Great movie! ёлки 2 and 3 are also decent. ёлки 1 is a classic! The film teaches you alot about Russian culture for example: I never knew in Russia on new years eve you write a wish on paper and burn it and drink it within champagne to make it come true.

Great idea and set up for learning new words and expressions! I love this---can you use more American movies like the Harry Potter selection! I think we all want to learn words we can use. The Putin videos are OK too but some of the words he uses would not be part of everyday speech. The sequence you use for learning is fantastic!

Great content as always, Kristina! Learn Russian with Movies has been my primary source of study material over the last month or so. Just out of curiosity, at one point one of the leads brings up "Yakutsk Drama". Is that a unique theory of theatre in Russia, or is it just drama that happens to be from Yakutsk? Огромное спасибо :)

Sure, I understand! I'll write here my findings on some of the words and expressions I found difficult. I hope this post will be useful to other people. Да бери, бери, у меня ещё есть! The initial да is a particle used, informally, for emotional emphasis. It can be translated as "cm'on", "go on (and)" у нас запрещено распивать спиртные напитки "у нас запрещено", literaly 'with us it is forbidden' it's the Russian way of saying 'We don't allow', 'alcoholic beverages are not allowed','You're not allowed' or similar. An unexpected usage to me. распивать means here: 'to have a drink together with someone else' ловко ты с ней! ловко меанс 'adroitly, craftily, cunningly, clevery'. So the whole expression word-for-word translated into: 'smoothly you with her!' or, perhaps, 'that was smooth of you with her!' I believe this one of the situations where Russian shows its penchant for dropping verbs altogether. I suspect с нею is also possible, but probably sounds too literary for this context. Якутский драматический. A reference to the якутский драматический театр. Perhaps obvious to Russians but puzzling to me, in part because of the succinctness and unexpectedness of the utterance, in part because I'd never heard of a 'drama(tic) theatre' in English or of a 'teatro drammatico' in Italian. Also in this case, no verbs, no 'theatre', no 'I attended', nothing. Чё в Питер? Чё is informal for что, and in this case it means почему: 'why to Peterburg?' Again, no verb was deemed necessary. Other examples of 'что' used with the meaning 'почему': что же ты не едешь? Why on earth you're not going? что ты не ложишься спать? - why aren't you going to bed? что же ты молчала? - why didn't you say anything? А что так? How come?, why so?, why is that? Накосячил? (Did you) mess up? накосячить (perf.) / косячить (imperf.) is an informal neologism meaning 'to make lots of mistakes, to do something poorly'. The verb is constructed from the noun косяк, which in turn is derived from the adjective косой 'skew, oblique'. The word косяк has several standard meanings (*) unrelated to накосячить but, according to Wikislovar', it also has the slang meaning of 'mistake' (most dictionaries don't report this meaning). (*) Other meanings of косяк: door frame; flock/herd/school (of fish); joint (cigarette containing marijuana) пашу как трактор From пахать, literaly 'to plough' and by extension 'to work hard, to toil, to sweat one's guts out'. I'm not sure how common the 'как трактор' is; judging by google, it's moderately common, so it's not an invention for this film, although the more traditional forms seem to be пахать как лошадь / как конь А у неё потом телефон... Раз, и батарейка садится 'раз' in this case don't mean 'once' but it's a simple onomatopoeic particle similar to Bam!/Bang! In any case I don't understand how this sentence is connected with what was said before or what the other guy says later. He works like a dog, and then her phone's battery goes dead. What? А то... otherwise... (an synonym to иначе) задержаться to stay late (eg at work); to be held up (eg at work) Ой, вот только не надо 'Oh, just don't!' It's not something I could realistically understand 'in the wild'. Потише можно? As usual with comparatives, the по- indicates 'a little': litt.: is it possible [to be] a little more quiet? As usually no verb, no пожалуйста, nothing. про рай в шалаше рассказышать A шалаш is a kind of hut, perhaps made of tree branches or straw, made as a temporary shelter. Etymologically it's from Turkish languages. The full expression is с милым рай и в шалаше meaning 'love and personal happiness are more important than material abundance and comfort' Да девушкам нужно чтобы мы тупо были рядом The first да is, again, just for emphasis, perhaps it could be translated with a filler word such as "Y'know" тупо in general means 'dully, stupidly' (from тупой - blunt, dull, stupid) Wikislovar', but not any of my other dictionaries (and I have some good ones!), reports as 'colloquial' the meaning ' незамысловато, просто , that is 'plainly, simply' In general the dialogue is very difficult also because of its extreme terseness, informal or slang expression and little context. Do Russians really speak and behave like that with strangers or it's just this film? What happened to good manners? :)

I'm learning some unstated pronunciation facts. к девушке: к before д becomes voiced like г. щ seems to be nearly always be pronounced the same as ш. If not so, what are the rules on that? Thanks!

Why unstated? Russian pronunciation follows very strict rules, ones you know them, you can easily read any Russian word. In addition to devoicing in Russian pronunciation, we also have the reverse phenomenon - voicing. Voicing occurs when a voiceless consonant (к) is in front of a voiced consonant (д). In this position the voiceless consonant (к) will be pronounced like its voiced counterpart (г).

The difference between then letters is the pitch with the higher-pitch one pulling the lips back and perhaps a slight difference in tongue placement. The deeper pitch almost puckers the lips forward like for a kiss
