This one is an icon! The Red Wing 875 Classic Moc Toe Workboot in Oro-Legacy leather. They may be popular as a hipster boot, but they are also plenty tough and plenty versatile. But are they worth the price?

Who Am I?
I am a Management Consultant in real life but in my Bootlosophy channel, I make videos about boots and all things boot related. This channel posts reviews of boots, unboxing of new boots, and follow up reviews, and in doing so, may explore the philosophy of the brands from time to time!
I have owned boots for decades, but to be honest I have owned them as functional pieces of footwear. It wasn't until early 2020 when COVID struck that I started online shopping boots to an obsessive degree. I love the aesthetic of boots and I love finding out more about how they are made. I now own an insane number of boots, and one day I may sell some of them (just not right now).

19:57 I’m bummed that Grayle has now gone away. That was so helpful and exposed me to all sorts of brands and models that I would’ve otherwise never considered on this heritage footwear journey. It would’ve been open to a patron for it if site maintenance or algorithm rental costs had been a barrier. I took screenshots of the recommended sizing for boots I will most likely consider, but now I can’t pull it up anymore for things like Red Wing Moc Toes that I’ve changed my mind on.

Brilliant presentation. History of the company, knowledge of the boot's construction, knowledge of the sole's manufacture (i have a secondhand pair of 8138's and still find myself hefting the weight of the sole, it really is dense) and, most importantly, why maintenance is important and how to maintain. Excellent review, thorough overview and good history. As far as comfort, I use a thin insole from Red Wing, which should only be used AFTER break in period so the leather and cork are customized to your feet. I live in Minneapolis, less than an hour from Red Wing, MN, and go to the flagship store and basement surplus sale area every few months. Your sizing advice is solid. I would also recommend everyone get sized at a Red Wing store, and to buy them there, if you are near one. Their fit scanner is state of the art. If not, measure on Brannock device and for 23 last, go down 1/2 size from Brannock measurement. For 8 last (Iron Ranger, Beckman, Blacksmith, Rover, etc), go down full size from Brannock measurement.

Iron Workers/Steel Walkers, Roofers and Flatbed Truckers/Steel Haulers all particularly favor wedge soles, not only for the comfort, but for the lack of a heel stack catching on stuff causing potentially deadly falls. The lag of lugs not holding rocks & mud is a huge plus also!

After 6 or 7 years and three resoles, I would say these are definitely worth the money. A couple thoughts that I haven’t heard anyone mention: 1. They do mold to your feet and the wedge sole supports the mid foot and that feels good. In my experience that makes them very comfortable for semi-stationary tasks (standing around, working on a concrete floor etc.) but not very good for long walks. They feel clunky on long walks and my feet get sore and tired whenever I try. 2. The women’s version is not at all the same. My wife’s moctoes have a cushy insole, the wedge sole seems to be made from a different blown rubber and most importantly, the stitching quality is poor and tearing out at the toe after about a year of use. I have serious doubts that they are made at the same factory as the men’s moctoes.

Teik I've also bought these 875's from the Red Wing store and I did buy a full size down from brannok and a width up (I'm a 8.5E brannok and I bought 7.5EE). I did this after testing about 5 or 6 moc toes in different sizes and leathers and even some sizes with extra insoles. For my foot, sizing like this made the boots almost perfect. I had almost 0 break in, I only felt light pressure on my pinky toes the first 3 hours of wear and after that the boots were prefect. Even more then that, out of all my collection (2 Nicks, 3 Grant Stone's and a Parkhurst) these are by far my most comfortable boots. They feel like a leather sock with good arch support. The stitch between the vamp and quarters that was bothering you on the arch for me feels like a rib to reinforce the arch support. I find it a bit ironical that my cheapest boot has the best arch support and it is the most comfortable.

Thank you for the review! Super informative! I have a quick question about sizing on these My Brannock size is a 9.5, on the cusp of an E width. I also got my foot scanned at the New Balance store and my foot came up as a 9.5E. I purchased a size 8.5E in the 875 moc toe. I wear size 8.5E in the New Balance 990v5 and 990v6 (8.5E fits perfect in these). Did I make the right choice? I'm not too concerned about the width, since I know the leather gives on the width over time and I got an E size. But will be length be good? Do these boots run long enough to where a full size down will be good on the length? I know these run large, so sizing down is generally recommended. I know that everyone's feet are different, but just a generalized opinion would be appreciated. Thank you!

