I recently bought 2 58s used from a guy locally who was offing a bunch of karaoke gear for 50 bucks. I'm about 90% sure they're both real Shures but they're slightly different between the two of them. No huge disparities like in this video. They both sound the same, both weight the same, and the capsules are the same. The grilles are slightly different though. One is more matte and the other is shiny. And the one which is shiny is also just has a darker color to it. It seems a lot older than the other. I know that 58s haven't changed like...at all since they were made, right? Are slight aesthetic differences like that something to be concerened about? And I do mean SLIGHT. I love how they both sound, I've always preferred my voice through 58s, even compared to other more expensive mics. They're both the sturdy bulletproof Shure quality we all know and love. I've used my fair share of 58s on stages. But I guess I never really delved into them too deep because well...they're so common. A 58 always seemed like a 58 to me. But this video has me curious about mine. And even if one or even both of mine WERE fake, they're pretty dang excellent and I definitely will continue using them. If a company figured out how to counterfeit a mic as good as this, I wanna know what company it is because they would give Shure a run for their money. Anyway, yeah. TLDR; my two 58s have the slightest color and grille differences but otherwise are identical and I dont know what that's about.

Bought a counterfeit SM58 once in Russia. It was heavy enough, very-well built, but had a round hole at the bottom and a sticker. The sound quality was cheap but it was working. The little store I was buying it from vanished when I went back to return it:) Sent it to Shure in Germany, they told me it's a fake one and kept it:) The end.
@stuffnuns4 жыл бұрын
This does make one appreciate the engineering and build quality of the Shure beast. They are tanks, so friggin’ reliable, that we tend to take it for granted that they will work, even after you drop it, or the mic stand falls over.

I've seen a few similar videos, this was the clearest. Another thing that is hard to illustrate is just how durable these mics are. I recently put back into service an SM-57 that I bought 40 years ago and had been sitting in a file cabinet. It's still an awesome sounding mic. Oddly enough I think I paid more for it in 1977 than they cost now.

If you want a mic like the SM58 but can't afford it, please go get the Behringer xm8500. If you know where to look, you can get one for around $25. It pushes a bit in the mid-range, but it's a fantastic mic from a well-known company. If you need a starter mic, this is the one to get.

I bought a fake Beta 58a a few years ago and for some odd reason it sounded good.. actually still does. I would not say it's the same quality as a real one, the grill is not the same quality, it is lighter and there's a bit more noise while handling it.. however the sound is pretty good so i'd say for the price it's a good beginners mic... however.. would I buy one again, no. Reasons: 1. There are much better quality cheap mics available.. so on a budget i'd probably always go for the the t.bone MB85 Beta from Thomann. Price is really good, especially if you're ordering something more from them, you pay the same for shipping. 2. You never know what quality the fake ones are, and more often than not they're crap. I found a Shure sm58 going through some stuff that just somehow ended up in my rehersal space and i was pretty sure it was a fake so i checked this video.. some things looked different and "more legit" on this particular one.. but now i'm sure it's a fake.. yet to plug it in and try it, although, i might just throw it out... well maybe if it works ok i can scratch fake into it and give it to some young guys who need a mic.

You missed looking down the barrel to the transformer. The light weight fake is unlikely to contain the transformer or the low DC resistance out of the transformer. A real 58, if I remember correctly has a DC resistance somewhere near 30 ohms, where fake ones are much higher..

Also , there are a lot of Counterfeit microphones at pawn shops across the country. Many of these pawn shops don’t know are care weather or not it is a real or fake microphone. They want to get as much money on the sale as possible. It’s so bad, I’ve seen a counterfeit microphone at Guitar Center. Once they realize it was a fake they took it down. The best advice that I can give is only by from a Good retailer and NEW ONLY.
