So far I have 3 pairs of Thursdays (2 Dukes, 1 Scout), 2 pairs of Grant Stone (Cap Toe and Diesel), 1 pair of Parkhursts (Niagara), 1 pair of Meermin Chelseas, and just got my first pair of Vibergs (2030). I feel compelled to give my first ever comments on one of your vids. Great content as usual btw😊. My boot journey started with Western cowboy boots, morphed into lace up boots soon thereafter. This all began a few years ago mind you (I’m now 57yrs young). I went from Ariat to Lucchese. Then I went from finding a $5 pair of Clark’s Bushacre 2 at a thrift store to buying pair of Timberland Earthkeepers to Thursday Captains (suede) to Thorogood 8” crazy horse leather moc toe to Red Wing Iron Rangers and Blacksmiths to trying some Grant Stone Brass boots and even Alden Indy’s. And through this journey I came to some basic understandings and what I personally enjoy. I like the look, fit and feel of certain ones and the ones I ended up with are : Two pairs of Clark’s desert boots (a third pair soon 😅). I love the overall silhouette of the classic chukka and it’s so easy to wear and are very versatile and comfortable. Thorogood 8” Mocs. My main working pair when I’m in the warehouse at my job. I love the fit and feel of the wedge soles. Also enjoy the secure snug feel of the 8” Thursday Captains in dark olive suede. A very comfortable and easy to compliment my typical casual outfits. The almond toe shape isn’t my favorite when looking down on these but the profile is sweet and I love the color. Red Wing Blacksmiths. Cooper rough n tough leather. Sometimes I wear them and at this point are broken-in well, but sometimes think I may sell them as I tend to wear others much more often. I loved the Alden Indy’s but will wait to find a nice used pair and save money. As for western boots, I kept some and those I did ended up being more the Ariats and boot barn brand (Moonshine Spirit). The bottom line (pun intended) is that my journey taught me that I enjoy modest priced boots (except the Alden’s), and I guess I’m that odd person who didn’t end up looking down on stuff like Clark’s and even though they certainly aren’t made as sturdy and with all the best components, etc., they work for me great. I wouldn’t mind one day trying the Oak Street trench boot, those have maybe the best profile ever in a service style 😊 Anyway, just some of my experience. Your mileage will vary ✌️

Another home run (or perhaps a SIX, in Teik's world) video for this channel. Exceptional communication skills and so enjoyable to watch and hear. I'm looking forward to the remaining parts in this series. The Thursday Captain was my first boot of this type, and a gateway boot it was! Gave me the confidence and the understanding to move into other brands.

I think I crossed the 50 pair mark sometime last year, and Thursday captains were right in the first three. I don't wear anything for more than a couple days in a row, but the captains always feel really good - like I've been wearing them for a month. I've moved on to different style choices, but I still can't part with them. Thanks for talking about this.

One thing not mentioned but relevant to a new boot buyer is that Thursday has a generous and easy return policy. Because sizing, style preference, and leather choice can be a challenge for someone new, being able to make a return easily and without penalty is important.

This is great advice. I always suggest to people new to footwear that they not spend much on their first pair to see if they like it. Thursdays are not only stylish, but also perfect as a first opportunity to check boots out (or even as a place to stop).

Just to share some sizing perspective: I have a 9.5 4E true size but wear a 10 wide in Thursdays. I can squeak into a 10.5D in some models but it isn't ideal. Sizing up in a D seems to work fine in sneakers for me, not so much with boots. Most of my sneakers are 9.5 2/4E New Balance for scale.

While I did start with the same Thursday captains, I feel it's best to start off with a higher end model such as GS etc because now I hardly wear the Thursdays at all. There is a night and day difference in the quality of leather and construction when you spend the extra 120-150 USD which is well worth it.
@cheekibreeki9155 Жыл бұрын
I do agree with that, but I also have to acknowledge that it's the sub 200 to 200 dollar boots that changed my mind on how much money spent on a boot is too much money. Today you buy a Thursday Captain and you start asking yourself if there is more to this whole boot thing. Tomorrow, you're camping Oak Street Bootmakers for a discount so that their 500+ boots would go down to 360 ish.
@johnathanblack8894 Жыл бұрын
While I agree with the sentiment. It's similar in watches. Everyone says start with a Seiko, and then move up the ranks to Oris, Breitling, Omega, Grand Seiko, and then Rolex, JLC, then again to Audemars Piguet, and Patek. Most people until they are sure they are going to dive into automatic watches, can't think of spending more than $500 on an outdated, piece of awesome technology. So Seiko and Thursday, play an amazing role in getting people into the hobby. It's nice to see a watchbox with a Rolex and an SKX007. It also is nice to see a beat up pair of Thursdays, alongside Truman, Nicks, or Vibergs. Additionally, some people don't ever climb the tiers and enjoy the Seiko and Thursdays for life!! Enjoy whatever watches and boots you are wearing, and get out and live life with them!!