First time ever I hear from anyone the same experience I’ve had on sizing, they definitely look chonkier than the iron ranger but they do feel tighter on the toes, I am not sure about the sizing, i keep the theory that perhaps if I had gone half down from iron rangers in length and one or two up in width maybe they’d feel better… guess we will never know cause I won’t buy them again 🤷🏻‍♂️ anyway, they do feel alright, not unwearably tight (like thursdays). Hi Teik! I measure a 9.5D, very close to an E but still within a D, on a Brannock device. Like you I bought these 1/2 size smaller than my Brannock size. The length is fine but the boot is pretty tight in the toe box. I'm considering going true to size or 1/2 size smaller but in EE width. In your video you mentioned these being a little snug as well and not as comfortable as the iron rangers in the same size. Are you 875s any more comfortable after breaking them in and with more wear? Did they stretch width wise to be comfortable enough for you to buy these again in the same size? Thank you in advance.
@Bootlosophy
@Bootlosophy Жыл бұрын
They are more comfortable now. I think the moc toe stitching does “stiffen” the vamp/toe box more than the Iron Rangers and relaxes after break in. I’m not sure I’d go TTS though, maybe just try an E?

I've just bought these exact same boots today and also an Iron Ranger in roughout leather (8083) a couple of weeks ago and I can attest to the difference in fit. I am an 8D-US in sneaker size and wasn't sure about how these will fit so I went to the store and fit them personally just to make sure I wasn't ordering the wrong size. The Iron Ranger was easy, I just went 1 size lower, 7D-US, and was so perfect, there was not even a break-in. Maybe because it has a really soft roughout leather? For the 875, the best fit was a 7.5E-US. I doubt they'll be as easy as the Iron Rangers because while I can feel the roominess of the toebox, it is the arch that worries me. It does dig in even though these are a half-size/width larger. I'm thinking of using an orthopedic insole since there is room inside now, or maybe a really thick wool sock.

First off, I love the thorough review. I absolutely agree whole heartedly with everything that you said! I have been debating the Brass Boot in Saddle Tan Veg. I've really only known Red Wing(multiple last 23 and last 8 boots), Parkhurst, and Nick's so far. Nick's HNW is by far my most comfortable fit! How if you don't mind me asking does the Brass Boot compare to the Red Wing moc toe? It really looks like a comfortable last. My all time favorite boot, while most call it ugly, to me it has a certain ugly charm was a Munson lasted service boot I had from Chippewa. Unfortunately it was my first heritage boot and I used it as a chore and work boot and the gemming and insole eventually gave out. 7 years of every other day wear, so I got my moneys worth. It wasn't worth investing in replacing the welt, gemming, and insole when the upper was getting towards the end of life too. For me that was the best comfort even if the boot itself wasn't built the greatest. I am wondering how the Brass Boot might be in comparison to that?
@Bootlosophy
@Bootlosophy Жыл бұрын
The Brass boot was a LOT easier break in than my 875’s, to the extent that the only real break in was to get the solid sole to bend before some slight heel slip stopped. In the waxy commander, the uppers are more supple than the Oro-legacy. A lot of people say while sturdy, these are not real work boots. I think if your work involves heavy contact of your feet, kicking stuff and kneeling on your toes etc, it’s probably not as sturdy as RW but otherwise I think people underestimate its sturdiness. If you’re in say, a factory or workshop I reckon it’ll be fine. I use mine as an outdoor boot - home garden and landscaping, hikes in rough bush - and they stand up well. Hope that helps.
@Vultain

