We found out somewhere between 600-650hp the factory crankshaft is the weak link. We bent ours .004”, just smeared a main bearing which was very lucky it didn’t break. @@undertow2142 So many of them available, because the general thought is: Why bother? Anything the 4.3L came in, a V8 practically bolts in. So...people go with the V8. It used to be that people would drop 4.3s into old Jeeps, but even that is kind of run the path and people just go with an LS. There never will be much of a tuning market for the 4.3L, because there isn't enough people interested in supporting it. Sure, there's a few thousand people who really, _really_ like the 4.3L, but a few thousand isn't enough to build a competitive market around.

My neighbor and I both bought new 1988 S-10s when the 4.3 first showed up on dealer showrooms. His only lasted 100k miles and his friend rebuilt it and stuck a Holley 4bbl on it. Not for performance, just drivability. My 1988 ran like a champ into the 180K miles and I sold it to a buddy. He drove it for years. Those were great motors in their day. The V8 in my Silverado has been amazing. Fifteen trouble-free years and counting.

🤔 You never had to change the transmission, water pump, heater core, ignition module,new oil pump, etc..? After 200K on my 93 4.3, I could feel lower compression. It'd have slightly more power on each 3000mi fresh oil & filter change. Then get weak after the new oil had about 500 miles on it. The truck rotted away before the engine did. I'm guessing had I checked for a weak oil pump & changed it & ran 10W40 in summer instead of 5w30. Once worn, it would have gone to 300K.
@enzos9211
@enzos9211 2 ай бұрын
@michaelbrinks8089 when I swapped the oil pan I changed the oil pump because it was damaged from the impact. Replaced water pump once, ignition module, and ecu. Along with the alternator a few times. Thats expected wear and tear from daily driving it. transmission I rebuilt it three times. Third time I went with an art carr billet everything in it stage 3 meant for grand nationals with up to 1000HP obviously I wasn't making a quarter of that but I did it for longevity and the 24 inch forged wheels . 10 years later I refreshed the tranny and still going in another MC SS . I always ran 93 and full synthetic Mobil one when it was good oil back then

@michaelbrinks8089 2 ай бұрын
@@enzos9211 475K is impressive...I think the combination of warm Florida weather & regular oil & filter change using full synthetic was the key....Many people who hear of a vehicle going/lasting 500K miles. Think that means it went 500K with nothing msjor bresking. They don't realize it's engine internals only & it went through several external parts & a few transmissions. I wish I known when I was younger to replace the oil pump around 100K miles. Or when you see the oil psi is lower than norm at idle. The oil pump us still working but lower psi= isn't circulating as good. So the combination of high miles & low psi is wearing it much faster than 50K with strong psi circulation.

Dual turbos at 73 mm each and I put my alternator and my power steering pump at the 7:30 and 4:30 location underneath my turbos with a big Ron Davis radiator and heat exchanger. Made 552 hp!… but of course, I had a steel crank made and billet rods and forged pistons with a custom (my specs) Crower camshaft. Confirmed 178 mph on route nine going from Middletown to Old Saybrook, Connecticut in nine minutes and 12 seconds but the car got light and scared the hell out of me at that speed! That 4.3L V6 is probably one of the best motors GM ever made. I had one in a Chevy pick up truck.. It's a big 6 cylinder and it has a lot of power.. GM actually made a few really good 6 cylinder's over the years.. They did a 2.8L that they bumped up to a 3.2L that they used to put in the Z24 Cavilers.. That 4.3L is about as close to an 8 cylinder 5L as you can get. I had a full size 8' bed and loaded that thing up like it was a 3/4 ton Truck even though it was a half Ton truck .. I could tow with it. GM made a yearly solid motor with that 4.3L..

The 4.3L pushrod engine is hardly "bigger" than a ~3.0 L DOHC, rather it has more "empty space" inside the block corresponding to the higher displacement. Another myth is that 4 valves per cylinder allows more airflow, but a hemi head with 2 valves is the highest possible flow.

