuilder on steroids. We should continue to improve and evolve naturally; don't waste the skills and talent you gained throughout life. I do use GPT but in a way to look for improvement and not let it do the work for me.