@@Bootlosophy It does very much help, thank you! I have been hoping for Natural Minerva or the Bison to possibly crop up in the Brass Boot. We shall see, I don't mind being patient. I do own two Parkhurst but I almost wish I went true to size when purchasing them. I took my normal size in Nick's, Red Wing, as per recommended and I struggle past 6 hours on my feet. I think it might be the lower in-step I heard you or someone else mention. I'm a 12D taking my longest heel to ball, and am an anomaly in the sense my feet are both right on the line for 11.5D heel to toe both feet, moderate in-step on both feet, and flat footed(genetically not fallen arches). Left foot is a C/D borderline on volume, and the right foot is a D/E on volume. I messaged Grant Stone, and Wyatt himself replied and he was recommending to actually go with the 11E vs my standard 11.5D I tend to take. Given your reviews I want to say thank you. It is very interesting that the flex point on the boot stays just about the same when you half size down and go up a width given the sizing. I very much have appreciated your knowledge and resources and just wanted to say to keep up the good work! 👍 In return, I do live in the Pacific Northwest Boot capital of the world minus Wesco. Nick's, White's, JK Boots, and Frank's are all within a half an hour or so of me. If there is anything I can ever do in return or you are curious in regards to any of them let me know. I'm on a first name basis with a lot of the guys down at Nick's, it's nice to support local, but I do like some variety every now and then too. As you said given the quality and mission behind Grant Stone and these other companies I very much appreciate the lasts and build quality they have designed. As for Nick's? Great boots, terribly long build times but well worth the wait! A bit different from White's though, and I believe it just depends what it is you are going for. Having handled it in person I will say Wickett and Craig Oiled Latigo leather has been my favorite so far. It is a stiff leather, but molds go your feet like no other. Even a year down the road I still feel it continue to break in. The natural double stuff is not near as firm of a temper. More on the medium side I would say. Out of curiosity do you have any experience with Shinki Horshide? That has been the one leather that I have as of yet to see in person, and I was wondering how both the fit and feel overall happens to be? Thank you again for the reply. My apologies for going a bit in-depth myself. It is just a rare opportunity to get to talk to someone more knowledgeable than myself and get some answers. It's not always fun to sit on the fence waiting for a purchase but when we all deal with sometimes $700+ purchases it pays to know what you are getting vs buying blind if you can avoid it.

I don't find that to be true. I'm a 10.5 and a 9.5E is what I ended up chosing. I have room for thicker socks too if it's cold out. My true size would have left me floating in the boots.

I never had an issue with breaking in Red Wings either. Maybe it’s 30 + years of playing ice hockey barefoot 🤷🏼‍♂️

I would hate to be you when you get up everyday and look at your boots and try to decide which pair to wear. What a nightmare... lol - thx for the videos.

I want these, but still unsure about sizing. I’m a 9D in IR and 9.5D in 1907. Most likely I’m a 9D in these as well, but I’d rather try these on before I pick them up.

ALWAYS try on first if you can. With direct to consumer brands that’s hard to do, but RW have stores if you live in the US, not so much for us outside US

There’s one about an hour away from me in Amsterdam. Ten pairs in, I’ve never visited 😄. Once you know your size in the 8 last it’s pretty easy to accumulate a nice collection of IRs, Beckmans and Merchants some of which are impossible to find now. I’m not super keen on starting a moc toe collection, but the 1907 and 875 are just too nice not to be had. Fortunately the 875 will still be around in ten years from now.

In my experience the 1907's are uncomparable to either the IR's or the 23 last Moc toes. The 1907's seem like the modern day version of the Heritage line in which case I would buy them true to size. I'm not sure which last the 1907's are made from but I know they are completely different than the other Moc toes.

I’d say 9D also! I own several pairs of both Mocs and IR both fit great, and both are the same size 10D

Sizing, they are simply to narrow. I am 11.5 on Brannock. I have 9875 in size 10.5 EE, BUT with extra 10.5 EE insole from other 875 glued on top original insole. (like insert, but better quality and 5mm thick) So now they are perfect, but now insole is 10 mm thick, otherwise without extra sole they are too big. And 10EE are to short. So, no more Red Wing MocToe's for me.

If you have big feet like me you certainly wouldn't want to wear these with overly skinny jeans. I always find it ironic that these are regarded as heritage boots while they appear closer to the modern trend of sticking a trainer EVA sole on all other footwear types.

I can't find a pair with out defects , 1907 boot poor finishing on the out sole , sanding stitching , my issue with one or both MOC TOE being crooked pointing to the right or left , not concentric to the boot . the year made 2022 & 2023 , i have sent 2 pair back to RW , they have a great return policy , poor quality control .

9.5 D Brannock maybe slightly larger. 9D Rangers. The right boot is still a little snug.