Pent roof 4-valves are geometrically equivalent to a hemi as far as valve areas are concerned, but they can use more of the bore area. So they do indeed flow better. Bigger difference however: the curtain area increases a lot faster than a 2 valve head. This allows 4-valve heads to flow better with a milder cam, which is ideal for drivability and emissions in a street car.

Cool viddy! And for once I can relate.., I have a 4.3 in my 2001 GMC Sonoma daily driver that I was lucky enough to buy (first ever financed, paid off early..,)in 2017. I have 99635 miles on the odo, & have replaced the fuel regulator/spider, starter & currently chasing down a service engine code P0401( secondary air system) that appears to require replacement of the check valves to clear the code & pass smog inspection.., having said all that the power has always been more than I needed & with today’s gas prices fuel economy is still holding up @ 15-18 city(whew..!). I love my truck. I am not going to beg, whine or blow smoke, just keep doing whatcha doing, I will continue to watch & enjoy!! Hell ya’ brother!

Mounting the turbo on a bracket bolted to the head was a slick move, takes stress off exhaust pipes. That makes a custom turbo a lot more do able. I might have to take a look at this setup again!

This was a great episode! This is like a 4.3 Sy/Ty motor on the cheap. Everyone is starting to navigate to the "Ameribarra" Vortec 4200 inline 6 because completely stock--stock bottom end, stock valve springs, hg, pistons/rods, they've been known to hold 800-850 hp which is amazing but these old 4.3 make terrific budget street motors. If I had an old S10 or S15 Jimmy, I wouldn't be so quick to throw an LS in it. I'd build up a solid bottom end on one of these 4.3, send the heads to get ported, size an appropriate turbo and let it eat. 600 streetable and reliable hp shouldn't be out of the question plus its NOT an LS!!

This is why I love boost and particularly turbos. When boost comes on, you get instant torque gains and it can carry throughout the rev range. I know this is not an exhaustive lesson on turbos, but the audience might want to know about wastegate prioritization for controlling boost. Not critical in this application, but imperative in keeping an engine from over boosting. I've also never seen anyone put the O2 sensor before the turbo. I don't think it would change much other than giving the sensor some positive pressure to fight against. Franky said he likes V6s more now because of this. The Ford Ecoboost is an OEM example of this working, but there are several OEMs that have done this. Straight 6s are bit more common, but 6 cylinders tend to be more harmonically balanced and smoother running. Turbos make a great match with that. Now to get you to like 4 cylinders more :-)

I have an 05’ Reg. Cab SWB 2wd 4.3L OE rebuild nightmare. I’ve replaced the Engine & Trans among $9k worth of other stuff. I did all the work myself. I want to get this truck into a much more throttle responsive 400hp-450+hp romper with a strong solid Hyd roller cam, a strong turbo, headers & exhaust, new worthy intake & most importantly a NEW fuel management system that actually works for this truck. The spider injection system sucks to say the least. I would & could really use some help from you guys. I’m $17k plus deep in a $4k truck (in perfect condition) and I’m so tired of failing with this project. And so is my wife. I started this driveway project in the summer of 2019 after it completely failed me one day trying to drive to work as it was my basic daily driver. Long story short, after checking everything I could without tearing down, I got nowhere. I ended up replacing everything single thing available. Some stock OEM parts I just can’t find. It fires up and idles fine from a cold start. It gets to about mid half temp then struggles & dies. I need some serious help. I’ve already bought a new truck. Now this is a special project truck & so will be the original engine & Trans which are sitting in the back/bed of this truck.

I definitely love the six-cylinder build. I want to see a six cylinder build like you’ve not done before. Maybe the 3100/3400/3800 Chevy 60° V6 is especially since I’ve always heard that for the most part they’re impossible to make power with. So, I would like to see you guys make power with them, especially with the scarcity of aftermarket parts, potentially being a problem. And with the 3800 coming from the factory with a supercharger, sometimes that could make your choices more interesting.
