This is very cool. I fear you could be running into a static pressure issue (maybe, maybe not). I'm not an expert in fluid dynamics or anything, but I've been in the 3D printing world for a few years, and there was a thread where someone was designing a part cooling fan for their printer, and it was just a little 40mm fan with a cone shaped duct on it that pointed towards the hot end. Essentially they were puzzled as to why the air was not being blown through the smaller hole in the cone shaped duct (the fan was blowing fine without the duct). If you add some fins to the cone shaped adapters you've got there (in order to guide the air), it may improve the amount of air you're able to move.
@boostedmedia5 жыл бұрын
I did some experimentation with directing the airflow more but found it only seemed to add restriction. The reduction from 120mm to 76mm doesn't seem to be enough to cause a problem with the gradient used on these ducts.

Built a system like this recently and was getting a lot of squeal from the PWM fans. Thanks for the tip!
@angryscottishidiot3 жыл бұрын
Some notes so others don not go as insane as I did: Changing the PWM frequency can stop some fans working if its too low. My fans wont turn if its under 1200. Also - those volume controls in sim hub on the ShakeIt Motors page - by default the top one for me was set to 50%. This was limiting my fan speed to 50% . I was only seeing a max of 6v on testing. I tried so many things before the realisation 6v is 50% and that slider there is set to 50%. It is like the master level so if you are getting too much of something you can tone it down a bit. Set it all to 100% to test. Then you wont cry cos your fans can barely blow out a candle. 2 days I spent with the 2 issues thinking my dodgy soldering was to blame.

Thank you so much for helping me build my first Arduino project! My wind sim turned out wonderfully thanks to you! I have only one small question/issue that I ran into: you recommend setting to 60hz to eliminate the PMW buzz, which I did. Unfortunately, I couldn't get the fans to run at anything less than (essentially) full power. There was no activity from 0-80mph, then they suddenly kicked in full blast and wouldn't stop until I dropped below 80, when they stopped completely. It took me a while tinkering with settings, but as soon as I changed the hz back to 1600 (as you recommend in the first video) my fans worked perfectly and slowed/sped up in sync with my car. Now, I'm a complete novice when it comes to electronics, so could someone maybe help me figure out why this happened? Because, in this video, the fans seemed to work perfectly even at 60hz

Purchased the tubes and ended up returning them. Tubes add quite a bit of noise. I've found good luck mounting them with mesh grids on their own. Blend in a bit more too. I also had issues with my fans "ramping" and ended up moving fan 2 to M3 port vs using 1 & 2 as mentioned in this tutorial.

One of the best fans to get are the Bgears 140mm x 140mm x 38mm. 5200 rpm CFM 308!!! 70 DB - loud as a small washing machine at max revs. But that should be expected by the wind that is generated. 2.76A... needs a 3A motor shield. Get a motor shield that takes 12V input and provide it with 12V power supply to those fans. That’s what they work with ideally. Cant buy a reducer or can’t print one? There’s 3D printer services that will print and ship it to you. Got a 4 wire fan? Google it and you can find which two wires to clip and ignore. You won’t burn anything out just by trial and error, but generally black is (-) and red is (+). If the blades are moving backwards, swap the wires from + to - . Pvc pipe will flow better than ribbed tubing and you can form it to angles with a heat gun. Hope this helps the majority or questions I saw here.

The motor shield has no reverse current protection. When slowing down, the fans generate back EMF, a reverse voltage created by the fan acting like a generator. This reverse current can and will destroy your motor driver. You need to add a battery in parallel, use a buck converter, or add a diode to prevent reverse EMF. I found out the hard way and destroyed my first board and power supply.

Good addition with the 60 Hz. I will give it a try to elminate the eeking sound. @@gregsonberlin3782 Same here! My fans wouldn't work except for when I was going like 80mph, and anything below it they would just cut out. Can anybody tell me why this is happening? lol I'm a complete novice at electronics but it seems like, when I had them set at 60 hz, the arduino simply wasn't giving the fans enough 'juice' or something. I could hear the arduino working, but the fans wouldn't turn (once again, except for when I was going above like 80). As soon as I set the Hz back to 1600-1900, the fans had full range. But in this video, he seems to get everything working perfectly even at 60Hz, so I'm not sure lol

Anyone else have issues with simhub unable to recognize the arduino uno w/ a adafruit v3 motorshield? I can see the arduino and program it as stated in the video but after doing so they arduino does not talk to sim hub

What wiring is used to extend the fan cables?
@boostedmedia2 жыл бұрын
Whatever you have around. Doesn’t really matter as long as it’s equal or thicker gauge than what’s on the fans themselves. :)

@@boostedmedia What gauge wire were the fans you used I'm buying the same ones via your link - Thanks for the quick reply and posting this DIY! love watching your videos helped me a lot in building my sim rig.

Barbie's hair is hardly moving Will? If hair spray is the reason then maybe she's not the best way to gauge airflow. As a suggestion (& I know this may cost more if you can't borrow one) use a quantitative method of measuring airflow like a airflow meter. Sorry I'm just not into subjective feedback as I've been burnt too many times. Being an Aussie I think this would only be of use to me in the winter months or if I relocated my rig to an aircon'd room. While I like that it adds immersion I just fear I'd get too hot when fans are running low or no speed. For this reason I'm considering keeping my normal fan as base cooling and then building a wind sim with bulge pumps for more noticeable stage 2 airflow. Either that or relocate my rig to an aircon'd room with weaker/quieter fans. Thanks for sharing.

I thought about using a wind gauge but figured a wind speed value is kind of useless to understand the volume of air being moved. That’s why I spent more time explaining what I was feeling after the “barbie test”.

Will can a 4 pin fan be used the same I can’t get 2 pin one in Uk out of stock

@Will, @anyone In the event that the Com Port can't be found - even after updating the drivers - what can be done to find the port for the Arduino to be seen. At the moment all I get access to is Com Port 1 in the drop down. Any ideas will be greatly appreciated. Thx.

The Adafruit motor shield looks to be long term out of stock. Does anyone know whether this will work with the branded Arduino motor shield?

wondering what you used to mount the piping to your rig ?
@boostedmedia5 жыл бұрын
The pipes came with mounts as shown in the video. Just cable tied for now until the 8020 rig comes.

Please Help!!!! I hooked up everything as directed. But my fan runs 100% with 0 speed and when I hit test it goes to zero. I’ve tried everything. Requiring every way possible. I’ve gone through the software. What could cause this?

Want to pick your brain, while I understand this helps with immersion, do you feel that 2 static fans running a consistent flow would still be a benefit, especially in the hot Aussie summers? 😅

Absolutely for cooling!

I have clicked on the links, but the board it brings up on Amazon isn’t the same it looks like you have to assemble it yourself or something? If anyone could shed some light on this it would be much appreciated. Also how does the pc talk to the board without a usb connection?

All right! This works like a freakin charm. Only problem is, the duct won't fit over the 3d printed piece. Has anyone run into this problem and can suggest a solution? BTW I made this with the Delta 120mm Fan AFB1212SHE fan (3000 rpm, 160 cfm) - wowzers! Great airflow!
