Kids, first of all, sorry for my English. This mic is absolutely fantastic-it’s like a monster! I record hip-hop vocals, trap, and drill, and I’m a big fan of the Migos sound: bright, crispy, strong vocals with a touch of mumble. My situation: I don’t have a well-treated room. I use a homemade vocal booth (1.1m x 1.1m x 2.1m) fully treated with 7cm thick pyramid foam and bass traps in front of the singer. It’s a "compact dead space" for vocals. My voice is dark with a strong low end. I tried the AT4050 in my vocal booth, but it gave me a muddy, boomy sound. I also tried the SM7B paired with a Cloudlifter, but I still got the same muddy and boomy results. After that, I decided to buy the RE27 N/D. Initially, I was considering the RE20, but after watching an Italian guy on KZbin and Booth Junkie, I made up my mind. What I need: Bright, crispy vocals with controlled low-end and no proximity effect. The RE27 N/D, plugged directly into my UAD Apollo, delivered exactly that. For my setup, this mic is absolutely amazing.

I was watching your video, since I also have the dlz, but I saw that you have a sony remote, I assume you have a Sony HXR-NX5U, and that's exactly what I have.

Their both very nice microphones. The WA87 is an excellent copy of the U87 style mic with a Transformer. The 103 is cleaner being transformerless so that’s why it’s known for sibilance at times. Mike can make any microphone sound great.. 👍

Regarding residual lawnmower noise and such while vocal recording... its not actually all that big of a deal if you have done a decent job of soundproofing your space. If its only low end "rumble" that's left from that lawnmower when it reaches your mic, the hi pass filter on your mic is a great place to start.. There is significant low end rumble in my building at times (neighboring bands) and also things like road noise just outside, and the occasional train passing by about a 100 yards away. To deal with this, I employ a couple techniques... First: Maximize the signal to noise ratio by getting "the talent" up close to the microphone. This generally gives a full rich sound to the voice and makes the room and background noise LESS of an issue because you won't need to be boosting the noise floor as much just to get a decent recording level. Second: Aggressive filtering below 100hz.. even possibly a little higher. My mic doesn't have a filter on it, but my preamp has a sweepable filter knob that I run at 100 or so hz. After that I have a couple more stages of filtering before reaching my soundcard (my tube eq has a hi pass switch, and my distressor has hi pass switch too.. I always keep both engaged) I NEVER feel like my vocal recordings are lacking low end unless the talent has moved too far off of the sweet spot on the mic. I do music and normally its required to reduce the bass frequencies even further while mixing. The raw vocals that are recorded thru this chain sound great acapella. Why would I filter low end 3x before getting to the computer? Because of the filter slope... A filter set at 100hz will normally only START to roll off the bass at 100hz, but will still allow a reduced amount of lower frequencies to get through. By using a few stages of filtering, its making that slope much steeper reducing more and more rumble. Its easy to put a steep slope later in software, but I use hardware before the converter as I don't want that rumble to be a printed onto the recorded file. I have an 8x10 room (booth) that I did my best to soundproof, then I added as much porous absorption as I could fit in there / afford. There is still a fair bit of exposed drywall in the room but its actually super dead. Also, I did find that using auralex basstraps from floor to ceiling in the two corners just behind where the talent stands really reduced low mid ringing in the room.

RE20 sounds so much better on your voice. The low end is fuller and richer, yet overall your voice sound crisper, less boxy, less honky, with a bit of sparkle.

Phantastic review. Thanks a lot. The Pure Tube sounds so smooth and polished. Preferred it to all compared mics in your test. It‘s the only one that doesn‘t need any EQ to my ears. Perfectly tamed high and low frequencies. Very pleasing to the ears.

I bought a tritonaudio Fethead lately and really like it BUT the sounds more Boosted meaning gain are high compare it with out the feathead. The thing is when started recording Singing the Base we’re not boosted it kinda Thin vocals. But it sounds clear and Not robust sounds. So Unfortunately I return it. 😢. I am using YamahaAG03 usb console mixer with Shure Sm7b. For music livestream in KZbin. My question any advice which kind of Fethead or cloudlifter that considered you is the best for this Sm7b? Thank you and im watching your contents. Happy holiday merry Xmas 🎉❤Germany

Thanks for pointing out the importance of placing the mic above your mouth, not below your nose. So many have their Shure's plopped right under their nose and once you hear the nasal sounds from that placement it can't be unheard. Humans of earth, it's called vocal recording, not nasal recording, for a reason.

Much appreciated! I’m new and just getting started and haven’t hooked up anything yet, so this was very helpful, indeed. I’ve purchased a Rode NT1 5th Gen mic, Focusrite Scarlett Solo 3rd Gen interface, and some Sennheiser HD280 Pro headphones, and a Gator Frameworks weighted mic stand/boom. I don’t have monitors/speakers though. I was planning to try everything on my laptop initially. I think I have a perfect, very small, walk-in closet that might work for a studio, so I’ll definitely check out your soundproofing/absorption videos! The more I research VO, I’m finding it can feel a little overwhelming initially, so trying to take it slowly and a step at a time. I’m retired from one career, and have a very flexible second freelance gig, so I’ve wanted to try VO for awhile. Is Reaper your top recommendation for DAW? Any thoughts on the Rode Connect DAW? Thanks again!