Undervalued gem of the captain lineup with the Horween CXL in natural, the only non Thursday in house leather, otherwise have to go for the vanguard line for $65 bucks and slightly different style or other brands nearly double the price. It's one of the lighter leathers so wont be for everyone although most other higher prices brands offer this same color/leather. Also weirdly on the Thursday website this colour doesn't show up well as an option as first have to click any of the "classic" line up before this natural option shows up.

@chris11211 Жыл бұрын
Sure. The one thing about Thursdays is that it is "cheap". When your pair arrives you must get a flashlight with you and scrutinize every inch of stitching for a few minutes - don't let them get away with a lazy workers occasional stitching error, and exchange if something is incomplete or wrong with the constriction. When it comes to sizing, ideally, you must have the ball of your foot aligned with the widest part of the boot so that it can flex correctly, and because leather is unforgiving when sizing is off. Watch a video on how to use a Brannock device before buying. And with care, you must buy a pair of cheap cedar shoe tree as insurance to keep the shoe stable, and you must buy a horsehair brush and clean either after every wear, or at max 3-5 days of wear to avoid cracking of the leather.

I'm always struck by the (mainly) US attitude that your boots should be as rugged as possible and capable of surviving anything. All this does is make your boots expensive, stiff, heavy ,with a long break in and often makes them less versatile if you want to wear them in dressier environments. Maybe it's the same attitude that makes people buy Hummers and other overly rugged off roaders even though they live in towns and cities and have soft lifestyles. I own loads of boot brands but I still wear my (many) Thursday boots the most and I suspect for most people they are easily rugged enough and usually a huge upgrade on the sneakers that are the staple footwear of much of the populations of western countries..
@Tyradius Жыл бұрын
This is mostly because the Pacific Northwest has a lot of forestry workers. We are the flanel and blue jeans with boots lumberjacks with an axe or chainsaw on the shoulder people. 😂 The boots have to be rugged. Nicks, Whites, JK, Franks and more are all in Washington State.
@UnknownUser-rb9pd Жыл бұрын
@@Tyradius That makes sense if you're the small subset of the population that is involved in forestry and similar jobs in the field itself. And it will still be a relatively small percentage, even in the PNW compared to the total number of workers in the thousands of other occupations in the region. Plus I assume most of those workers will buy the more work orientated boots by these brands with safety features like protected toe caps. My comment though was mainly aimed at the people who buy the "heritage" boots as fashion items. I understand why people like well made/built stuff but there's a point where the disadvantages of rugged and heavy make everyday use a bit silly but I suppose we all have our own personal view of how far is silly.
@Tyradius Жыл бұрын
@@UnknownUser-rb9pd I suppose that's just Goodyear stitched footwear in general, the difference is thickness of leather. Even quality dress shoes are made that way, just thinner more supple leathers.
@UnknownUser-rb9pd Жыл бұрын
@@Tyradius It's also the number of leather layers under the foot which affects stiffness and the overall weight of the boots. As well as owning American style boots from Grant Stone Red Wings, Viberg, Chippewa etc. I also own quite a few, reasonably high end boots from brands such as Trickers, Crockett and Jones and Cheaney and the difference between them and cheaper brands is in the leather quality and selection and refinement rather than making the boots more rugged and tougher than the cheaper brands. The cost is the same as Nicks and Whites boots but the approach is very different. It's the difference between making a high end product and the American approach in the boot world of making a bullet proof product with the disadvantages mentioned previously. I would argue that only a few people working in specific areas need the latter and if you are going to spend that sort of money, spending the money on a more refined boot would make more sense for most people given their lifestyles.
